By 1979, Led Zeppelin had destroyed Led Zeppelin. The hedonistic, chaotic lifestyles the band had led for years had caused Page and Bonham to sink into a sea of cocaine, heroin and psychological issues, while Plant was mourning the death of his son and the disillusionment of his life. 'In Through The Out Door' is therefore a Jones album. Brainy though he was, Jones couldn't cover up the audible decay of his bandmembers: his strings and keys were forced to carry much of the orchestration of the album. Consequentially, arrogant and godly is out and sappy is in ('I'm Gonna Crawl', 'All My Love'). Page's solos are fitful, simply a handful of notes spat out schizophrenically; his absence and fall is noticed most painfully on the schmaltzy 'Fool In The Rain' and the embarrassing Kentucky hoe-down 'Hot Dog'. 'In The Evening' may give us the last great Zeppelin track, but it's sad to think that the tepid, tame 'I'm Gonna Crawl' is the final hurrah of rock's greatest group.

In Through the Out Door is easily Zeppelin's weakest studio effort (pre-breakup). While I applaud the band for venturing into uncharted waters here, they simply come up dry. The songs simply lack comeback value and this just feels like a botched-up experiment in general.

Why do people hate this album? It good. I like it. Fool In The Rain and All My Love are great songs, as well as Carouselambra, the 10 minute epic, which is one of the band's longest songs. Sure, it's not Houses Of The Holy or Physical Grafitti. It's In Through The Out Door, and I wouldn't want it any other way. JPJ basically made this album on his own, and I respect that. But one song that lacks is the annoying Hot Dog, quite possibly Zeppelin's worst song ever. I sat through it a few times, but I never liked it. And the album doesn't have enough songs. 43 minutes and 7 songs? That's like a Rush album. And Zeppelin ain't Rush.

#NotMyLedZep as Gen Z would say. Don?t know what the attempt was with this record after a while out of the studio and off tour, but it certainly didn?t work as far as I am concerned. Starts off decent with In The Evening, then goes bad, especially from Fool In The Rain. Last 4 tracks might all be Zep?s worst.

A lot of people hated this album and I can’t see why. Okay this isn’t there best work but you should most certainly not hate it. I cannot complain about any track except for the worst song they ever wrote, Hot Dog, other than that there are some really awesome tracks. Think about In the Evening, it’s a great starting track. You can’t help but start to jump. It really keeps you on you feet. Also how can you forget about Fool in the Rain? Its got one of the catchiest feel to it. Another great track is the one, the only, Carouselambra. There is nothing wrong and everything right with that song. Last but not least All My Love. This is a deep song that Robert Plant wrote for his son who died. This album is very underrated. Its very instrumental and it shows John Paul Jones’ talent on the synthesizer. If you one of those people who agree with me good for you. If you one of those people that disagree than I hope this changes your mind.

ledzep go out much the same way they came in, the skimmest possibility of achieving something great, once even touching on metal, instead they dissipated from the world leaving only one good song in immigrant, carouselambra and all my love are the best on this

Kinda think ITTOD is underrated overall--South Bound Suarez is okay, I'm Gonna Crawl not as great as Tea for One, their last great slow blues--but all other tracks are pretty great. Leaves Hot Dog as the weak track. And if they had switched that out for, say, Wearing and Tearing (off Coda)? Bet this would be really elevated in a lot of people's minds...
