1.5 very poor | Iai EMERITUS | June 27th 06 | Green Day's next album is going to be very interesting. They basically have two options. The first is to return to what they're good at, which is mindless, adolescent pop music with loud guitars. The second is to continue in the corner they've backed themselves into and try to deliver another 'political' record, and find themselves an anachronism in a world that's fast getting sick of shallow, hollow anti-Bush sentiments with no real message behind them. The former will make them more money, but it'll reveal American Idiot for the sham of an album it was. The latter will kill off their career, because that bandwagon got old about 18 months ago. So what is it, guys? Pride or money?

3.5 great | Steerpike | June 30th 06 | Green Day are getting a lot of flack lately. Terms like "sellouts" and "bandwagon jumpers" are being tossed around more than condoms at a coed frat party. All because of American Idiot. Though hardly their best album, it is still entertaining, and the concept isn't nearly as political as people seem to believe it is. American Idiot is a hook-filled, catchy, sing-along pop-punk album with a slightly different approach to songwriting than on the band's previous albums, as well as the same sort of snide social commentary they've built their whole careers on. Take it for what it is: a good album that's been unnecessarily demonized because of the oversaturation on the radio.

4.0 excellent | Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | September 26th 06 | With American Idiot, Green Day have added their name to a very short list of pop artists who've had the balls to attempt, and actually succeed, in writing a genuinely engaging concept record- and the music isn't bad either.
The story of St. Jimmy isn't particularly elaborate or original- and is confusingly cut up by thinly veiled political taunts- but its simplicity is part of its charm. Mostly, Green Day play up to the typical suburbanite underclass- troubled pot-smoking teens with eyeliner- but the music is pure pop from a punk perspective.
'American Idiot' and 'Holiday' may represent the least subtle form of propaganda since Mussolini died, but Billie Joe's keen sense of melody and memorable lyrics could make them highlights of any pop calendar, while the nine-minute (I won't say 'epic') epic (sorry) 'Jesus of Suburbia' offers more of the same in five distinct but wonderfully assembled movements.
Elsewhere, 'Whatsername' and 'St. Jimmy' stand up to anything in the Green Day catalogue- just don't mention the word 'punk.'

0.0 | Knott- EMERITUS | May 15th 10 | This rating is a strange one. I don't listen to American Idiot; I don't even have it on my computer. But when it was released it was arguably the most powerful cultural influence of the year, taking the mainstream to rock (not punk) and invigorating malleable teens to support their political stances. Whatever you think about this album - and I can't claim I know it well enough to dissect it - it's so controversial that it gradually became one of the 21st Century's most relevant albums. That doesn't make it good, but the fact that even its detractors care about it proves that it is at the very least phenomenally relevant. Rock albums should split opinion, inspire some to dance, some to riot and some to revolt, so hats off, Green Day; poppy as this record may be at points, it changed a musical landscape, if only for a short time. Now you just need to realise that repeating this spectacle was never, ever a good idea.

4.0 excellent | Electric City | April 9th 07 | To be quite honest, this album wasn't terrible. I listened to this album when American Idiot was the only single, and to be honest, I loved the album after that. I got sick of Boulevard like the rest of you, but for the love of God, the unwarranted flack this album carries along with it. It's rarely political, there's a loose storyline, but most importantly the songs are good. Letterbomb, Homecoming, Whatsername, and the title track each stand out as very good songs. While it may not be complicated, as it stands, which is an album of punky pop songs, it serves it's purpose perfectly.

3.0 good | Hep Kat | June 30th 06 | There's nothing wrong with American Idiot. Nothing at all. Forget that it's a "rock opera," forget its political aspirations, forget all of its success: at the core, American Idiot is a fun, catchy pop-punk album. With the exception of the lackluster final leg, the entire record is very pleasing. Sure, you've heard "American Idiot," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," and all those other tracks on the radio (constantly), but, for what they are, they're good songs. I really can’t see why anyone would dislike this album, when it’s really quite entertaining.

