FUN. AS. SHIT. not as good as Feed The Animals or Night Ripper, but stuff like Soulja Boy vs Aphex Twin and ODB vs Radiohead and Portishead vs Big Boi proves that Greg Gillis has still got it, and right when i was starting to lose faith in the mashup.

the album that taught me that hip-hop wasn't all about bitches and bling bling. these songs are real, dark, personal, and tear-jerking. must-have for the nonbelievers. and i don't think i'd be exaggerating when i say Slug is the best white rapper making albums post-Eminem Show.

The Smiths Meat Is Murder2.5
despite it's standout tracks [How Soon Is Now, the Headmaster Ritual, Nowhere Fast], Meat is Murder is otherwise kind of bland from both a musical standpoint and a songwriting standpoint. some tracks are really unmemorable, but this is nevertheless a fun album and works good as background music.

Violent Femmes Violent Femmes4.5
Dirty Projectors New Attitude2.5
Dirty Projectors Rise Above4.0
an incredibly awkward, out-of-left-field cover album that manages to still work out greatly in the end. This album isn't for the hardcore Black Flag fans out there; it's for the Dirty Projectors fans who, like myself and Dave Longstreth, haven't listened to Damaged in a long-ass time.
Wavves King of the Beach2.5
a catchy summer album that doesn't really do much but be a catchy summer album. it does have some mixtape-worthy songs, but the filler tracks [and there are many of them] drag the album as a whole down.
Funkadelic Maggot Brain5.0
M.I.A. Maya1.5
Everything that Major Lazer and M.I.A's previous works got right with their whole pop/hip-
hop infused dancehall/club/electrowhatever, M.I.A. got wrong with MAYA. The beats are
annoying, and M.I.A's once authentic and distinguishable rap has been reduced to a flowless
annunciated talk, droning on about lyrics that are complete rubbish. This is not the girl we
know and love from Arular.

Bomb the Music Industry! Scrambles4.0
Neutral Milk Hotel On Avery Island3.5
Shockingly underrated. Despite being completely overshadowed by Aeroplane, this album is a solid debut, and worth a good listen. Sure, the tracks are a bit of a rollercoaster, from the catchy Song Against Sex to the avant-garde bore Pree Sisters Swallow A Glass Eye, but some songs [such as Three Peaches and April 8th] stick in your head and rank just as high as songs like Oh Comely and Ghost in my mind.

Kanye West 808s and Heartbreak4.5
no, really? why DO i like this album so much? usually i cringe at the thought of ego-obsessed rappers whining about using music to solve all their emotional problems, and auto-tune to solve their vocal problems, but for some reason, this album just works for me. my favorite mainstream pop album of the decade.

haunting, heartwrenching and beautiful. a perfect score for one of my favorite movies of all time. they fit perfectly like a glove.

MGMT Congratulations2.5
MGMT have pretty much become a new band with this one. Too bad it's nothing we can't get out of a Flaming Lips or Dan Deacon record. no real standout tracks, but props to the Eno recognition. WHO WOULD'VE EVER GUESSED MGMT LIKES BRIAN ENO?!?
Dirty Projectors Bitte Orca5.0
a wonderful album that's melodic and poppy, but at the same time is something totally different. from the three part harmonies, to the classical guitar licks, to thte power pipes from all four singers, to the unorthodoxly catchy and memorable songs, Bitte Orca stands as my absolute favorite record of 2009.

Joy Division Unknown Pleasures5.0
Godspeed You! Black Emperor F♯ A♯ ∞4.0
Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven4.5
Fang Island Fang Island4.0
This album mixes the harmonies and brightness of Animal Collective, the instrumentation of Battles and the energy and free spirit of Dan Deacon to make the feel-good album of the year. definitely somewhere in my top 5 so far.
LCD Soundsystem This Is Happening4.0
Fantomas Suspended Animation3.5
Certianly not a horrible album, and probably the best this avant-garde supergroup has to offer. Mike Patton and co. have made an album that is the audio equivalent of that fucking tunnel from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and i loved every second of it, even if it did start to start to sound like the same song over and over again after the 15 minute mark.
The Blood Brothers Young Machetes2.0
The Blood Brothers Crimes4.5
in a world where pretty much every screamo band is a ripoff of a ripoff of a ripoff, The Blood Brothers have always stand out in a steaming shitheap of a scene. [i don't like screamo.] This album combines the screeching intensity of their previous works with a new approach that brings both originality and amazingness to the table. from the insanity of Trash Flavored Trash and Beautiful Horses that BB were best known for on earlier albums, to the mellow swooning melodies of Live At The Apocalypse Cabaret and the title track itself, Crimes cements its place in my head as the best hardcore album i've ever heard. the only thing that kills it is the barely-memorable Teen Heat, and the album closer Celebrator, where Johnny Whiney finally overdoes it. An otherwise perfect record. Highly recommended for that kid on your bus who thinks A Skylit Drive and Bring Me The Horizon are thee best bands on earth
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds Murder Ballads4.0
Sleigh Bells Treats2.5
believe me, it doesn't take much for these Treats to get stale.
The Velvet Underground White Light/White Heat5.0
The Dillinger Escape Plan Irony Is a Dead Scene4.5
a perfect showing of Mike Patton's vocal abilities. from the hard, slightly Fantomas-ey yelling Hollywood Squares, to the brilliant California-esque singing in When Good Dogs Go Bad, the EP encompasses all that makes Mike Patton a god amongst frontmen. Paired with the technical brutality of DEP, this EP is probably the best record in all of the mathcore genre.
