Putting their experimental folk craziness behind them Animal Collective get alot catchier with their 2005 release. The first half consists of upbeat indie songs while the second is full of golden ballad time beauty. Banshee Beat shows why Feels could be the band's best work.

Kiss Kiss's debut EP is created by a medley of genres, blended together to create a smoothie of sonic perfection. Channeling label mates Murder By Death, Kiss Kiss's punkish sound is heavily aided by keyboards and violins. Says My Doctor, the first song, is just about as good as it gets and the quality of the EP barely wanes in the next four tracks. A great album for fans of Indie, Punk and Experimental alike.

Panda Bear Person Pitch4.5
Person Pitch is a very Brian Wilson/Beach Boys influenced outing for the famed Panda Bear (Noah Lennox). Fans of Bear's other group Animal Collective (especially Feels) should be right at home with this disc, as all 7 tracks features the lush production and trippy effects that are so prominent in much of the Collective's work. One word to describe the sound of Person Pitch? Perhaps watery, but maybe tribal, or even poppy, because, at bare bones Person Pitch is just a collection of well written pop songs. From the jarring jungle beats of Good Girl/Carrots to the choruses of Bro's (as sweeping as they are sad) to the reflective album closer Ponytail, every thing about Person Pitch just works.

The Dead Texan The Dead Texan3.5
A thought provoking effort from a 2004 ambient duo, The Dead Texan soars high with epic, all most post-rock melodies and calming synthesizers, but falters slightly with an overlong tune towards the end and a decidedly low replay value. Sparse vocals make for an interesting listen, but instrumental A Chronicle of Early Failures Part 2 speaks louder than most songs ever could, without a single word. An excellent excellent CD for fans of Brian Eno, Sigur Ros and others along that line.

In a world where Weezer are past their prime Wheatus are a breath of fresh air for nerd rock. They have one of the most Oh-that-song-sounds-so-familiart-but-who-the-hell-did-it one hit wonders of all time in Teenage Dirtbag, a pop-punk ditty that can hang with the catchiest of them all. The guitars on this record have some of the best tone of any mainstream rock record I've ever heard, not too much treble, with a very sustained fuzz. Album closer Wanna Be Gangster is an instant classic.

An album like nothing I had ever heard before listening, AGDCFF combines great production with Mike Skinner's legendary real life songwriting. A concept album that is as much a storybook set to music that it is one of the most hyped modern Hip-Hop albums. The only flaw is that Skinner voice gets slightly annoying on some tracks. But seriously who else do you know who can write an entire song about going to return a DVD?

Mellow Gold is Beck's debut album, a masterpiece in it's own right. The album blends lo-fi with heavy electronica and hip-hop. Fans of Sea Change and Odelay! may be turned off at first, but beneath layers of strange fuzz and screams there is a creative and brooding songsmith. Though he does not expose himself totally many songs (including hit single "Loser") are seen by many as some of Beck's best work.

With Idiot Green Day manage to pull three things, they alienate old fans, gain thousands of new ones and make some of the most radio ready pop punk tunes ever. Tracks like Homecoming and Give me Novacaine make up for some of the garbage on the record, but can not salvage the fact that it has one of the lowest replay values of any album. The singles, peppered through out the album recieved so much play that it is now almost impossible for me to listen to it in whole. Plus some songs just suck.

Nightmare Of You Nightmare Of You2.5
Nightmare of You, like most new bands these days take heavy influences from the 80’s. But instead of using synths like The Bravery or The Killers, Nightmare of You take their dark pop sound from the bands like The Smiths and The Cure and add in elements of modern Pop-Punk like Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco. Chorus tinged guitars, the occasional keyboard line and mellower drums and bass make up the majority of Nightmare of You’s sound. NOY themselves have a great songwriting talent, which unfortunately only comes into play 4 or 5 times on the album. This leads me to the biggest problem with Nightmare’s debut. Nearly every song sounds the same, a few tunes break the mold but most are just the same thing, dark love songs, which makes for a dull 11 tracks.

Sonic Youth are one the oldest bands today that still make important music. Unfortunetly with the release of Rather Ripped they trip up. The music iis as standard as SY get and can be pretty boring. The ideas are good, but many songs are under written. If Sister and DDN are rainforests of sound and creativity it would seem RR is nothing more than a prarie.

Real Boy is the epitome of pop punk songwriting. More of a musical than a concept album, It blends Descendents esque down on myself punk with delicious indie rock elements. Max Bemis is one of the most enjoyable whiners I have ever heard in my life, his voice is perfect (for what it is) and his lyrics are delectable. This is a masterpiece, nuff said.

Panic! at the Disco A Fever You Can't Sweat Out3.5
Panic! at the Disco's debut album is hard for me to rate. The music is much more creative than any other band playing the new style of Pop-Punk but the vocals are so annoying they are almost intolerable. Certain songs (including a three song streach at the end) are awesome and fun but others are just stupid. Fun to dance to though.

Antony's voice is amazing in every sense of the word. It is full, deep, and extremley moving. Though I question his lyrics, this is the perfect chill-out blend of indie, blues and soul. The guest stars keep things intresting through this wave of beauty and intrigue. The first and final tracks are major standouts, the former being one of my picks for best single of 05.

Neutral Milk Hotel Everything Is2.0
Everything Is is probably the single hardest to rate piece of music I have ever heard. Its emotionless, dry, hard to listen to and extremley underproduced, and on the other hand its heart-breaking, strange and fun. The album is full of crazy samples and crunchy guitar, with Mangum just wailing along in the background, Everything Is just takes the problems (if every so small) with Aeroplane and magnifys them, as if a joke or something. The last 2 tracks are pretty cool, but the first are almost unlistenable.

Quasimoto The Further Adventures of Lord Quas4.5
With The Further Adventures of Lord Quas, Quasimoto (an alter ego of Undie Rap Chameleon Madlib) reinvents his sound with sampledelic beats that put shame to the naked snares of his previous effort the Unseen. Like the Unseen Quas brings hilarious rhymes, as well as dark commentaries on the urban life, all through a voice altering device that makes him sound more Bo Bo than Nas. The CD really picks up after a guest appearance from MF DOOM shakes things up on insta-classic Closer. The last half is all gold.