1.0 awful | Zmev | September 25th 06 | I don't know what went more wrong for this band. The fact that their 3478948 singles were not only widly played on the radio accross the U.S. and everywhere, but that they were no good to begin with. Way over-commercialized (which kinda killed the point) and without much displayed musical talent; Green Day appears to have "grown up" but there sure are a legion of people who would wish them some form of devolution

5.0 classic | barosjn | June 27th 06 | When Dookie exploded into the 90's, Green Day invented pop punk. Afterwards, they were famous for songs like "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" and "Minority", but their later albums never had the success that Dookie brought them... until American Idiot came along. This is an interesting concept album about the political society of America and the story is told well with the pop punk Green Day was so famous for inventing. Sure, this album might have gained six overplayed singles (the title track, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Holiday", "Wake Me Up When September Ends", "Jesus of Suburbia", and "Give Me Novacaine") and the band topped the charts again just because going emo is the current fad, but if you avoid those facts you have a spectacular punk rock concept album for your listening pleasure.

3.0 good | The Jungler | June 23rd 06 | With Idiot Green Day manage to pull three things, they alienate old fans, gain thousands of new ones and make some of the most radio ready pop punk tunes ever. Tracks like Homecoming and Give me Novacaine make up for some of the garbage on the record, but can not salvage the fact that it has one of the lowest replay values of any album. The singles, peppered through out the album recieved so much play that it is now almost impossible for me to listen to it in whole. Plus some songs just suck.

1.0 awful | mrfudgeyhead | April 9th 07 | I dont know why this cd got so much love, personally(now publically) i hate Greenday, they cant play and the singer sucks. The lyrics try to hard to be clever and have deep political meaning, but if i wanted to hear liberal opinion i could watch the daily show with john stewart and laugh at with his jokes. Instead these douchebags are being praised as original and reckless. If you belive that these idiots are original or good at their job then you are an american idiot.

5.0 classic | MissShortcake123 | November 10th 06 | American Idiot is amazing. It was in my CD player the moment it came out and it was still in there six months later. There isn't a bad song on the album, but some songs were ruined by the constant radio play.

2.5 average | Enigmabassist | December 28th 06 | It's funny how as time progessed, ratings for this album went all over the board. i have to admit that when i first heard this album i thought it was excellent. some music will grow on you and when it finally soaks in, you can't listen to anything else but this album is a perfect example of how it can bore you after listening to it after a while. this is different punk from billie's older stuff. this is corny political punk. the music really wasn't anything special. i fault billie the most. mike and tre didn't add too much more to the music but it's too bad that green day will put out another one of these public-embraced albums that true fans cringe at the sight.

0.0 | kolzig33189 | June 27th 06 | Green Day did not invent pop punk as barosjn said. he ought to be banned for saying that cuz that is one of the most ludicrous things ive ever heard. theere are a few good songs but mostly this is a boring, desperate attempt at trying to "grow up" and make a political album which happens to be the "cool" thing right now among pop punk bands.

1.5 very poor | Iluvatar | June 26th 06 | In all honesty, I don't really have many reasons to back up my 1.5 Rating, obviously, every time you have a 1 or 1.5, it means you have a particular distaste for an album, but I honestly can't get past how unoriginal this album sounds. It's like Green Day wanted to pretend they were making musical progress, so they just took a bunch of things they did in the past, took some ideas from better bands, and threw it all together. The thing is, it only really works on Jesus of Surburbia. Yeah, kind of a shitty situation overall.

3.5 great | fisky009 | June 21st 06 | Almost timeless pop punk rockers Green day returned to form after a hiatus with their new and controversial concept album, American Idiot. Green day have set off on a different note to their last previous albums with what they consider a more "mature" sound. Billie Joes' lyrics throughout the album portray this grown up sound as well as story line. The story, a young bored disillusioned suburban boy who leaves his life for an adventure in what seems to be the bright lights of a city. When he arrives he meets various characters and has some enlightening complications. But as the album progresses he finds it not what its cracked up to be and leaves in a torrent of fury. American Idiot is fast, up beat, with a hint of political message (hence the controversy) and could be not what old Green day fans expect. Although the album is worth a shot, buy it, you could be surprised.

