This is simply amazing. Usually post rock/post metal can get pretty boring with too many bands within said genres who do nothing to differentiate themselves from one another. However, this album stands out. Soaring, epic, crushing, and emotional are just some of the words to best describe what you feel when you listen to this. By the time the album closes, you will really feel like you traveled to the plains of the purple buffaloes, witnessed it in all it's glory, and then returned. |

A Storm Of Light Nations to Flames | 3.5 |
A lot better than I expected. This still sounds like a Neurosis record but a lot of the post-metal wankery/build up is cut out for a more chaotic sound. Those disappointed by Honor in Decay should check this out. |
A Storm Of Light As The Valley Of Death Becomes Us... | 4.0 |
Very good post-metal album. Yes this sounds like a Neurosis album but where Neurosis has lost a lot of their bludgeoning heaviness A Storm of Light has picked it up |

Abraham The Serpent, the Prophet and the Whore | 4.5 |
If your into ISIS, Neurosis, The Ocean and Cult Of Luna then get ready to add Abraham to your must have Sludge/Post-Metal bands. The guys have really excelled themselves here. They have written a blistering album that should set them amongst the leaders of the new breed of Sludge/Post-Metal artists. This record is not an easy listen by any means but for those who choose to give this record a try, they will surely be rewarded. |

Amenra Mass I: Prayer I - VI | 2.5 |
Amenra Mass II: Sermons | 3.0 |
Amenra Alive | 4.0 |
Amenra Mass VI | 4.0 |
The clean vocals and the short length of the album might disappoint some, but if you've been keeping up with Amenra since after Mass V, this album should be no surprise. Instead of sticking with their usual balls out sludginess, Amenra deliver a less direct post-metal blow to the head with this one. This sound doesn't always work, but when it does it sounds like a soundscape for the apocalypse. Mass VI is definitely different from previous Amenra albums, but this time different is good. |
Amenra Mass IIII | 4.5 |
Amenra Mass III | 4.5 |
I've slept on these guys far too long. This album is everything a Neurosis album should sound like post Silver in Blood. |
Amenra Mass V | 4.5 |
Best post-metal album released this year and a contender for album of the year IMO. As epic as this record is, I can't help but feel disappointment considering that Amenra is on Neurot records and this album is WAY BETTER than Honor Found in Decay. |
Amia Venera Landscape Amia Venera Landscape | 3.0 |
Amia Venera Landscape The Long Procession | 4.5 |
One of the most brutal, heaviest metal albums I have ever heard. Marasm is a beast of a track and a great instrumental. This album would be a five it wasn't for Ascending and Glances Part I. However, those misses don't really do too much to take away from this incredible album. Can't wait to hear more music from them in the future. |
Amy Winehouse Back to Black | 4.0 |
An Autumn For Crippled Children portugal EP | 2.0 |
I usually like post/blackgaze metal but there is nothing metal about this. This sounds like The Cure or MBV with black metal vocals thrown in for kicks. I would never consider myself a black metal elitist but this EP makes me understand why elitists hate this type of black metal. Black Monolith I can stand; Deafheaven I can understand, AAFCC, no longer listenable. |

Band definitely has talent but doesn't bring anything new to post metal. What can be heard here can definitely be heard better done by a lot of post metal bands. However, despite the criticism, this is still a pretty good record. Hopefully on the next album this band's sound will evolve to something more original. |

This album makes it hard as an A7X fan to defend. Second half of this album saves this from being a complete disaster but this is still probably their worst album. |
Avenged Sevenfold Sounding the Seventh Trumpet | 2.5 |
Avenged Sevenfold Welcome to the Family | 2.5 |
Avenged Sevenfold Avenged Sevenfold | 3.0 |
Very different from their previous albums but definitely not as bad as everyone says it is. Would have rated it a 3.5 if not for Dear God. |
Avenged Sevenfold Nightmare | 3.5 |
At first I was disappointed that this album was not a return to their roots. I thought this was going to be an all metal album. However, I'm happy that it is not. This is an album where you can tell that the band is grieving The Rev. Some of the songs are so emotional they almost brings tears to your eyes. It took me a couple of listens to really get into this album but it is really good. Recs include: Victim, Save Me, Fictions, Tonight the World Dies. |
Avenged Sevenfold Waking the Fallen | 4.0 |

Experimentation is usually good but it seems like BtBaM over did it on this one. None of their raw intensity or brutality is portrayed here. This just seems like an extremely watered down version of Colors or Alaska. |

Between the Buried and Me Automata I | 3.5 |
Between the Buried and Me Between the Buried and Me | 4.0 |

