2.5 average | luvdrama | April 4th 12 | Following benefit concerts in the mid-eighties featuring most past Doobie Brothers members, the band reformed for the 1989 "Cycles" album, featuring the popular line-up of the "Toulouse Street" and "The Captain and Me" albums of the early 70's. Unfortunately, that promising start is as far as the band got to reigniting the energy and creativity of the gloried past. Cycles failed to deliver on all cylinders. While it sparked a minor radio hit with "The Doctor", the end result was a far cry from the band's finest albums of the early 70's. Gone was Ted Templeman leading the production. Furthermore, Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons turned over too much song writing and vocal contributions to other collaborators. The result was an inconsistent and lackluster effort, that at times sounded more like the Michael McDonald era, yet lacked McDonald's flair and soul.
