Alexi Laiho may have tried to kill himself right around the time this album was released, but the quality didn't suffer at all. Brutality and keyboard soloing take a backseat to guitar shredding and Mozart in this neoclassical extreme metal classic. Alexi's vocals veer into the black metal realm as his piercing shrieks are backed by gut-wrenching drums and bass complete with gothic keyboard atmospheres. The licks and solos here must've made Malmsteem cry into his Fender as Laiho's searing tones leave no survivors from this dark, classical-influenced extreme power metal record. Absolutely essential for those interested in extreme Finnish power metal.

Bodom's sophomore effort is speedier, more frantic and mechanical than Something Wild and missteps in a few areas, but ultimately not enough to significantly detract from the overall package.

It still doesn't feel quite there yet for that Children of Bodom sound (though I also think this one can't replicate the sound of the previous outing too...) when it comes to their second offering in Hatebreeder. Classical riffs are littered amongst the record, and it does scream classic Bodom in many spots, but overall it seesm to be lacking that a certain punch that I seemed to find on Hate Crew and Rollow the Reaper. Still a pretty damn solid record, and a band with a pretty neat sound.

Children of Bodom's best album by a mile. In light of the recent tragedy that is Blooddrunk it is essential to say how great they used to be. Hatebreeder shows COB at their neo-classical best with great songs like Silent Night, Bodom Night, Downfall, and my personal favorite, Towards Dead End. If only they would just go back to putting out material like this.

Children of bodoms best in my opinion and one of my fav albums of all time. Alexi lahio shows his skill to the max with this album. Very catchy songs with smidgets of neo- classical thrown in. There later albums dont compare to this release.

From Espoo Finland Children of Bodom released Something Wild in 1997, which showed what the band was capable of. Now with their second album Hatebreeder released in 1999 Children of Bodom took what they started on Something Wild and perfected it. I first heard ?Bed of Razors? and was hooked from there. With melodic guitar lines, harsh vocals and catchy riffs. Janne Warmen also plays an important role with his superb skills on the keys, he and Alexi produce some amazing solos. Although never known for his writing skills. Alexi Laiho was at his peak of songwriting here in my opinion.

Children of Bodom play an interesting blend of power, black and death metal that would be refined and honed further on later releases, most notably Follow The Reaper. As it is, this is a step up the ladder, but the band was not quite there yet even though the guitar/keyboard flurries are already extremely plentiful here. The main detractor are Laiho's vocals, which are too grating and shrieky and would be better refined on later efforts. Nevertheless it's a quality metal album worth your time.