Between the Buried and Me Future Sequence: Live at the Fidelitorium | 4.0 |
Between the Buried and Me Alaska | 4.5 |
Between the Buried and Me Colors | 4.5 |
It's almost comical how much I used to despise this band. After giving Colors a real good listen I still feel that they are pretentious, have too much wankery going on in this album, and the vocals lack emotion. Despite that BTBAM still seem to make everything work to make truly great album. |
Between the Buried and Me Colors_Live | 4.5 |
Between the Buried and Me Coma Ecliptic | 5.0 |
If anyone would have told me that BTBAM would create an album more progressive than metal and I would like it I would have told them no way would it be listenable. A lot of people will hate this album and say it is unlistenable. Here we are though and that is what they have done and it is a masterpiece. This album is so fleshed out with influences it's hard to comprehend how it all works but it does. From Pink Floyd, to Cynic, and even Tool you can hear all of it in this album but it still sounds original. Shame a lot of people are going to hate this album and miss out on a great album because this is extremely different from their previous work. Damn, if you like prog metal this will knock your socks off. |

Wow.... Can't believe how awesome this album is!! I happened to read about them and decided to download the album for the heck of it and boy was I blown away! Was a little unnerved by the fact that the name is a blatant ripoff of Mastodon but decided to listen anyway. Yes, this band is the bastard child of a Mastodon, Baroness, High on Fire orgy, but they take all the best elements from those bands to make excellent Metal. There isn't anything original here but they happen to do sludge/stoner metal better than most (Black Tusk, Howl). Stressed Elephant, Melody, This is for You, and Two-Day Booze are the standout tracks. If you like the bands that influenced Bison B.C., you'll love this. |

On paper black post metal does not sound like it would sound good together with punk but somehow Black Monolith gets it to work. Yes this sounds almost exactly like Deafheaven but this is still a good record. If anyone wanted to find out what Deafheaven would sound like with black metal and punk elements added, this is the record for you. |
Black Sheep Wall No Matter Where It Ends | 2.0 |
Can't believe that this is as bad as it is. Every song sounds exactly the same. Seems like they exhausted all of their creative efforts on I Am God Songs. Oh well, maybe their next album will be better. |

This is not as good as Affliction but it's still a damn good album nonetheless. The first half of the album is excellent but the last three songs bring down the consistency of the album. Wish this had some of the aggressiveness that made Affliction great. |
Blindead Affliction XXIX II MCMXCVI | 4.5 |
This would be a five if the music wasn't so damn creepy! Album is good and all but this is not something you would want to listen to alone in the dark... That being said, the music is very atmospheric and heavy with both parts being balanced out nicely. |

Yes their is pretty much no musical progression from their last album, or any of their albums for that matter but damn if they aren't good at what they do. Their are some incredible songs on here and some boring ones but the good drastically outweighs the bad. If you like BB then you'll like this album. Wish I could rate this a 3.8. |

All I can say is wow! This is so earth-shattering heavy it's almost hard to believe. While most consider Chronoclast to be BI's magnum opus, I would argue this is far better. While Chronoclast is pretty much straight forward and in your face, this album moves and churns as if through a river of sludge. The only albums I can truly compare this to are the early albums from Cult of Luna, The Ocean, and maybe Admiral Angry/Black Sheep Wall but even saying that doesn't give this album justice. The only negative here is the album length. Almost an hour of being screamed at and being pummeled into oblivion is almost too much for most people, even hardened metal fans. Even worse, sometimes the album can feel longer than that due to the slow sludginess of this music. However, if you can listen to this in pieces and can stand the heaviness, this is definitely a sludge masterpiece. |

Just listened to this full album today and all I can say is Fucking Amazing. For only having three tracks I was blown away. You would never guess that only one person is making all this noise. Not saying it is a bad thing, its the opposite. All of the instruments are woven together perfectly. I can't think of anyone to compare this too because its so original. Fans of Pelican and Explosions in the Sky will probably like this. |

I really didn't want to rate this album so low but it's just plain boring. I though BigHans was being a douche when he rated the album low and I listened to this after I read his review just to prove him wrong. I just knew that there was no way that the band I loved in High school could make an average album, but they did. Almost every son on here is BORING. Wicked World starts the album off on a good note but no other song has any of the emotion that Wicked World has. I was hoping this album would have the same energy and emotion that A Different Kind of Pain had but this is such a disappointment. I still love Cold and I will listen to this album more to see if it grows on me but as of right now I don't see that album. Hopefully Cold can survive this album and make a much better album in the future. |
Cold A Different Kind of Pain | 3.5 |
Not to many people feel this record but this is a very emotional album. One of the most underrated albums to ever come out during the Nu-Metal days. |

Was really expecting a lot from this album considering all the hype this band gets. Boy was I disappointed. I guess the only way to really enjoy Colour Haze music is with the added help of a certain substance. Without it, this album is just too boring. |
Conan Blood Eagle | 2.5 |
I was expecting so much more from the self proclaimed "heaviest band on the planet". After listening to Blood Eagle I think Conan must have heavy confused with sleep inducing. |
Converge Axe to Fall | 1.0 |
Just horrible. Don't understand why most of the sputnik community is all over this band's collective dicks. The vocals are an abomination to all singers who have ever song. This is earrape at its best. |

I have tried over and over to listen to this album but I cannot get over the horrible vocals of Jacob Bannon. It just brings down the quality of the music way too much IMO. Maybe this album will grow on me in the future, but until then, I don't think its a good album and don't understand why so many sputnik users like this garbage. |

