the strong tracks are incredibly well written singles and should boost the band's overall exposure because they have the big 'hype' vibe to them. can we also appreciate the pantera influence showing stronger than ever on this record? we need more hardcore acts to start flavoring their style with groove metal. this album has some hit or miss moments, but if they keep up the formula im sure itll only get better. |

their best mix of metalcore and r&b to date. i always knew they'd be able to make up for the loss of harsh vocals with tyler's voice. he doesn't overcompensate with his vocal composition like slaves, it's well balanced and feels like a metalcore-styled bruno mars act more than a metalcore band with some flashy singing. very well done and i love how this band has come back after a disappointing sophomore album. |

usually not crazy about metalcore and this singer steps on the line of annoying with his bravado BUT him and the whole group are exceptional songwriters and this is a very refined sound imo. as far as the genre goes this feels like a band in the upper echelon. |

Very pleasantly surprised. While Node and Mesmer were good albums, they needed something to serve Marcus Bridge's talents much more directly. Alien is focused on song structuring and effective hooking with each song. Lots of memorable moments to make up for the occasionally average section or song and a more ambitious industrial injection into the still very prominent prog/metalcore style that got them where they are today. With such a great new formula, this feels like it is only the beginning for the brand new Northlane. |

This is like Architects minus the screamed sections & the instrumental parts to compliment said screamed sections. Therefore, it lacks in dynamic more often than not. It's not totally uninteresting though, and I feel like as these guys get better as song writers (and get a better mixing engineer for fuck sake) they'll step up. Slightly above average until further notice. |

Hail the Sun Mental Knife | 4.5 |
This album is the shit. Takes notions from Wake and Culture Scars and makes the best out of them. A bit more unkempt than Culture Scars, yet more refined and reserved than Wake. Donovan has progressed as a singer immensely and Shane Gann has progressed LEAGUES in the way of songwriting. The sonic structures of these songs are impeccable and each transition is masterfully done. The most noticeable difference between this release and each previous is the moods in each song. Wake didn't try to give any mood other than 100% intensity (sans 'Relax / Divide'), and Culture Scars tried and to manufacture emotion. Mental Knife doesn't need the manufacturing, as it naturally lets emotions flow all while bridging the gaps between previous releases. I'm utterly in love with this release and so excited to see Hail the Sun take their careers to a new level. |

Bumped my 2.5 to a 3. There are some redeeming qualities in the song structuring choices and memorable melodies. Palms still lacks the same memorability they accomplished on TBEITBN, but it remains a fun listen. The closer is one of their best tracks in recent memory. |

These guys are in my local scene and have made a name for themselves very quickly. I know so many people who have been opened up to the world of shoegaze, post rock, and post metal through this album. What a release, what a band. I'm pulling for them to hop on Deathwish Inc. and start conquering the world. Listen to this fucking album. |

An intoxicating blend of classic post hardcore and blackgaze. Unlike some bands who enjoy incorporating complex and dark transitions and extended passages to give the songs a drawn out, epic feeling, YK sticks to a rather punk-influenced charm by turning the tune so quickly on you that you need to run it back to really catch all of the nuances in each track. The vocal style screams old school emo while the noisy, erratic tones hearken to their blackened punk predecessors. This is a stalwart release by the budding young Ukrainian five-piece, and you best believe I am ordering a tee to rep in my town. These guys need to be heard. |

I'm vibing. It seems to keep the unmistakable Underoath vibe. While the formula has changed, the dynamic remains the same. It's ferocious in a different way, but still hits hard. Lots of bands seem to fail in transition to a more accessible sound, but in my opinion Underoath has succeeded. Color me impressed. |

Bourget's voice is astonishing as I had expected, and every time I hear it I still am amazed at how cool it is. I had no clue what to expect as far as the music goes when I learned that he started this band, but it's actually pretty cool and suitable for his voice. This band is an instant Shayley & friends group (obviously via the name of the band itself) so unless he sings and writes all the music, the other members won't get nearly enough credit. Awesome debut though. High replay value. |

Matured as musicians definitely, and Telle's clean vocals show much improvement and actually sound like they belong in the music unlike the debut album.
