What's the point? Money, dosh, moolah, dinero. That's the point. SOFAD is one of the Mode's best albums to date, but capturing it from various live performances and slapping it on a CD is nothing but a lesson in corporate aggrandisement. After all, the Devotional tour that this is from used only a minimum of live instruments - the guitar and occasional drums are eclipsed by the backing tapes. DM were still primarily Mooging away at this time. '101' is a different story, because it was the zenith of their stadium career. 'Songs Of Faith And Devotion Live' is a harmless-yet-bland cash-in, and nothing more. |

The Beautiful South Quench | 3.0 |
Their last good album, Quench is still a bit hit and miss. 'Losing Things' is superbly jazzy, 'The Table' is trademark catchy Beautiful South, and 'Perfect 10' is brilliant, but some tracks are just so bland ('Big Coin', 'Window Shopping For Blinds', 'I May Be Ugly') that it pales in comparison to Blue Is The Colour or their first album. Still worth a listen though |

This is a raw, unfocused, and incredibly creative album. It was obvious that VU and Warhol were two separate camps (Nico part of the latter) but none of their succeeding albums sounds quite as dynamic and original as this. Some songs, like 'Venus In Furs', just have a certain 'feel' to them, and while later albums offered that creativity on a polished plate, none could match the stark rawness of this debut. |

These guys started out this band as a joke, and it shows. There's nothing bad here, but then there's nothing new or exciting either. 'I Want You So Hard' was a catchy-enough number, and some songs offer promise in title if nothing else. Ultimately, it's an incredibly average record full of rock music that goes nowhere. Stick it on in the background, but don't pay it too much attention. And don't even try to listen to the lyrics. |
