Basically, if Amnesiac were more monotonous and had less personality, there'd be The Eraser. The idea of Thom using fragmented old samples of his bandmates sounds interesting at first, but the charm wears off. The result is a of bunch cold, clammy songs with a less charismatic than usual Yorke singing over fidgety, creaky loops of what sound like old tapes that have been laying around in Radiohead's studio. The mix of what Yorke chooses to sample is what makes the album pleasant enough to sit through, but not to be engaged completely. Also, is it just me, or has his lyrics become predictable? Maybe Thom and I have just been together for too long.

I've never really been crazy about the stuff Thom's been doing recently on The King of Limbs and Amok so I went into this pretty sceptical, but I was actually pretty impressed, and it's safe to say I enjoy this more than either Radiohead or Atoms for Peace's most recent albums.

While this project has some songs that don't really convince in the first half of the tracklisting, it shines in the second half. In my opinion "Skip Divided", "Cymbal Rush" and especially "Atoms for Peace" are amazing. Not a bad debut.

don't get me wrong........the idea of this record sounds great. but its not exciting. thom yorke sounds like he recorded the vocal tracks when he didn't have anything better to do. some songs are very good and the rest are kind of bland. the music is not wildly electronic as its made out to be. its just a bunch of guitar and piano loops played over a drum machine most of the time.

Everyone bitches about this CD and how it's no Radiohead, but isn't that the whole point of a solo album? Yeah, okay, it's certainly not a proper follow up to Hail to the Thief, but it's still a damn good album.

Some great songs on here but quite a few duds, like 'Skip Divided' and 'Cymbal Rush', songs like 'The Eraser', 'Analyse', 'Black Swan' and 'Harrowdown Hill' are great, but as an album, all the songs are a bit samey, some songs you'll want to listen to singularly but not a brilliant album from Mr. Yorke.

Thom Yorke didn't dissapoint with this solo album. It has a lot of electronic beats and all that stuff because this album is truly a solo album, he wrote everything by himself with a little help from Jonny Greenwood. The only problem I have with this album is that it only has 9 tracks, but everything else is amazing, from the cover of the album to the music, everything is excellent.

Pure synthethic sounds from Thom's basement. Sounds like thom stayed for months in his studio perfectioning the sound more than the content, its partialy boring , not impressioning but still gets you deep in its ambient. Almost all the songs are straight.
It is a complete album for idioteque but modernized.

The Eraser is, simultaneously, equal parts mechanized and human and equal parts unnerving and soothing, and Thom has never been any of these to greater effect than on this record. Tracks tend to consist of muddy keyboards and crisp beats that pip and pop, but it's how they are combined that really affect the ear, such as the rich exoticism produced by simple melodic twists in "Analyse". Thom's voice is relatively laid back in delivery, and the more sparse instrumentation of The Eraser allows him to show off his multi-faceted vocal abilities, alternating between beautiful falsetto ("Atoms for Peace"), lower-register musings ("Skip Divided"), and everything in between. Only so often does he revisit the typical caterwauling of his work with Radiohead, choosing to explore new territory in all aspects of the music.

If Kid A were released after this, I would say Kid A was The Eraser on steroids, but since it's vice versa, I'll have to say The Eraser is Kid A on the ATkins diet. It's actually a pretty damn good album, just nothing compared to Kid A, and the comparisons between Yorke's solo work and the brilliance of what he has done in Radiohead. Black Swan for me makes the album though, it's one song I could see as being on Kid A or Hail to the Thief. Seeing as Yorke supposedly did this in a month, this just makes me so much more excited for the new Radiohead album in 2007. Just think what they can do with that kind of time.

Yorke gives his solo album a very skillful touch of electronic music while still allowing his classic instrumentation to show through. A very tasteful and pleasant album, which is something that can be rare these days, but there isn't anything groundbreakingly new in this album. That would be my only complaint.

With a type of Kid A and Hail to the Thief feel, but more sweet and sour, he incorperates textures and volume into this album making it seem a lot more sophisticated than O.K., Computer but just the same direction -- different. If he had made something that sounds just like Radiohead, it wouldn't really be solo, just a cover, per se. But he made his experiance as a DJ very clear and his vocal talents also very clear. As his experimentation shows, electronica can be a lot more than techno *cough* repeatitive! *cough*.
This album deserves more credit than a lot of people are giving it, with its experimentation, it stands out in the music field where Rap is dying, and punk/emo is an uprising. Bravo... better yet, encore!