2.0 poor | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | April 16th 24 | Being the commercial pop-rock detractor that I am, I also could not help but scoff at the dry sterility of Green Day's most polished pop-punk efforts, which in their tone deaf and bland observational commentary mirror those of the most toothless pop-rock of the day. It's a bland take for a bland album, so take it as the maximum effort I am willing to put out here. Admittedly also, their subsequent output and its multitude of triteness has since made me revisit this album with a mild sense of nostalgia and regret. "Why did I hate you so, when you aren't even the worst?"

1.0 awful | zenhead | May 7th 23 | I already don't like Green Day, mainly due to Billie Joe Armstrong having the most annoying singing voice known to man, but this might be the worst rock/punk (if you can even call it that) album I've ever heard in my whole life.
Bad vocals, terrible lyricism that's extremely cringeworthy (to the point of it being laughable) at a lot of points, boring instrumentals and just generally bland and grating song-writing. Only 13 year-olds and tasteless plebs can say this is a great album with a straight face.
Least punk-like punk band of all time. Should've stayed out of the mainstream since nobody would've cared for them otherwise, since there are hundreds of underground bands as boring and insulting as Green Day that were never noticed because they weren't signed. Wish Green Day was like that.
The fact that this has anything over 2 stars on this website is an insult to the entire music community.

5.0 classic | mygreendayromance182 | March 17th 14 | Green Day is known for American Idiot and Dookie. Some people say they sold out, but whatever, it's their opinion. This album is sort of a "rock opera", it tells the story of a teenager named Jimmy, who is referred to as "Jesus of Suburbia" and also "Saint Jimmy". Saint Jimmy is Jimmy's darker side. JOS is Jimmy's rebellious and 'innocent' side. Both sides battle the troubles of adolesence, and also battle each other. Another character, Whatsername, plays a part in Jimmy's life. American Idiot- Jimmy's view of America Jesus of Suburbia- Introduces Jimmy as JOS, tells of his childhood and begins his journey. Holiday- Tells he is living in the streets and is running away from everything. Also states some of his political views Boulevard of Broken Dreams- JOS is alone and doesn't have anywhere to go, all his happiness from Holiday is gone. Are We The Waiting- He begins to doubt himself and who he is (ex: "the Jesus of Suburbia is a lie") St Jimmy- Saint Jimmy is introduced and the insanity and anger begins. Saint Jimmy is not afraid to kill and is 'bad to the bone' Give Me Novacaine - Saint Jimmy and JOS bond in JOS's mind. They do drugs together and JOS depends on St Jimmy. She's a Rebel - Whatsername is introduced. JOS falls in love with her. Extraordinary Girl- JOS's feelings about Whatsername Letterbomb - JOS and Whatsername break up. This is a letter to JOS from her, taunting him (ex: "Nobody likes you, everyone left you") Wake Me Up When September Ends- JOS is alone again. (on a side note, this song is also about lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong's father's death when Armstrong was 10 years old.) Homecoming- JOS realizes he wants to go home, but he has to get rid of St Jimmy. St Jimmy "kills himself" in JOS's mind. He is alone as life moves on around him. He misses Whatsername. He finally begins his journey home. Whatsername- JOS regrets losing Whatsername and wonders about her. The other songs are not directly in the story, although at some points do refer to it. Green Day was quite unsure whether the album would be successful, for the album was originally crafted when nationalism was high. Green Day went against the grain with American Idiot, but it just happened to come at the right time when American sentiment toward the government was beginning to shift. No album by Green Day was more punk (and risky) than American Idiot, and just because it was insanely popular doesn't mean it wasn't punk or authentic. Green Day made punk mainstream, and that is something no other band has been able to do. And that says something.

4.5 superb | xusurper | July 24th 12 | A rock opera done right; many of these songs are the best of their career. The archetypal plot of the Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy and Whatsername is enigmatic enough to keep the album interesting. Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We The Waiting and September Ends are great ballads, while rockers like Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, and Homecoming show the band's trademark ability to write memorable hits based on 4 power chords or less.

