Kim described the sound of this record as "artcore". I can see that, it's relying on tropes Sonic Youth hadn't touched upon since their early SST period. Unlike previous record Dirty - also produced by Butch Vig - this one strips away any commercial ornaments or single-worthy material. Considering this was released on a major label, this is some ballsy move, but it ain't really my cuppa. Hot take: this sounds like Sister's b-sides. Maybe this is the one Sonic Youth record that acts as a pleb filter, separating sad virgins like me and alpha boiz'n'gals like the people saying this is the best Geffen Sonic Youth.

Not a bad song on here, but almost every one has an unfinished feeling. There?s very little flow to it as well in my
opinion. It plays more as a collection of songs than an album. If you told me this was a demo session for another
album, I?d believe you. Far stronger second half than first.

Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star turns towards the mellow, vulnerable side of the band too rarely, instead relying on typical Sonic Youth up-beat sound, only with less distortion this time. It's a strong release, no doubts about that, but tracks such as the opener, "Skink" or the closer indicate it could be so much stronger.

A big bag of clips, bits, pieces of ideas, guitar skuzz, and assumed first takes into Whateversville - which makes for a fun but incomplete-feeling listen. Nothing here really feels fully-formed, but it is at least comfortable in that sense.

One of the underrated SY albums. Sometimes I feel like SY fans need to have an album they can destroy just to make the point they are fans but still can rate properly. Most of the time it will be this one or NYC Ghosts and Flowers that will be broken. Nevermind if I sound like a fanboy, there is no bad SY album (maybe among the EP though). There are bad songs, several on this album, all right. Experimental Jet set... is an album on which you feel SY had plenty of ideas, and they didn't want to end up lenghthy, how many songs starts right off with the voice here? A lot of creativity here, great lyrics, voice, and still the famous dual guitars that seems to play random melodies taken separately, and together form beatiful harmonies. Favorite tracks: Bull in the Heather, Self Obsessed & Sexxee and Tokyo Eye.

Classic in the sense that each listen yields new insights into the noises and voices which nonchalantly destroy your ear drums. Plus Kim is awesome on this album; oh and probably the best tracking of any Sonic Youth release. Screaming Skull catches you off guard where it hurts and you can't help fist pumping in between the songs that get you ready for the more melodious segments. Awesome all the way through.

This Album is by far the most underrated sonic youth album,in my opinion. Half of the album is TIMELESS,another 1/4 is amazing as well but not quite as good as the first. and the last quarter is kinda filler, but not realy. let me explain. Ok so when i was twelve, i heard alot about this band, so i went to my local record store and bought this album. they had no other ones and i was dying to hear what SY had to offer. so i popped it in my CD player and listend to it...I FUCKING HATED IT. every song(exept screaming scull) i fucking HATED. i thought it was disgraceful. but it was the last of my christmas money i had spent on this, so i was NOT going to have it go to waste...after a week i was obsessed with every song(besides skink) it was AMAZING. it totally opened my mind to what music was and how it could be manipulated. my favorite tracks would have to be "tokyo eye", "Androgonis Mind" , and "Self obsessed and sexee" but all of them are amazing exept afew. it has a feeling no other sonic youth album has. it has a nostalgic feel to it almost...but that could just be me. 1-DAYDREAM NATION.2-DIRTY.3EXPERIMENTAL JET SET TRASH NO STAR!
