In Love and Death was actually quite the disappointment. I remember the first time I popped this album in my stereo; I couldn't believe that it had come so highly recommended. The vocal work, in particular, is atrocious. The inane, cliched lyrics and bland instrumentation doesn't help, either. In Love and Death isn't even catchy, or remotely enjoyable to listen to. That's a sure-fire sign of a failed album in the pop-punk world.

Looking back at it, In Love and Death is a bit rough around the musical edges. Some may be put off by just how cliched the lyrics are, overlapping with the energetic delivery of frontman Bert McCracken's nasally vocal range. But back in 2004, there were people - mostly suicidal maniacs and Hot Topic customers - who wouldn't shut up about this The Used record. Their second full-length recording is pretty damn likeable for what it is, I'll say that much.

Unless your your between the ages of 13 and 15 and are missing a Y chromosome, this album is not for you. The better songs are mediocore and the rest is just lame. Listen to their first cd instead.

Until "Vulnerable", I considered this album to be The Used's most single-heavy album. Now I'm not so sure, but I'm still sure about one thing: this album has no filler. Every song is catchy, every song is different and they all feel like they belong. Great sophomore.

This is generally a bias rating but i don't hate the used; thier first album was amazing, i just feel more and more negative about them with every release as i feel like as the years go by they seem to be getting worse and worse, with nothing getting anywhere near the quality of their debut. However if i were to look at the releases objectively, like i generally do, they wouldn't be half as bad, possibly a 2 at the worst, yet i find myself unable to do so and as a result my objectivity rating is lower than it would be. REMEMBER: this is just my warped opinion and it is something you should ignore.

After two releases, any potential this band had at stepping slightly outside their mainstream emo/pop-punk boundaries has all but died. Seemingly incapable of releasing anything other than an average record, The Used are another example of wasted talent in an over saturated market.

this is my 5th review and i will review in love and death of the used now of there first debut album (maybe memories) this much more of a poppy sounding album but none the less to me still comes out with there old post-hardcore self with tracks like "sound effects and over dramatics" and "I'm a fake" but then there are the more poppy tracks like "all that i've got" and "cut up angels" but are none the less good songs even though not the whole fan base will agree then there are pop mixed with there hardcorish self in songs such as "take it away" and "listening" are mixed with there new poppy direction but also still taking it in the old post-hardcore direction then there are just in the middle tracks such as "i caught fire" and "light with a sharpend edge" and then there is the never ending catchy songs "lunacy fringe" and "under pressure" this is a good album i reccomend it but if you like the used you should probably get lies for the liars

Despite the fact that it can be considered "Emo", In Love and Death is deep in it's punk roots. It is actually Emo, in my opinion, Emo was really bands like Fugazi......not Cute is What We Aim For or My Chem. Some of the lyrics are almost childish, but all through the album; the hooks, programming, and structures will allow you to fall in love with this album.

Have you ever stopped liking a band simply because you don't agree with what they represent? That's how I am with The Used. They really let their fame go to their head with this album. They are from the same town that I'm from (Orem, Ut) and now they just disrespect Utah every chance they get. If I was to hit it big with music or whatever else, even if I hated Utah I would still give my props to it just because that's where I grew up. Plus, the music on here is plain, below average, and just annoying. Brandon Steineckert is one of my favorite drummers and I'm glad he was able to get out of that band.

The Used came out of the gate with a decent start, however decent is not a work I can associate with this poor effort. The album, with very little lyrical content of any substance, fails to hit what The Used gained popularity for. Which were aggressive musicianship over the singers vocal range, however this album just becomes a copy of what they use to be. Not looking forward to their next work, and I’m not sure why anyone would be.

Everything about this album is mediocre. A friend, whose taste in music I respect, recommended this to me. After listening, I asked him if he wasn't a 13-year-old girl underneath that mop of hair.

I totally agree Dan, this was the biggest disappointment for me, they lost their raw sound. Now its all lovey dovey songs. The Used's next album better be like their self-titled album because there's no future with their new sound.