2.5 average | Dead Star | August 8th 06 | I actually thought this record wasn't all that bad as everyone makes it out to be, I maybe even think to myself I rated it a little too low. Green Day have approached a new era in their career and good luck to them, they don't choose the fans they get, so I really see all this Green Day hating as a bit misled. Green Day haven't sold out, if they did, it was on Dookie.
I'd prefer to have money and be recognised worldwide, than to be a nobody.

3.5 great | snowy630 | June 27th 06 | During American Idiots' immediate time in the sun, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. However, with the benefit of hindsight, I can now see that it's not as good as I thought. It's not that there aren't great songs on the cd, because there are, it's just the "social" issues if you will that detract from the records' magic. It feels now that now Green Day has "all of a sudden" become this massive mainstream worldwide phenomenon (not that they weren't before - remember Dookie?!) image conformity, and the tapping into of the emo market has somewhat destroyed some of the love I had for the band (Warning was fantastic). Green Day need a smart move with their next recording, ie. go back to being a fun band.

3.0 good | Jacob6293 | June 27th 06 | This band used to be a chart-topping pop-punk group with poppier, immature songs. Now they're just 'okay' with this recent album. 3.5 great | The Sludge | June 24th 06 | Once you thought that this aging Berkley trio has faded into pop punk history with the experimental Warning album, they are back with a completly "Queer Eyed" makeover on their 7th studio effort in 2005 with American Idiot. Its hard to say what hasn't already been said in 8 reviews, but it has its up and downs. The social politics and pop radio overload can throw even the most hardcore Green Day fan off, but there is alot to be had here. A storyline is relevent to the entire concept album. The title track, St. Jimmy and Holiday keep the same Green Day feel to the song structures while tracks like Give Me Novicane, Wake Me Up When September Ends, and Whatsername give a mellow look at the album. Sure it hasnt covered new ground that hasn't been consistanly been covered before, but its a breath of fresh air to anyone who would give it a fighting chance.

3.0 good | br1an | June 28th 22 | Green Day's seventh studio album and the proud and conceptual one, American Idiot, drives the greater highlight of an anthemic-sounding performance and their brush of political lyrical references and content, especially to two songs, the self-titled one and Holiday. This album is more listenable in an occasion for a political, anthemic, fast-pounding, and great sounding to the pop-punk era but easily, Green Day has released older material that sounds quite beyond and held to the most influential sound, hence that I would recieve the album an automatic 3 out of 5.

0.0 | Nicksput | November 30th 17 | A very good comeback album, and Green Day manages to stay relevant, despite angering some of their previous fanbases. It's their first concept album, has a fairly decent story, and a political track or two (which drew much ire, but it's natural to have a larger interest in politics are you get older), and continues to show Green Day attempting new things like they did on Nimrod and Warning. The songs are mostly still 3 chord riffs, but the changing tempos from track to track make it seem like a totally new sound for the band. Besides the overplayed singles (which are all pretty good), most tracks aren't really all that memorable, but are solid for the most part. Homecoming and Whatshername drag quite a bit, forcing the album to loose momentum towards the end. It's still quite an accomplishment for a band like this successfully make a 9 minute track, but two of them was pushing it. The only other complaint I have is that 2 songs (Holiday and She's a Rebel) are direct ripoffs of Husker Du and Jawbreaker songs, and while both tracks are excellent, the lifted riffs are a little too distracting. Otherwise, this is a pretty good album, but over and under rated. Best songs are Holiday, Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy, Gimme Novacane, Extraordinary Girl and Letterbomb.

3.5 great | Jared Floryan | May 18th 16 | 2004 marked the year when punk rock triad Green Day welcomed a new kind of tension all across a nation that admittedly was an alien. The band's seventh full-length album was their comeback release at the time it was first launched, and it also allowed them to resonate with a younger generation. With its iconic cover artwork and the impact this record created, American Idiot is without exaggeration influential, though also quite overrated. Putting aside everything else, the offering that made Green Day relevant again is entertaining, but not exactly flawless from beginning to end. Containing 13 tracks and lasting 57 minutes long, American Idiot does boast some filler, namely in the form of tracks such as "Give Me Novocaine," "She's a Rebel," and especially "Wake Me Up When September Ends"; the latter song is pretty insufferable. It's an affair that I feel has been praised too highly, although at the end of the time bomb day, Green Day's seventh official recording is at the very least worthwhile. There's a healthy size of energy that the instrumentation provides and the group's attempt at a "punk rock opera" is commendable, and yet I'm tempted to stick with these guys' 90s output more overall. Angel recommends: "Jesus of Suburbia," "Holiday," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Letterbomb," "Homecoming," and "Whatsername".