Cult Leader Lightless Walk | 2.5 |
Cult of Luna Eternal Kingdom | 2.5 |
Hate to give this album such a low rating but this is a disappointment in comparison to their last three albums. Most of the heaviness from their last albums is gone and replaced by interlude after boring interlude. There are some excellent songs on here, Owlwood, Ghostrail, and Mire Deep but this is not up to par with what they are capable of doing. |
Cult of Luna Vertikal | 4.0 |
While not as good as Salvation or SATH or even on the same level as Amenra's Mass V, it's still a damn good post-metal album and a lot better than Honor Found in Decay. |
Cult of Luna The Beyond | 4.5 |
Wow! Talk about being pummeled into submission! This is one of the heaviest post-metal albums I have ever heard. The album is so heavy that you kind of have to mentally prepare yourself before you listen to it. And you can't listen to it on everyday because of how dark the lyrics are. Standouts include Receiver, Genesis, & Leash. The only thing that keeps this album from being a 5 are the vocals which sound like are sometimes drowned out by the instruments and the album being so long. However, if you can get past the vocals being unaduible at times and the music being unrelentingly heavy, this is post-metal at its best. Not for the weak at heart, this is a metal man's album. |
Cult of Luna Salvation | 4.5 |
Didn't really expect this album to be as good as it is. Heavier than Isis but not as experimental as Neurosis. Would be the perfect Metal album if it wasn't for Crossing Over. |
Cult of Luna Somewhere Along the Highway | 4.5 |
This album is still growing on me. While I have been listening to this album for a few months now I still feel like their is still more to this album I am missing. Right now I think it is a 4.2 but I see that changing to a 4.5 as I continue to listen to it. While I don't think this album is better than Salvation due to "Thirtyfour" and "Dim" lacking enough vocals, "And With Her Came The Birds" more than makes up for those two tracks by being one of the creepiest and haunting songs I have ever heard. Overall a great listen that you won't get tired of listening to. |

Dead To A Dying World Elegy | 2.5 |
Was really expecting more from this album considering the hype. Was hoping this would be a little heavy but sleep inducing doom/post metal is what i actually got. Not impressed. |
Deadwood Picturing a Sense of Loss | 2.5 |
I know that a lot of albums within the post black metal genre have songs that sound similar but this is just ridiculous. You could listen to this whole album and never know the song ever changed because that's how much each songs the same. Deadwood have a good sound but next time they make an album they need to add more variety. |

Deftones Diamond Eyes | 3.0 |
Meh. The album is good at best. Has some great songs on here like Beauty School but some of the riffs are too repetitive and some of the songs sound like old Deftones songs (Risk sounds like a Passenger clone). All in all a good Deftones album but definitely not worth the praise it has been receiving. |
Deftones Saturday Night Wrist | 4.0 |
Deftones Gore | 4.0 |
Deftones Koi No Yokan | 4.5 |
I used to love the Deftones but thanks to the user's and staff's excessive dick sucking of the Deftones, I really started to hate this band. Because of that I almost missed out on one of the best albums of 2012. While I don't salivate over this album like most sputnikers, I now understand why they do. |
Deftones White Pony | 5.0 |
Demon Hunter True Defiance | 3.5 |
Der Weg Einer Freiheit Finisterre | 4.0 |
Design the Skyline Nevaeh | 1.5 |
Destrage Are You Kidding Me? No. | 2.5 |
These guys definitely have potential. While some of the songs are highly enjoyable the album feels as if you've heard it a dozen times before. It almost sounds as if this is supposed to be a tribute album to Protest the Hero, Between the Buried and Me, and others. If these guys can come up with a style more their own with less atrocious vocals they could be a good band. |
Devil Sold His Soul Empire of Light | 2.0 |
The vocals, especially the cleans, have always been hard to listen to but at least they were mixed in with superb musicianship which made them at least bearable. Why they decided to do a whole album with the cleans being the focal point is beyond me. This is horrible from a band capable of so much more. |
Devil Sold His Soul Blessed & Cursed | 2.5 |
Maybe I'm used to listening to heavier metal, I don't know but I didn't think there was anything special about this album. Vocals are unimpressive and the clean singer comes off as sounding a little too whiney and emo for music that is supposed to be metal. I mean, seriously, where is the balls! Most of the songs on this album sound the same and follow the same song structure. Some songs are too long which doesn't help when you are bored after the first two minutes. If you want to listen to a new, good prog band, listen to Trenches who have a post-rock/metal vibe thing going on but sound SOOO much better. This album is not really that bad nothing about it really stands out. Don't listen to this, listen to Trenches instead. |

E.I.S.M has the same vocalist as Hands and sounds exactly like Hands given that the songs are very atmospheric, prod along, and then become extremely heavy. Lyrics deal with faith and Christianity so if that's not your thing stay far away. Damn good EP for only two songs. |
Everything in Slow Motion Phoenix | 4.5 |
Great debut album from this Christian metal/hardcore band. The lyrics are phenomenal in portraying dealing with life's troubles. Glad the lead singer from Hands decided to continue his vision of music after Hands disbanded. |

