Easily one of the greatest albums of all time. Truly deserving of the 'classic' mark. It simply does not deserve anything less then full marks. Anything below is wrong.

Well, yes, it's great. What's properly amazing is how well the record combines atonality with catchiness. It never sounds grating, all the while mixing elements of improvisation (without being free jazz per se), bop shit, cool jazz, Dixieland, blues, and some Ellington nods. It's just, put simply, the catchiest he's ever been on record

This. This my good friend... is Jazz... Jazz at its very best. Where some jazz can be uninspired and noodley, this is fresh with every note. Where other jazz can be lacklustre or overly flash, this is subtle, but that subtlety perfectly frames the indescribably momentous jewels of intensity. As almost anyone would agree... anything, and I mean ANYTHING below an 5 is sheer mockery. 5/5

Mingus Ah Um is full of alive compositions. There is always a lot going on with many instruments at play simultaneously, but they all harmonize so well. Every second is engaging (Edited version atleast, see below). Rightfully has the reputation of a masterpiece. rI listened to both edited and unedited and, i gotta say, i much prefer the edited version. Many unedited tracks tend to drag a little for me, especially within the full album context, while the edited version gives a more compact pleasure.

Amazing. A jack of all trades, one finds weird experimantal atonal features, interesting rhythmical ideas, as well as occasional virtuosic brilliance. Due to the blend, and how well it is balanced, not one second of the album is boring. Love it.

"You checked out Ah Um, right?" I did now...It's brilliant (specially on 2nd spin) tks a lot! Among some well known (familiar) tunes I think Fables Of Faubus match my style and perfectly translates what I dig about Mingus...such a challenging composition and influences way beyond jazz itself!

92/100. Didn't have this one rated for some reason--- an absolute masterpiece and the first album to really get me into jazz. I love the infectious soul of tracks like the opener, as well as the softer melancholic moments like on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (which is a song honoring one of my favorite musicians, Lester Young). Start to finish, Ah Um demands your attention, flexing Mingus' skills as a composer and cementing its legacy in the canon of jazz.

This is absolutely stunning stuff. Charles Mingus assembles an all-star band (just listen to those drum and
sax solos) and writes accessible, technical and beautiful jazz that anyone can enjoy. This is really close to
being a 5 and it probably eventually will be for me.

Mingus Ah Um is essential listening for music lovers. The man was ahead of his time: improvisation and upbeat pieces make this feel almost like a 70's fusion record. You can get where the Big 4 of Fusion (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Headhunters and Weather Report) got their inspiration. You must hear this before you die, period.
