Gallant's wonderful voice isn't enough to save this collection of bland, uninspired alt. R&B

Favorite Tracks: Jupiter Grayscale |
Gallant Ology | 2.5 |
The comparisons to Frank Ocean feel inevitable but ultimately unwarranted. Gallant expands his
sound from his EP with live drums and overall better instrumentation. Some of the songs are
similarly structured, but there's enough variety to keep it fresh. I hear shades of 90's R&B acts
like Boys II Men and Seal, with a little bit of boom bap hip-hop at points. Much better production
than the EP. However, at 16 songs (with 2 interludes, 3 if you count "Oh, Universe"), it does
overstay its welcome at points, namely Counting and Open Up. Still, I would recommend this album
to anyone who is a fan of silky smooth falsettos.

If there's one album from 2015 I would force everyone to listen to, it'd be this one. It's an
incredibly intimate and emotionally hard-hitting record due to the sparseness in the soundscapes
and the vulnerability in the lyrics. The songs are mostly just Baker and her guitar, gently
plucking away at the strings and using a looper pedal to layer melodies on top of the rhythms. The
songs sound empty and lonely, matching perfectly with the albums lyrical content touching on
death, depression, substance abuse, and suicide. It's an incredibly personal album to the point
that, similar to Carrie & Lowell, it almost feels as if the listener really shouldn't be hearing
these songs.
In the midst of all this is Baker's relationship with God. It's a complicated one, with her asking
questions like, "I wrote you love letters, and sung them in my house...the broken strings and
amplifiers scream with holy noise / in hopes to draw you out, but if no one sings along are you
still proud of when I open my mouth?" on the opener "Blacktop." On "Vessels," Baker reflects on
the brokenness and blackness of her own body and soul, and how her broken body is just a "house
for [her] eyes purchased with a bleeding side." She ends the album with an instrumental of "In
Christ Alone" at the end of "Go Home." During recording, her preamp picked up a radio transmission
of a nearby church, sort of as an answer to Baker's constant cries to him throughout the album.
Seriously. Listen to this album. It's incredible.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this EP is Tullgren's vocals, which are twangy at times and
incredibly evocative and emotional at others. I highly recommend this EP.

Mitksi Miyawaki's newest album is a sequel of sorts to her 2014 release "Bury Me at Makeout Creek." While her DIY punk/garage rock sound hasn't changed much, "Puberty 2" digs even deeper emotionally, with Mitski searching for what happiness is to her at this point in her life. She isn't sure if it's to be found in relationships, what others think of her, or somewhere else entirely. The songs on the album range from quiet slow burners like "Once More to See You" to the abrasive and in-your-face "My Body's Made of Crushed Stars." Lead single "Your Best American Girl" captures the feeling and sentiment of this album perfectly. - FAVORITE TRACKS: Happy, Dan the Dancer, Your Best American Girl, Thursday Girl, Crack Baby |

Prass exhibits beautiful songwriting that's reminiscent of musical theatre, baroque pop, and 70's
era singer-songwriter on perhaps the best break-up album of 2015. Perhaps the biggest standout is
Prass's vocal work. Her thin, wavering vocals add a tinge of helplessness and weariness to songs
about heartbreak and infidelity.

This mixtape wins the award for the most warm fuzzy feelings given to me this year. I can't really explain it, but there's just something about this tape that I absolutely adore. The jazzy instrumentals and beats immediately calm and soothe the listener, with the xylophone-like synths evoking images of childhood toys. Noname's rapping has an air of optimism to it, even when discussing difficult topics like drug abuse, funerals, and abortion. She addresses the guilt of past sins she carries, and how she's learned and grown in the face of them. - FAVORITE TRACKS: Yesterday, Diddy Bop, Reality Check, Freedom, Bye Bye Baby |

It's an amazing roller coaster ride in post-punk/noise rock/industrial music. Though it's only 7
songs, it works to the benefit of the album. Each song is an all-out assault against the senses,
and I'm not sure the listener would be able to take much more after the album's conclusion
(especially after the fantastic closer, "Death"). Offensive name aside (the band said they would
be changing it for their next album), this is one heck of an album and is definitely worth
checking out if you like more experimental music.

(heads up, incoming extremely biased opinion)
Oh gosh I don't know where to begin. They had something going on their first two albums, and then
they scrapped everything that was good about them for their least interesting and least unique
quality: the synthesizer. Even if I weren't so betrayed by this change, I still wouldn't like this
album. The hooks are annoying, the production and song writing is lazy, and the melodies and
instrumentation are nonexistent. None of the songs come close to hitting 4 minutes in length,
which I suppose is merciful, given that the lot of them are crap. Tracks like "Angel, Please,"
"What I Do For U," "For Once," and "Is It Too Much" sound half finished. You cannot convince me
that those songs are not demos. They're so lifeless and directionless. Honestly, fewer albums
frustrate me as much as this one does.

I've listened to this album so many times and I still don't know what to think of it. I'd like to
echo the sentiments of TwigTW, though—this is an okay pop record, but it lacks the risks and
experimentation of the previous two records. "Dead" is about as risky as the album gets, and it
still feels pretty safe. "Open" and "No Promises" are probably the only two tracks from here I'll
feel the need to revisit. Allen Tate's performance feels pretty weak on this album too, which is a
bummer. We need more baritones in pop music. |

While The Twin may not be as immediately accessible or beautiful as the previous one, it?s just as rewarding if you take the time to sink into it. On the surface, it seems as though Sound of Ceres?s sound hasn?t changed much between the two records. The icy synths and weightless vocals are still very much present, but The Twin feels more mechanical and colder than Nostalgia. The album feels more vast, more open, which is fitting as the theme of the album is one of planetary exploration. Sound of Ceres doesn?t make music and songs so much as they make different worlds and experiences to immerse yourself in and explore every nook and cranny of.rFAVORITE TRACKS: Gemini Scenic, Outer Century, Solar Mirror 9, Eden V |

I feel like I would have enjoyed this a lot more if they hadn't released 7 to 8 songs ahead of time. The entirety of The Other Ones EP shows up here, and 3 more from A Taste of Silver EP. Along with those, they released the track "Revolution Indifference" as a single as well, so there's 8 tracks before the album's even out. Then of the 3 new ones on here, one's only an intro, so we essentially only get 2 new tracks. Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic album; I was just very disappointed they reused a bunch of old material for their first full length album, and it definitely took away from my enjoyment of the album. |

2015 was filled with albums I was highly anticipating, and the sophomore effort from Israeli
shoegazers was among the top of that list. Very little details were known about the album to begin
with, but they slowly started releasing new tracks, beginning with "Badeshe Mul Gilman" (which
ultimately did not appear on the album) and "Ein Li Makom." The singles that appeared on the album
didn't present much change in sound from their first album, which wasn't a bad thing in the
slightest. The tracks were still hazy, grating, and incredibly punchy; "Hadavhar" is almost dance-
able, in a weird way. The guitars are still chunky and meaty sounding, the drums still have that
booming sound, and Yuval Haring's vocals are still as powerful as ever. The moodier tracks are
still there too, with "Klum" and "At Chavera," but with mixed results compared to The World Is
Well Lost. That being said, it's still a very good sophomore record, and I look forward to seeing
what they continue to do.

I remember listening to this freshman year of college when I was really into this sort of music (you know, soundcloud-alt-rnb-trap-influenced-the-xx cover bands) and I didn't really care for it. Honestly, I think this is one of the albums that got me out of that phase. I went back and listened to it recently, and holy crap is it boring. I really don't care for this style of music at all. |
