Overrated. It's well-performed, yes, and Ihsahn's vocals are replete with bile-spitting hatred, but the songs themselves bore me, apart from a riff here or there ("Beyond the Great Vast Forest").

rHochgeladen am 22.07.2010rIn 1959 Chip Ihsahn and Rocky Samoth met on the beach in California. They shared a love of crude reverb units, surfing, smoking illicit substances and driving cars with fake wood on the sides. The soon formed a surf band which had a variety of name changes including The Dark Devices, then The Xerasias, then The Embryonics. The group soon evolved into the now well-known band The Thou Shalt Suffers. Soon, however,Rocky Samoth began to write surf music music outside of The Thou Shalt Suffers, and together with Chip Ihsahn and a new bass player called Woody Mortiis (later of his own eponymous band The Mortiises), The Emperors was formed.

For the album cover alone, it should be obvious that orcs aren?t too friendly if you burn and shit their forests. They have their revenge and this album is their favorite album. Perhaps the most majestic black metal ever made and an absolute standard. It?s like ABBA with a twist.

This is my first taste of symphonic black metal, and it's pretty solid. Contrary to the last two bm records I listened to, the drumming actually caught my attention more than anything; this guy doesn't mess around. Vocals aren't too bad either, and the symphonic elements are used tastefully. Biggest gripe was a perceived lack of variety. Rating: Low 3.5. Favorite track: I Am the Black Wizards

If you took all the best riffs and melodies out of any other melo-black classic like, let's say, The Somberlain, you would get one track off this album. No band nailed the freezing atmosphere and "majesty" of black metal as well as Emperor on this album and the opening riffs to "Into the Infinity of Thoughts" or "I am The Black Wizards" alone are worth more than some bands' entire discographies. Essential listening for anyone with at least a passing interest in extreme metal.

Everything about this album is absolute light years ahead of most black metal out there. the guitar work is intense, the drumming crazy, the symphonies in the background are beautiful and even the production is a lot crisper than that of most "lets sound as much like a human being raped by an ogre as we can" black metal

I absolutely love it. As black metal it can hardly be beat, be what differed it as a five for me is that the aggression in black metal that i like so much seems to be replaced by synthesizers and melancholy guitar work. But this can be very refreshing in most cases, and I respect this much so. The only problem is that the whole album seem to have little variation from the same melancholy stuff, but this hardly replaces the love I have for this cd. It is good atmospheric music, so playing Chrono Trigger or other rpgs would kick some serious butt. This I suggest for larping to the third degree, with sticks and pain.

It's easy to see why In the Nightside Eclipse has been referred to as Emperor's magnum opus. The album is dark with low but fitting production that only adds to the melodic yet morbid atmosphere. Each song is very similar in sound and nature, yet the variety is more than present enough to keep things interesting from start to finish. In essence, this is the epitome of not just black metal, but any metal album quality.

This is an astonishing Black Metal album with so many layers of darkness. The album is so deep, you can get lost in the amazing imagery that is conjured. It remains brutal, atmospheric, fast and frantic at the same time. It is a must have for those who are into Black Metal or are looking to explore the genre. 5/5.

Emperor's second full length album, In the Nightside Eclipse is nothing short of a true black metal classic. In short, the album is black metal the way it was meant to be. The guitar lines are fast, and despite the low production value, manage to escape sounding thin. The drumming is fast and accurate throughout, adding the perfect backing for the vocals and guitars. Ihsahn does a great job vocally. His voice is high pitched and his shreiks are just what Emperor needs. The overall mood of the album is dark (obviously), but it is not created with the use of synths and keyboards, but rather by a band getting together and writing some great music. Definitely a must for any fan of black metal or Emperor, and worth a listen for any metal fan in general.