Fallujah The Flesh Prevails | 3.5 |
As much as I want to rate this higher I cannot. While some of the songs on here are absolute masterpieces there are too many moments that are just plain boring. This album minus the boring parts would easily make this album a 5 but the boring parts just bring the album down too much. |

One by One, and In Your Honor had there moments but were extremely boring and bland at other parts. Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace was a step in the right direction. This is the album most Foo Fighter fans knew they were capable of producing and had been longing for this for years. I have listened to all of the album and I can say this is the only Foo Fighters album I can listen to from start to finish without skipping a track. All I can really say is this a real good listen. There are some bad parts but so little that it doesn't take away from the good. Hopefully, they continue to make music this good in the future. |

Giant Squid Metridium Fields | 3.5 |
Giant Squid Cenotes | 4.5 |
Great EP. Glad Giant Squid decided to make this record heavy. Hopefully they can continue to evolve this heavier sound on their next full length album. You can really hear the Black Sabbath and Neurosis influences on this one, even more so than on Metridium Fields. My only complaint with this is I wish it was longer. With that being said every track on this record is really good. Any fan of Giant Squid will love this. |

I've heard a lot of negative things about this record. I've heard that it's long, it can be boring, and the music is repetitive. After listening to this record and giving it time to sink in, I can understand why someone would think this would be boring. But, at the same time I would only think that only an impatient listener would consider this boring. This concept album, is too interesting once you understand the story to ever be called boring. The record can be long but only if you are not used to listening to bludgeoning metal or if you aren't interested in the lyrics. Can the music be repetitive? Only if you are half listening to the music. The drumming may be a little bit repetitive at times but not one song on this album sounds the same as the next. This album is a great album but you have to give it time to sink in. It's probably not going to come to you immediately and will require multiple listens. However, once it does finally sink in, this is one of those albums that will reward your ears for doing so. |

Hands (US-ND) Give Me Rest | 5.0 |
I was not expected to blown away by this as much as I was. This record is truly amazing. How the sputnik community has not heard this is truly beyond me. This sounds very similar to The Amia Venera Landscape vocal wise and Trenches sound wise. Everyone likes both of those band's albums. Why not this one?!?! |
Hark Crystalline | 4.0 |
Hath Of Rot And Ruin | 4.0 |
This is really pretty damn good. This is similar to Slugdge but just not as progressive. This is mainly blackened death metal mixed with a little bit of progressive metal. While this might not be that original a lot of what is done here works. This will definitely have you banging your head. I agree that this album should have been shortened a little bit but for what it's worth, it's a good listen. This band definitely has a lot of potential. |
Helioscope Noir | 2.5 |
Tried to like this a album a lot but the horrible clean/hardcore vocals and the band sounding like Cult of Luna lite just kills it for me. The album is not bad by any means, it's just painfully average. The next time around they should try to do something to separate themselves from every other post metal band. |

High on Fire De Vermis Mysteriis | 4.5 |
I prematurely rated this a 4.5 after only listening to it once. After a few more listens, this is still worth a 4.5. This blows most of their other stuff out of the water. Not saying that their older music is bad, this is just so much better. Just about every song on here is good in comparison to Death is This Communion and Snakes for the Divine which had a few good songs and a lot of filler. I definitely recommend this for those who were disappointed by the lack of heaviness in Mastodon's The Hunter since this is very similar to an old Mastodon record. Standouts: Madness of an Architect, Romulus and Remus, and Bloody Knuckles. |

Before I begin I'll say that Celestial Tear for some reason just sticks in your head after the first listen. I'm not really a fan of death metal but this is excellent. In Mourning finds a perfect balance in mixing melodic riffs, clean vocals, progressive metal, and death growls. Every song on this album is excellent, even as you converge later in the album the songs don't get stale or boring. I would rate this a 5 but I've read many reviews on line that state that In Mourning sounds like Opeth. I've never listened to Opeth and until I do I won't know if they are a knockoff off of the metal legends or they are a band creating excellent music. Either way, I feel fine in rating this a 4.5. |
In Vain (NO) Aenigma | 4.5 |
Who would have known that a metal band could throw in a saxophone into their music and it would work. Definitely a contender for AOTY. Any fan of Opeth, Enslaved, or progressive bm/dm should listen to this. |