5.0 classic | alextheantichrist | July 16th 12 | Whether you loved this album or hated it, Green Day was definetly taking a risk knowing that either fans are going to worship the album as one of there greatest records or the possiblity that fans will be completely ashamed of it. Personally, Green Day's American Idiot was worth the risk. Many people say that American Idiot is overrated but oddly enough, it's sort of underrated even if the Album is focused on a mainstream audience. With the album being resurrected onto a broadway musical in 2010-present and winning awards for it, American Idiot Continues to be relevant. The sound of American Idiot is very unique with the influences such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Bob Dylan and Queen. American has inspired other bands to follow the Punk Rock Opera; bands like My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade. American Idiot also features a plot about kids being impacted by the post-9/11 world that we live in and that I find pretty deep. I have to say that there is not a single song on this album that i didn't like. I loved every single song on this record especially the singles that have been presented to the media. Overall, The album does justice and proves to be one of my favorite punk records of all time.

It harbours multiple captivating tracks which vary from short, energetic cuts such as She's A Rebel to 9-minute long epics like Jesus Of Suburbia and Homecoming. 3.5 great | Xenorazr | January 23rd 11 | A classic case of an album that's both underrated and overrated, American Idiot gives us a more elaborate and serious side to Green Day with surprisingly good results. While it might be occasionally pretentious and slump during a couple or so tracks, the overall package is worthwhile and holds up nicely even if setting nostalgia aside. Not an amazing album that will catapult them alongside The Who or Pink Floyd, but certainly far above the bottom-of-the-barrell regard.

4.5 superb | vmcoia91 | July 2nd 10 | I have to thank this album when ever I listen to music. This album turned me on to music. I know it sounds lame, but when I first American Idiot I was in awe. Granted I was 13 at the time, but to this day I still enjoy this album. Especially Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming.

2.0 poor | HankMcCoy22 | June 10th 10 | It's easy to see what's wrong with this album. Green Day are not original in anyway. Their riffs, lyrics and melodies are simply predictable. There is nothing new, original or innovative. It's just commercialised punk - which is kinda contradictory. Listening to this kinda dumbs me down.
Best Tracks: American Idiot, Holiday.

Bump |
0.0 | Lambda | November 11th 09 | I have to applaud Green Day for attempting something different and going for broke with this record. And, at times, American Idiot is fantastic. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Give Me Novocaine," and the 9-minute epic "Jesus of Suburbia" are all excellent tracks. However, "Holiday" is absolutely atrocious, and other duds such as "Are We the Waiting" and "St. Jimmy" do nothing to help the record. I have affection for American Idiot's ambition, and while it isn't perfect- and the wisdom of its political notions is questionable- it got people talking, and that is more than can be said for many albums. 3.7

1.0 awful | Baphomet | October 9th 09 | This utter piece of crap has the biggest identity crisis ever. Is it punk? Is it rock? Is it pop? Let me clarify this for you, Green Day: It's neither. The instrumental work is underwhelming. The lyrics... ugh, they just took advantage of a time when it was trendy to bitch about politics. And not the punk way, noooooo. Green Day thought it would be better to use the "Bono-bitching-method". I really can't stress enough how overrated and crappy this is. And if you know American Idiot isn't a great album, but it holds sentimental value so it will always be your classic album even though you rate 21st Century Breakdown a 5 as well... well, there's something really wrong with you.

