Going from working with one guy named Billy to another, the debut solo album, Life Begins
Again
, from Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin's solo band The Jimmy Chamberlin
Complex showcases Chamberlin's drumming talents in jazz composition style rather than the
forceful hard rock percussion of SP that he is most known for. Although Chamberlin does the
majority of the writing on Life Begins Again himself, he requires the assistance of
multi-instrumentalist Billy Mohler and the aid of many featured guests - Billy Corgan being
among them - to perform complete songs on the album, due to being in the position of a
drummer. The placement of a drummer is anything but the front of the band and the music, and
a concern from listener's may be Chamberlin's drumming being overwhelmed and drowned out on
his own solo album by the aspects of the music that aren't performed by him, but Life
Begins Again
does a surprisingly good job of displaying Chamberlin's drumming talents
without it dominating the rest of the music. Everything on this jazz fusion record
cooperatively works together better than one would expect, and while it's apparent that
Chamberlin hasn't completely shaken off his instinct to primarily write Smashing Pumpkins-
sounding songs in exchange for something completely new and original for his solo work,
Life Begins Again shows a great extent of Chamberlin's personal ambitions fully
realized.

Jimmy Chamberlin is one of the most complex drummers in all of alternative music, and with the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, he gets to take control over his music. In normal, formulaic music, the vocals and the guitars lead the music, but with this perplexing jazz fusion album, Chamberlin's drums take the lead. The music is very progressive, and from time to time you can even hear some Death Growls, but along the way we hear some nice, relaxing jazz. Overall this record is very lush and unique, and Jimmy's drumming is some of the best he's done, inspired, complex, and speedy. This album is for anyone who likes the sound of the drums over the sound of speedy solos, and anyone who likes some progressive elements in their jazz.