Intronaut Void | 3.0 |
Album is okay. The album is really heavy but the songs lack direction. Faultlines and Nostalgic Echo are really the only songs that stand out but the album isn't that bad. |
Intronaut The Challenger | 3.0 |
Don't really care for all of the live songs but the first three songs kick major ass, especially Whittler of Fortune and Deep Architecture. Would be rated higher if more than half of the songs hadn't already been released on Null and Void. |
Intronaut Null | 3.5 |
Intronaut Habitual Levitations | 3.5 |
Disappointing to say the least. This could have been so much better. |
Intronaut Prehistoricisms | 4.0 |
What an incredible metal album. There are a few misfires here and there but for the most part it rocks. Not completely original but creative enough to keep the listeners attention throughout the album. The Literal Black Cloud, Prehistoricisms, Any Port and The Reptilian Brain are stand outs, but that is not saying the other songs are not good. The Reptilian brain is soooo psychedlically good that listening to it makes you feel like your on acid. |
Intronaut Valley of Smoke | 4.0 |
This album can be summed up into one sentence: Intronaut's version of Crack the Skye. |
Intronaut The Direction of Last Things | 4.0 |
Definitely better than Habitual Levitations but I can't help but feel like I've heard this record before. Most of this album sounds like a mixture of Void, Prehistoricisms, and Valley of Smoke. While none of that is a bad thing, it would have been nice to hear something completely new from Intronaut. |
Iron Maiden The Final Frontier | 3.5 |
Irreversible Ashes | 4.5 |
Great post/progressive metal. This EP is nearly perfect (except for the weird guitar sounds). Looking forward to hearing new music from these guys in the future. Can't believe these guys are unknown in the metal community. |
ISIS In the Absence of Truth | 3.0 |
This record is good but its missing something. What it is missing is that "umph" that made Panoptican so awesome. This record is just plain boring at times. Where Panoptican rewarded you for your patience, this album does not. And its not that big of a step from Panoptican. Most of the tracks scream, "been there, done that." I definitely see why there was only more Isis album after this one. Seems like they ran out of ways to advance their sound. With that being said, some tracks do kick some serious ass. Not in Rivers, but in Drops, Over Root and Thorn, and Holy Tears are great songs but three great songs and 6 mediocre to all right songs don't make a very good album. |
ISIS The Red Sea | 3.5 |
I'm marveled that this was Isis in their infancy. When most bands start off they don't sound the same 5-10 years down the road. With Isis, you can easily see glimpses of what they would come to be. There is really not too much ambiance here but when it does show up, it reminds you of Oceanic or Panopticon. The heavyness that is normally associated with Isis is here as well, even more so. The only thing that drags this album down is the atrocious vocals. Despite the vocals being bad this is definitely worth listening too. This was once described as being heavy and crushing enough to destroy a small city. Well crushing and destroying is definitely what this is. |
ISIS Celestial | 4.0 |
ISIS Mosquito Control | 4.0 |
ISIS Wavering Radiant | 4.0 |
ISIS Panopticon | 4.5 |
ISIS Oceanic | 5.0 |
This is imo much better than Panoptican. Not saying that Panoptican isn't a classic in its own right, its just that Oceanic is better. Oceanic mixes the perfect balance between ambient and heavy. Every song on here is excellent with Carry, From Sinking, and Hym being the standout tracks. The vocals leave a little bit to be desired but the musicianship more than makes up for it. This is definitely Isis at their best. |

Nothing new brought to the table here but it is a brutal and fun record. Probably one of the first really good deathcore albums to come out. |

Juicy J Blue Dream & Lean | 3.5 |
In all of my years of listening to rap, never have I heard an hour and half album dedicated to drugs. Yes this album is way too long but it's mind boggling to try and fathom how one person can rap so much about drugs! If anyone really does as much drugs as Juicy J claims to do I would really fear for their health, lol. Anyways, anyone looking for something to listen to while getting ready to go to a club or while getting hammered, this is the record for you. |

Best rap album I have heard in a long time! This album would be a five if it wasn't for all the guest appearances. They aren't bad, they just take attention off of Kanye. The lyrics, the beats, the actual instruments in the background all help this album breathe new life into the sorry, stale genre that is rap today. Kanye might be an asshole but I could care less as long as he keeps making music like this. |

Solid sounding doom mixed with stoner and sludge influences that never really gets boring. Sounds like the love child of old Mastodon and new Pallbearer. |
Khoma The Second Wave | 4.0 |
The lack of harsh vocals pushes the crushing soundscapes to the forefront of the music making the band sounds like Cult of Luna "light". Nothing bad about that all. Nothing at all.... |

This was a lot better than I expected. Didn't expect the different genres that each of these men bring to the table to mesh that well. Glad I was wrong. |
Killer Mike R.A.P. Music | 5.0 |
All I can say is wow! If Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was a fresh of breath air to hip-hop then has to be a genre-changing album. This album is like pays homage to old school hip-hop with it's gritty stories and intellectual lyrics. As a black man, this album spoke to me like no other rap album has in years. That alone makes this worthy of a 5 |

Killswitch Engage Incarnate | 3.5 |
At this point you either love this band or hate them. If you like them you will probably like this album even though they don't do anything different on this record other than Jesse trying out new vocal techniques. If you hate them then this will add more fuel to the fire. |

I know I'm going to get hate for saying this but this album is fucking boring. I understand this is shoegaze and not black metal but I still found this extremely sleep inducing. There are some stellar guitar parts sprinkled here but the songs seem to blend into one another making it hard to realize when the song you're listening has ended. This could have been a really good album but the lack of variety from song to song and the riduculous lengths they all have make this an album I would only listen to if I were getting ready to go to bed. |

Last Chance to Reason Level 3 | 4.0 |
I think Omaha must have had a bad bag of crack when he reviewed this. So what if LCTR decided to "mature" and change their sound a little, decided to go with almost all clean vocals, and decided to mix the guitars high in the production. This is still a good record and most people who listen to this will not even think of the album's flaws because the album's strengths far outweigh them. |