Bump |
4.0 excellent | soldier0cross | May 12th 09 | American Idiot was way more popular than anyone probably expected it to be. I'm pretty sure every
member of my immediate family other than myself actually owned a physical copy of the album. And
for a good year or two you could not turn on the radio without hearing any single one of these
songs.
The album itself is very good (which is suprising), the idea in retrospect seems like it would be
a mess, interconnected songs, political centered lyrics and the concept route the album took. It
sounds like it would be a massive mess, however it all worked perfectly, everything about it is
pretty damn good. Really for a band like Green Day to make a record like this seemed like a
total offshoot. But it certainly worked out for them very well. While some songs are less fun
and intense than others. Even when it falters in quality it still stands to be a lot of fun.
Bump |
0.0 | ConorMichaelJoseph | April 16th 09 | Not as awful as some would make it out to be, but not the classic that many others hail it as either. The psuedo-political babbling makes for a fairly interesting listen at first along with some catchy riffs but afterwards it grates.

0.0 | completetest | February 14th 09 | Okay, where do I start with this? First off, these guys are pop. Not punk. Their label told them to start bashing Bush so people would buy their albums. I can't believe anyone bought this. Seriously. This is the worst excuse for music I have ever heard. I'm all for bashing Bush, but not unless you actually mean it! This album is pathetic.

Bump |
5.0 classic | cleary21 | May 27th 08 | The ultimate in pop-punk, American Idiot showcases Green Day at their most intelliegnt and infectious, featuring an intriguing storyline that packs emotional punch and socio-political relevance. Infinitely catchy, yet both original and gleefully derivative, American Idiot promises to be the high point in the career of a band that has already made its mark in the music landscape.

0.0 | Theunbrokenwolf | March 2nd 08 | This band was A good band but definatly not one of the best ever. Green day only had 2 songs that really caught my eye Boulavard of broken dreams and American idiot. Green day is an alright band one of the few i can stand out of this particular style. they show some talent and Show some good lyric ability. Green day when i first heard i had though ok this sucks. but over time it started to seem alright so its an ok album with some good songs and some ok songs.

4.0 excellent | Stalusk | April 9th 07 | I wasn't expecting to like this much after the lacklustre Warning. I really couldn't give a damn about the politics and I can't stand "Holiday". But everything else is great. They aren't brilliant musicians and they're not trying to be. They aren't doing much different now (musically) than what they did with Kerplunk! And "Extraordinary Girl" has to be one of their best ever. It's very easy to slag this band, but it's more courageous to defend them.
Bump |
1.5 very poor | bdizfoshiz | November 10th 06 | I'll give some good reasons why this album ruined my opinion on Green Day and I'll never pick up another Green Day album in my life. This album sold them out completely. Whatever fans they had before this album are most likely gone now. You can't have every song on the album be a single. And when I think of American Idiot and people that acutally like it, I want to throw up, amongst other things that I'm not going to tell about.
Bump |
3.0 good | alexander | September 30th 06 | This album is good because it has lots of good songs and I especially like "American Idiot" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends". 2.0 poor | carney3110 | September 25th 06 | American Idiot is the worst album Green Day has to offer. I'm not into this kind of music anymore, but since Green Day was one of my favorite bands in the '90s, I feel some kind of nagging need to defend them. Yes, the anti-bush political crap is getting old. Yes, the songs are miserable commercial garbage. But don't bitch about them selling out. Because you know what? They did sell out, and their rich as hell for doing it. And you know what else? They're so rich they don't give a damn what people call them.

3.5 great | punk_noodle113 | June 30th 06 | I've been a Green Day fan since I was 5 years old(the Dookie days), and I've always loved their music, American Idiot being no exception. I think it's smart and written and performed well. My problem though is the image the band is now producing. It's nice that they're getting a second wind and another shot at the spotlight, but they're in their thirties, they need to be prancing around in makeup like little emo wimps. If they keep going like this, I'm sad to say this may be the last album I buy from the boys.
Bump |
0.0 | The Nu-Spawn | June 27th 06 | I can see how people would hate American Idiot, people bitch and moan when a pop-punk band like Green Day writing style matures, but if it means more fans, do it, run with it while you're still popular. This is Green Day's time to be in the limelight, they've been a band long enough, they deserve it.
