I have the strangest respect for how terrible this album is. There isn't a morsel of originality in the whole of this album. It's pretentious, ridiculous, mindless breakdownage... and I love it. Great music for when you want something heavy but you don't want to think, because it's all legitimately, crushingly heavy. Gave it a 2.5 because I couldn't decide on a rating, so I went neutral lol |

As solid as anyone would expect. Tracks 2-9 are all excellent and live up to the level of quality that Counterparts has set for themselves. Sadly the opener does basically nothing for me because I don't really come to Counterparts for tracks that are literally just 00--0000--0-0-00 chugs. It seriously sounds like the opening to every metalcore album ever made. The closer is certainly a decent song but it leaves something to be desired, especially since their previous three records have had such colossal, satisfying finales. It's still a thoroughly listenable record, though, and it maintains Counterparts' high caliber song writing. |

Somewhat disappointing. I can't help but feel like this story line has had one too many miles put on it. Not nearly as memorable or volatile as Travels. Still, it's an incredibly enjoyable album that's worth the journey. |
Defeater Travels | 4.5 |
The lyrical expertise of Travels somewhat eclipses it's musical quality, which not a gripe by any means because this is some of the best lyrical story telling one could ever encounter. An astoundingly emotional album that cuts down to its foundation of sorrow, pain, bitterness and anger within the defining first word: "Unwanted." |

Tentative 4.5 but this could totally grow to a 5. Not a bad track here, just solid fucking songwriting and absolutely mind-blowing production. As someone else said, it's like Nails, just minus the meathead lyrics. They also really cranked up the black metal influences (blast beats EVERYWHERE) and there are parts here that get kind of mathy in in the best way. God, I'm so happy this album is finally here. |

The main thing holding this back is the vocals. The cleans are cringe af and the screams are
varied enough but completely basic and don't have any real character to them. That said, this
album is held up almost exclusively by the riffs. Oh god the riffs. |

Haven't been absolutely floored by an album like this in years. It's exactly what I wanted to hear rfrom them; a continuation of the sound they mastered on Polar Similar that turns into a full-on revolution of that sound as the album goes. The last four tracks are some of the weirdest, rcatchiest, most beautiful-yet-haunting material they've ever written. |

A pretty big "checks out how low our gutarz sound" fest, though definitely enjoyable thanks to the razor sharp production and cool melodic sections. I would love to see these guys experiment with more ideas than just Meshuggah-esque chugging and crazy vocal/key change acrobatics. If they develop their softer side more they could really go places. |

This is shockingly excellent, especially after TKOL, which had its moments but never felt like it had much life in it. Almost every song takes a turn at some point and evolves, which makes for a wonderfully dynamic Radiohead album - the likes of which we haven't heard since 2007. This is pure Radiohead, in the best way. |

Without Dustin's lyrics this would definitely be a 3.5 for me. His writing on this album is jaw-droppingly good. Understanding the meanings and context behind each song makes everything so powerful. Blur is ten times better when you realize it's all about the bands' reactions to all of the crazy stuff going on in their lives during the making of the album (Riley and Eddy's Dad dying, Teppei's mom dying, Dustin's dad getting diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, the band's stuff getting stolen TWICE...). Such an amazingly angry/frustrated/painful/sad song, which is then followed up by the triumphantly uplifting tracks like Words In the Water, Anthology and Disarmed, giving the album a sense of finality and victory over adversity that is so tangible. |
Thrice To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere | 3.5 |
What seemed to be shaping up as a much edgier album actually flaunts its best during the moments rof positivity and warmth. "The Long Defeat" serves as an affecting and much needed anthem of hope rwhile the gorgeous "Stay With Me" nearly brought me to tears with a beautifully simple story of lovers rin wartime. There's still a lot of skepticism and scathing rebukes of corrupt leadership, islamophobia, retc... but the best of TBEITBN is found in its brightest moments. Except for Hurricane... which is one rof the best damn songs Thrice has ever written. |