I guess all the people on this site trying to 5 this as a joke and the other people rating this high because they actually like this shit forget that Limp Bizkit is now and has always been a shit band. Sad, Sad, sad. I'm a huge Metallica fan and even though I thought even the universally hated Load, Re-Load, and St. Anger had their moments, this has none. I could go on a long diatribe about how horrible this album is but everybody knows how horrible this album is by now. Sigh... Was hoping Metallica was taking a step in the right direction after Death Magnetic but they have shown all of their fans that they could give a shit if their music is good enough for their fans. Lou Reed's vocals are so bad I'm not even going to mention them. Hopefully Metallica and Lou Reed disappear if they plan on making more terrible music like this. |
Love Sex Machine Love Sex Machine | 3.5 |
Love Sex Machine Asexual Anger | 4.0 |
A lot better than it's predecessor. Whereas their self-titled was layer upon layer of crushing filthy sludge, too many of the songs sounded the same and the vocal delivery was sometimes off. LSM decide to trim the fat on this one and submit a more streamlined version of sludge. While this is not as heavy as their previous record, this album is more focused, more accessible, and generally more enjoyable. |

Mastodon The Workhorse Chronicles [DVD] | 3.5 |
The best thing about this DVD are the interviews. The interviews tell the story of how Mastodon was created and provides a glimpse on how they went from nothing to who they are today. The different performances range from good to bad. Most of the early performances with their original lead singer are awful but it at least helps you see how their sounds has progressed. Standout performances include excellent live versions of Hearts Alive and Megalodon. Would rate this a little higher if the vocals sounded better on most songs but its still a good DVD. More like a 3.8 than 3.5 but not a 4.0. |
Mastodon The Hunter | 3.5 |
Initially gave this a 4.5 rating because of Mastodon taking a new direction in their music. However after giving this album time to digest, seeing them play the songs from the Hunter live with their older stuff, and realizing that I have listened to this album the least of all Mastodon albums, I must change my rating. The Hunter, while good in it's own right, does not stack up to their older music. All of Mastodon's other albums took me at least a month to digest everything that was going in the music. The Hunter only took me a few listens to get everything. Yes making the album more simplistic is a new approach for Mastodon, but it brings down the quality of the music, making it less memorable. Save for The Hunter, Thickening, and The Sparrow, there is really nothing else special in the rest of the songs. Yes, the proggyness is still there, but there is a lot missing. Hopefully they remember how to make real metal on their next album (Look at High on Fire's latest offering) and don't continue to follow in Metallica's footsteps. One "Black Album" is forgiveable but another one is not. |
Mastodon Cold Dark Place | 3.5 |
Mastodon Remission | 4.0 |
Mastodon Blood Mountain | 4.0 |
Mastodon Live at the Aragon | 4.0 |
Mastodon puts on one hell of a show at the Aragon. Their muscianship is top notch and the trippy visuals help to add to the already trippy subject material of Crack the Skye. Mastodon even superbly plays some of their old material with the best being the material from Remission. Troy Sander's vocals are the standout during the performance. His vocal range has improved a lot and he still proves he can growl and belt harsh vocals with the best of them. Bill Kelliher's vocals on the Remission songs and Bran Dailor's vocals on the Crack the Skye songs are also highlights. The only low points on this DVD are Brent Hind's vocals which are atrocious in comparison to everyone else' and the fact that Mastodon barely displays any emotion when playing. Overall though, this is an excellent Live DVD. No where near as good as such classics as Nirvana's or Alice in Chain's MTV unplugged but still very good. Any fan of Mastodon should own (download) this. |

Sigh... I know everybody thinks this is a really bad album. While I won't disagree, the album did have some listenable songs like Some King of Monster, Invisible Kid, Unamed Feeling, and St. Anger. However, the other songs are so bad they overshadow the songs that are okay. Lars drumming brings this album down a lot too. His drum kit sounds like dish pans and it takes away too much from the overall quality of the sound. |

Expected more from the album based upon the reviews. Album is above average metalcore but there is nothing really special that puts it heads and shoulders above the rest of the genre. If anything, the harsh vocals are stagnant and no range at all is expressed in them. The clean vocals are the only ones that actually show any emotion. However, those are really the only complaints about the album. Album is a good mix of progressive metalcore that is actually done right. |

Album could be a 5 if they just extended the length of some of the songs. |

Never felt this bad after hearing about the death of a legend. I know Scott Weiland just passed away a few weeks ago but we all knew that was going to happen sooner or later. Lemmy though was 70 and still living like he was in his early 20s. May he be an inspiration to all of us who enjoy drinking like we don't need a liver. R.I.P hard man. You will definitely be missed. This could easily be a 5 if the songs weren't so fucking
long! The words "over-blown" and "pretentious" come
to mind when I think about the wankery and self
masturbating of the instruments on almost every song.
Despite the albums few negatives, the band does a
great job of making blackened, progessive death metal
worth listening to. The constant changing from clean,
to black, to death metal vocals is done beautifully.
Shorten the songs next time guys and you will have a
perfect album. |
Ne Obliviscaris Citadel | 4.5 |
The instrumental passages on this alone make this record a must listen. Yes, everything has been improved from Portal of I but the beatifulness of the violin and the other instruments interwined really make this record. |

