Underoath have single-handedly given hope to a genre ripe with rip-offs, carbon copies, and flavor of the week musical acts. "Define the Great Line" further establishes Underoath as one of the most important and influential bands in metalcore music today.

Define the Line is a superb album on all levels. Lyrically, instrumentally, and vocally it
destroys everything else Underoath had previously released. From the technicality in the
main riff of "In Regards to Myself" to the slow yet suspenseful build up to "Casting Such a
Thin Shadow," Define the Great Line provides something too look forward to and appreciate
after listening to the album. Alongside the obvious talent of Underoath's drummer/vocalist
Aaron Gillespie, Spencer Chamberlain's new found variation in singing and screaming styles
provide a true gem in vocal performances.

Atmospheric, deep-seeded, meaningful, and heavy are all words that describe this masterpiece. If metalcore could be compared to movements in art, Define the Great Line would be a vital part of the impressionist movement. There is not an emotional excess, but instead a theme of suggestiveness. It suggests change as a result of personal demise. It suggests anger in response to indifference. From Spencer's ridiculous opening of the record to Gillepsie's exceptional singing and drumming throughout, Define the Great Line cannot be missed.

This is one of the better underOATH albums, although a bit more singing from Aaron Gillespie would have been better. Don't get me wrong, this is still a heaps good album. It has a much darker approach compared to TOCS. I cannot compare which of the two I like better because they are both great.
I am looking forward to hearing Lost In The Sound Of Separation soon. :P

An album of amazing technicality and songwriting shows why Underoath are the most impressive band in Metalcore today. After the average release of TOCS,to be able to back up with this basically perfect album re-establishes why Underoath are one of the greatest metalcore acts in this decade.

So nobody expected this: an album by a slightly above average post-hardcore band that automatically sent them to the top of their genre. On TOCS , Aaron wrote about 90% of the lyrics and sang about about 50% of the vocals, I guess they decided Spencer needed more recognition since he was the lead vocalist; so they let him write about 80% of the lyrics and do about 75% of the vocals. That is probably the single most important thing Underoath has ever done. With Spencer playing a bigger role, the band was sure to change directions and they did. Spencer has gone through far many problems than Aaron has (abuse, substance abuse, etc.) and that clearly show in the music. So I'm guessing that with the more mature lyrics and vocals, the instrumentation needed change too. And that one little change made Underoath one of the most recognizable & respected names in harder music. Define The Great Line is an emotional, complex, melodic, yet brutal masterpiece.

This is one of the albums that could almost warrant a 5... but i refuse to give any album the label of being "perfect" or without flaw, so it can have a 4.5...
This album is really not what you would expect after "They're Only Chasing Safety"... it is much heavier and more atmospheric and epic, much darker and yet more memorable at the same time.
This is one of the best albums you will listen to, I don't care if you're some sort of thrash or death metal fanatic.. you WILL appreciate this!

this is truly one of the greatest bands in the world I've seen a lot of great screamo bands in my day but this band just stands out and shines up among the others this band has been my favorite band since i first listened to them and i was nine years old when i first listened to them and now I'm thirteen anyway first on the album is one of the first songs i heard off the new album "in regards to myself" now them being a so-called christian band which there is hints of Christianity in there but back to the song this is a good song and it made an impact on my life as well as the band did then there is the infamous "you're ever so inviting" with the bands hardcore/metalish side coming out in this song as well as others such as "returning empty handed" and "everyone looks so good from here" these are good songs and then theres when they release there more creative acoustic side with songs such as "casting such a thin shadow" and "to whom it may concern" is where it gets emotional and relaxes you now even though i am a big fan of frontman spencer chamberlain's screaming i will say he does ruin the songs creative flow when he bursts in screaming taking it back into the metal direction but none the less this is a good album i fully reccomend it and there new and older stuff

One of my favorite bands of all time is Refused, who were far from a Christian screamo band. But, when I put this CD in my player for the first time, and "In Regards To Myself" exploded on, I caught a glimpse of those amazing swedes. This is truly a great modern hardcore album and has set a new standard in the genre.

"Define the great line" was not just a defining album for the band, but of the metalcore landscape. the electronic elements hold up really well...and unlike alot of other acts between 2007 to now, they have aged like fine wine. Spencer sounds more comfort zone here and his tag team with Aarron helps to make an album that is as reflective as i is catchy (while it is NOT as catchy as "TAOCS" some of you saying that this is not catchy at all really are getting ahead of yourselves). the only weak points here is the interlude track goes on for a bit too long, and the first of the longer tracks could of been shortened slightly. This is the moment when Underoath cemented their place as one of the GOAT's of not only metalcore, but modern metal

I picked up this album on impulse a couple months to go, before i had not had anything by Underoath and wasn't particularly familiar with them. However this album is totally awesome. It has the great Christian lyrics they have always had, brought to you by Spencer Chamberlain, and DtGL is probably his best performance. The album begins with In Regards To Myself, one of the best songs on the record. It has some killer riffage and great overall energy. I haven't seen them live but I'd guess they would open with this a lot. The album continues and Timothy McTague and James Smith keep putting out sweet riffs that are much discernible from others. Then there is the electronic/ambient interlude, called Salminir, which is awesome and provides a nice sepertion amongst the record. You will eventually find yourself at the monster of Everyone Looks So Good From Here, this is the heaviest song on the album, as has one of the best breakdowns I've ever heard and no clean vox. This is my favorite Underoath song. This song ends right with the beginning of To Whom It May Concern - which is an overall excellent song and good closer. With Define the Great Line, Underoath has created a metalcore masterpiece.

once again, i'll have to thank my brother for this one. he gave me this cd to listen to about a year after he gave me Lostpophets. this album began my transition toward heavier genres like metal and metalcore. this isn't my favorite metal album ever, but it was the first one i listened to and has really played a big role in my musical taste today and has also helped the bond between my brother and i grow throughout the years.

A step above "They're Only Chasing Safety", Underoath died in my book when Dallas parted ways, or whatever the situation was. Heavier than the previous release, they weren't UO anymore. UO was Act of Depression, Cries of the Past, and The Changing of Times. I was privlegded to see them in their prime before the change, and all I can say, is they were insane live, and their first 3 were so much better and darker. Again, a step up from the last, but still a decline from older Underoath, which will always remain a favorite.
