Easily this band's best album. They've gone in a completely different direction than their previous albums. No more symphonics or metalcore influences, this is just pure atmospheric/ambient black metal in the vein of Ash Borer or Wolves in the Throne Room. Very surprising to say the least.rDon't know how you can't see the Wolves in the Throne room comparisons. As for the Ash Borer thing, maybe it's just me.

Not too sure where the Wittr comparisons are coming from, as this really sounds nothing like any of the 'cascadian' bands. I get the feeling that this is a "me too" album, like they saw what most of the acclaimed bands were doing and said hey we can do that too. It's 10 year old motifs rerecorded.rThat being said it's not a bad album at all, quite a bit better than their previous material. It truly is just an average album. Infinite Fields is the best track.

Hey, I have an idea: Let's make atmospheric black metal without atmosphere!
Edit: This sounds very little like Wolves in the Throne Room and absolutely nothing like Ash
Borer, in case you were wondering.

Becoming has all the superficial qualities of a black metal record: fuzzy production, wailed vocals, and long songs full of tremolo picking. It even has some great passages, and nice touches. However, the indeterminate atmosphere and lack of emotional urgency casts the entire affair in a disingenuous shadow, as if the band listened to a bunch of black metal records and then made their own without really grasping what the genre is all about.

A very solid atmospheric black metal album that captured my attention throughout its duration. Not among the best in its genre, but still a nice nod to bands such as Wolves In The Throne Room and Agalloch. Definitely worth checking out.

AW rips off Wolves In The Throne Room in the most blatant form imaginable. If anyone thinks they're changing their sound and god forbid black metal in general, I'd call them an idiot and invite them to listen to every other WITTR album ever. And if you have no idea where the WITTR comparisons are coming from, you really are an idiot. What makes it blatant is really track #4, where it begins with sounds of a waterfall or a stream. What would a New York-based band from Boston insert a sound like that at the beginning of a song called Infinite Fields of Mind? Oh yeah, because WITTR would do the same. In addition, AW started out as an energetically sinister symphonic black metal band with somewhat raw production, and now all of a sudden, they're making 10 minute slowly paced songs with a muffled master? This is ripping off a band in the most blatant form, and mainstream metal fans are eating this shit up like the infantile shits they are. Listen to WITTR's new album and see what I mean.
P.S. To DarkNoctus, WITTR didn't change their sound. Trying a couple new things doesn't make it a new sound.

this rules hard, wtf just happened to this band. yeah, it's WitTR worship, but given that this is probably better than CL and that WitTR have hinted at abandoning black metal for good, i think we can make an allowance.