Even though I have listened to this a few times over, I'm still shocked that Norma Jean is able to maintain such ferocity and fury for the entire length of this album. Just when you think it's about to let up, it doesn't. Possible metalcore/hardcore AOTY |
Obscura Diluvium | 3.5 |
Obscure Sphinx Void Mother | 4.5 |
One of the few bands with a female lead vocalist who can cover the whole vocal range from angelic singing to throat shredding shrieking. Instrumentally everybody brings their A game with all the instruments shinning in different areas throughout the album. I'm not sure what the lyrics are about but I have to imagine it has something to do with darkness and bleakness because of the of atmosphere presented. Don't let this band having a female vocalist stop you from listening to one of the best metal albums of the year. |

I didn't like it the first couple of times listening to it but after listening to it for a couple of months it finally clicked and I think it is great. Though not as good as Kezia, it is still a damn good album. The first four songs are easy listens, the rest of the album takes a while to grow on you. |

Better than Fortress but not Kezia. Reminds me why I liked PTH in the first place. |
Protest the Hero Kezia | 4.5 |
This album seems like a breath of fresh air compared to other bands that do hardcore/metal/metalcore/whatever horribly wrong (BTBAM, Converge). The lyrics are inspiring and the lead singer actually has good clean and screaming vocals. The rest of the musicianship is top notch as well. This is one of the few albums I can listen to from the first song to the last song without skipping one song. This is not my first attempt at listening to hardcore/metal/metalcore/whatever but this is the first time I've listened to it and actually loved it. Bravo PTH, Bravo! |

melnadaid, you are another idiot talking shit about a band you obviously know nothing about. Look

album were hit and miss but I bet you wouldn't be able to get through any of their older albums
with the understanding of why they are rated so high. Go back and listen to music you know like
emo and hip-hop but be careful insulting a great post-metal band, a genre you know nothing about.

This was probably the first post-metal album that I have ever listened to and loved form the first listen. While listening to this I actually felt like I was traveling through space with the astronaut and could feel his descent into madness once he got to Europa and realized he was alone. I would write more but my words will not give this album the justice it deserves. An awesome record. One of the best post-metal albums I have ever heard. |

I remember picking this album up when it came out in 06 or 07 whenever their single Ladies and Gentlemen came out. This album is easily the worst album I have ever bought. The single tricked me into thinking that this was a hard rock album but this isn't hard rock. This is pussy rock posing as hard rock. This album tosses horrible, horrible ballad, after ballad, after ballad at you. Sounds like someone broke the leads singers heart and he never got over it. I was so bored by song number 6 I quit listening and never finished it. |

This is a real noticeable drop in quality compared to their first two albums. This is a good example of metalcore done wrong. This album is very bland, very boring, and below average metalcore. this is probably the best progressive metal record of 2012. |
Sunpocrisy Eyegasm, Hallelujah! | 4.5 |
Sunpocrisy utilizes all of the potential shown on their first record to create a beast of an album by changing things up a bit. Where their first album sounded like progressive death metal, this album's sound can badly be described as progressive post-metal with psychedelic vibes. If you can really get into this album it can make you feel life you are transcending the physical plain of existence into a dream like world. The contrast between heavy and calm is done almost perfectly. |

Tried to like this album. Really did but it was just so boring. Every song sounds the same which is truly disappointing considering the range of the lead singer. Most of the songs on here need to be shortened by at least a minute and a half to make them listenable. I'm still a Textures fan and am definitely looking forward to the new album but Silhouettes sucks. |

The emotional depth of this album is extremely deep if you take the time to pay attention to the lyrics. The subject matter of death, loss, grief, and mourning may not be new subject matter but the way The Atlas Moth express their emotions in regards to this is impressive. |

