They’re labeled as grind, but the band have evolved enough that it’s probably kind of a limiting genre tag. I can tell you that this album is full of fucking awesome riffs that pull from metal, punk and death metal. And the vocals. The animalistic, throaty shouts of whoever the fuck sings in this band are what pushes the riffy goodness to another level. Hell yes.

Goddamn is that John Zorn during Everyday Pox? Apart from that, the album rips hard with its approved mixture of grindcore & hardcore, with still a touch of deathgrind. On par, if not slightly above Apex Predator.

After leaving Death Metal aside after the disaster of "Inside the Torn Apart" and "Words from the Exit Wound", Napalm Death returned to bet on a mix of Hardcore Punk with Grindcore. The 2000's were spectacular for the band, with six albums far above average, and this fact was extended to the 2010's. "Utilitarian" emerged in 2012, and is certainly the best and most complete piece of modern Grindcore by the band. The record is huge, intense, violent and rough as it should be, but with a production that stands out in the genre. In addition, it serves as a good introduction to the sound of the band.

Utilitarian is a fast, heavy, relentless listen-- and that's not all. Indeed, there are moments of experimental brilliance here, such as John Zorn's saxophone on "Everyday Pox" (also perhaps my favourite Napalm Death track ever), the choir on "Blank Look About Face", and the epic layering of intro "Circumspect." Of course, there is also the usual heavy riffage and aggression one expects from a Napalm Death release, but that aforementioned experimentation is welcome. Indeed, more of it would make this record even better. Overall, Utilitarian is a good release, despite some songs falling through the cracks.

Boasting sheer chaos, great synchronization, powerful guitar riffs, even greater pacing and well placed instrumentation. Napalm Death have proved that even after 25 years of creating music they are still at the top of their game and constantly improving, even throwing in some new unexpected surprises for the genre itself, like the use of the saxophone.
