blink-182 Neighborhoods3.0
Comeback albums often feel like a half assed attempt at recreating a bands glory days. Too often bands reunite only to produce watered down albums packed with filler as a last ditch attempt to remain relevant and put some money in their wallets. Blink-182, however, who have basically been a model of consistency throughout their career, have once again put out an album that even the pickiest of their fans can enjoy. With Neighborhoods, blink avoids the easy way out of just attempting to replicate the sound that made them famous and instead, they pick up right where they left off on their self titled record and continue to push their music forward into new territories. While songs like "MH 4.18.2011" and "Natives" have that familiar/vintage blink feel, songs like "Ghost on the Dancefloor" and "Snake Charmer" expand on the darker sound blink brought forward on their self titled. Neighborhoods not only exceeds expectations, it actually holds it's own against blinks past work, which is no small feat for an album that comes 8 years after it's predecessor.

It seems like the Arctic Monkeys have finally found a sound to move forward with. When the Monkeys released "Whatever People Say I Am..." about five years back, legions of fans instantly fell in love with the fast, in your face, catchy tunes that it seemed like the band could churn out effortlessly. Moving forward though, it seemed like the band had nowhere to go from there. Sure, "Favorite Worst Nightmare" relived some of the moments of brilliance that were so prevalent on "Whatver..", and "Humbug" had some moments of Homme-influenced stoner brilliance, but neither albums felt complete. So what did the Monkeys do next? They created a dreamy-pop album full of 60's inspired pop rock and some of the best lyrics Turner has ever written. If this is the path the Monkeys continue to follow, I think it's safe to say there is reason again to be very excited about their future.