The Mire Volume: II | 4.0 |
The Northern Imperium | 3.0 |
The Ocean Pelagial | 2.0 |
HORRIBLE VOCALS+uninspired musicianship+loss of heaviness+godawful lyrics = The worst The Ocean album of their career. Even Heliocentric was better than this steaming pile |
The Ocean Heliocentric | 3.5 |
Let me first say that my opinion might be a little bit biased because the first The Ocean album I listened to was Anthroprocentric, which is awesome in its own right. With that being said, I have yet to hear the angry, pissed off The Ocean that can be heard on the first few albums. I'm working my way back through their discography so after listening to Anthroprocentric this did not sound as bad as everybody said it is. Granted, this is even way different from Anthroprocentric and some of the songs just fucking suck, the album is still highly enjoyable. It might take at least 4-5 listens before it grows on you, but it is worth it. Ptolemy Was Wrong and Epiphany suck donkey dick and some of the lyrics on Swallowed by the Earth are laughable but the rest of the album is good to go. Maybe my opinion will change once I listen to the great Precambrian and the brutal Aeolian, but only time will tell. Until then, this album is pretty damn good. |
The Ocean Aeolian | 4.0 |
This is easily one of the heaviest, most crushing, most brutal post-metal albums ever. Kind of hard to really describe the sound without sounding too fanboyish, but after listening to this album, anyone can see why brutal and crushing are tossed around. This is right up there with Neurosis Through Silver in Blood, Cult of Luna The Beyond, and Isis Oceanic as far as post metal heaviness goes. This album may not have the diversity or complexity of PreCambrian but it makes up for it with its sheer aggression and its unrelenting heaviness. Other post metal bands have explored there heavy sides but few have come up with anything nearly as heavy as this record. Not every song on here is really good but the quality of The City in the Sea, Austerity, Killing the Flies, Queen of the Food-Chain, and Inertia more than make up for the shortfalls. This is definitely not for the faint of heart. Only those looking to be knocked on there ass by brutal music should listen. |
The Ocean Precambrian | 4.5 |
One of the few post metal albums that says fuck the usual wankery and just kicks ass.The heavy parts of disc 1 are heavy enough to destroy a small city, while the more progressive parts of disc 2 are simply prog metal at it's best. |
The Ocean Anthropocentric | 4.5 |
I know a lot of people disagree but I thought this album was pretty damn good. Every song on the album is enjoyable which is not something that can be said about most albums that come out today. Though the lyrics of this album really piss me off, its hard to let the lyrics keep me from listening to this. "Willie Zum Utergang" is one of the best instrumentals I've heard in a long time, even though it sounds like it was written by Isis. Only complaint with this album is the lack of overall heaviness. It is heavy in spurts but after listening to "Anthropocentric" pummel you into submission with its heaviness, the rest of the heavy moments in the album are no where near as heavy. |
The Ocean Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic | 4.5 |
Didn't like their last album but man does this slay |
The Ocean Fluxion | 5.0 |
Better than Precambrian in my opinion. Might need to listen to Precambrian more to make sure but as of right now, Fluxion is better hands down. Fluxion is more progressive than Precambrian without sacrificing any of the heaviness. The Human Stain, Isla Del Sol, and The Greatest Bane are some of the heaviest, proggy songs the Ocean has ever made. Nazca and Fluxion are also great instrumentals, especially considering the Ocean hasn't made any good instrumentals since. All in all, I think this is the Ocean's best album. |

Don't know why the staff reviewer gave this such a bad rating. A classic album this is not, especially with all of the autotune and with this sounding like a Killswitch clone record at times. However, the lyrics, vocals, and energy put forth into this album more than make up for it. This record really does sound the like the hymn of a broken man. Like someone who has experienced a lot in life and is trying to pass on good advice to others going through the same thing. If I wasn't mistaken, I would think this is Christian metal. Regardless, any fan of Killswitch or those looking for inspiration will definitely enjoy this. |

Tombs Savage Gold | 2.5 |
Tombs Winter Hours | 4.0 |
After listening to the Path of Totality and being utterly disappointed I didn't expect much from this album. Boy was I wrong! This album is a lot better than Path of Totality IMO. Where most of the songs on POT sound the same, the songs have a nice variety on Winter Hours. The best thing about this album is not that Tombs does a good job of sounding like a Neurosis/Isis hybrid band. The best thing is the thick wall of sound they create. You would swear that there are 5 to 6 members in this band, but three guys, just three guys make this crushing sound. The only negatives about this album are its length (a whopping 37 minutes) and the number of interludes/instrumentals. The instrumentals are not bad in themselves, its just that after being pummeled by tracks like Merrimack and Seven Stars The Angel of Death you want more. After loving this album, I think I'll give POT another listen and see if anything clicks. |

Underoath Erase Me | 2.0 |
If bland and boring is what Underoath was aiming for, they have met their goal with Erase Me. Gone is the heaviness that made Underoath, Underoath, being replaced with a more melodic, alternative rock sound. I don't mind the change in musical direction, it just doesn't sound very good. Hopefully they go back to their roots on the next album or at least execute the transition to melodic music better. |

Really didn't like this album the first time couple of times I listened to it. After the video for Paper Lung came out I decided to listen to the album again. After 4 or 5 more listens the album finally clicked. Some of the songs on here are really amazing like Who Will Guard the Guardians, In Completion, and Driftwood. However, the repetitive nature of the lyrics keep the album from being even better. But... This album has made me an Underoath fan. |

Decided to listen to this based upon BigHans review... Boy was I blown away. Every song on this album is good! The vocals are great, the drumming is great, and the riffing is great. Can't really think of anything bad to say about this album, all though the death metal vocals are comical on Evelyn, it doesn't really bring the song down. Album of the year? Maybe...... |

The best post metal album of 2012. This album is epic in every

This is one of the last rap albums that I listened to in high school before I became a metalhead. Though I wasn't a fan of Wu-Tang before this album, I became a fan after listening to it repeatedly. Some of the songs are excellent like Hollow Bones, Click Click, Chamber Music, and the emotionally powerful I Can't go to Sleep. All of the songs aren't good and some even resemble filler but this is still a good album nonetheless. |
