Insomnium Across the Dark3.5
I've only heard two Insomnium albums, and I think this might be my favourite. Opposed to Above The Weeping World, where each track sort of blended into each other with the end result being unmemorable (for me at least), Across The Dark has a more varied and progressive feel throughout. One of the main talking points will be the clean vocals, which play their part in several songs, and while they fit really well on 'Where The Last Wave Broke' they only hinder songs like 'The Harrowing Years' and don't always work as well as they might. It's a hit-and-miss outcome to a new aspect of Insomnium's sound, and a chance that they might have needed to take.

Alongside this though is Insomnium at their typical solid best. Bellowing forward some of the most occasionally inspiring and consistently powerful melodic death metal you're likely to hear. 'Against The Stream' has some of the best riffs I've heard in the genre for a while, and the epic second half of 'The Lay Of Autumn' contrasts well with the cleanly sung passage in the first. While I still don't see Insomnium as the best band in the genre as many proclaim them to be, Across The Dark is a brilliant example of why it's so popular, and how to do it well. Awesome production, typical atmosphere, powerful and epic, and just some downright fantastic riff work throughout. Fans of the band will eat this up.

p.s - the acoustic interlude in 'Weighted Down With Sorrow' is pure magic, I pretty much creamed myself at that point.

What makes this album so much better than most released this year, is the ambition of the band. They have quite clearly played their hearts out on this album, the songs are beautifully written and played perfectly, there are too many stand out moments in both songs to mention and after listening you end up feeling like you've just read a great novel. What really actually astounds me about the writing on this disc is the feeling of continuity and various thematic elements that ring true in several parts of one song, and then the other. Not to say that the songs sound exactly the same, but there?s a tinge of meaning and connection between the songs that make sense and are able to relate to one another. Trying to explain why this album is such a majestic triumph is like trying to explain why getting to the top of everest is such an overwhelming feeling, eventually, all you can say is you; have to experience it for yourself.

This album is hard to explain, it sits somewhere between prog metal, death metal, and melodic metal without ever being squashed into one genre, they bring some heavy crushing songs that could scare most other brutal bands in their nightmares but then they come up with some of the most beautiful, enchanting songs in music. The vocals are a definite high point, they go everywhere and beyond, death growl, black shriek, grunt, clean, shout, you get the idea, the vocalist is seriously talented. This album is worth a listen just to hear how weird it is, you won't find many albums that sound like this.

The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own? This inveterate sense of constraint is a great blow to the veracity of mankind’s abilities. It restrains us and holds our minds to the ground below, averting any possibility of rising above ourselves to something greater; something not fathomed by the conventional mind. This concept of seeking to go beyond one’s self, known as “transcendence”, is essentially a gateway to unlocking pieces of ourselves that can lead to some of the most elaborate and significant creations of our world. For many, this quest to transcend and form creations that were once considered unthinkable and overwhelming consumes life. Certainly it is rare to find such people, but when they are found, creative barriers are destroyed.

One of the best prog/death metal albums made. This band is often compared to Opeth but I don't see it, sure they both have long songs and mix melody with brutality, but Disillusion are a lot more compact and their songwriting just creatively flows without being random and split up, the vocals are perfect for the sound, the death metal grunt is often used but it's the clean singing that gives this album such an immense quality, the songwriting is great, from start to finish, with some of the catchiest parts of the songs not leaving your head for months. A must buy for any metal fan.

What an album, take away a lot of the needless doodling around and unnecessary spoken word parts out of the middle and this could have been a classic, folky-black metal at this length might make you think of Moonsorrow, but this album is a different beast altogether. Harsh black metal screams contrast with what would best be described as a decent 'epic' clean vocal style, which would improve and become more natural on later albums, the cold sounding riffs lead the way most of the time, along with luscious keyboard/synth work, the climax is stunning, the first fifteen minutes is godly, but the man tries way too much in the middle, still though, it's a fantastic experience. Sure, the production might put some people off, not to mention the beastly length, but for a debut album, you don't get much more impressive or daring than this. Recommended.

For those of you who don't know (shame on you), Crimson is a 40 minute song with a bucket load of progressive death metal riffs, many of them which are memorable and stick in your head after the song/album has played through. I bought this album after Purgatory Afterglow and I wasn't sure if this could top that. I loved PG but this... This blows it off the planet. This is when Dan Swan?s at his creative best (in my opinion), his vocals here are also the best he has ever done. This is one of the very very few vocalists that you can actually understand the growling vocals without the booklet, I kid you not! The guitarists all shine on the album, they all sound crisp and powerful and the music has a slightly fuzzy feel from the production which really fits the atmosphere. Epic, creative, unique and damn right powerful. There's a winning combination if ever I saw one.

Edge of Sanity at their most aggressive, old-school death metal meets the progressive nature of Dan Swano in an interesting, but flawed combination. There are some amazing songs, like Enigma and the odd but interesting When All Is Said, yet some amount of filler creeps on, reducing the final score of this.
Dan's vocals are exemplary, from the rare appearance of his cleans to his varied growls and shouts, and the guitars roll out one memorable riff after another, only a few traces of later Edge of Sanity can be found here, with the occasional melodic lead popping up or the slow-downs, but apart from that, this is their most brutal and aggressive album, recommended to any Edge of Sanity fan or just Death Metal fans in particular, there's plenty to enjoy here.
