| 4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | September 8th 17 | For an album called Antipop, there are more than a few catchy moments on this thing. Of course, Primus have never been a band to shy away from irony. This is another record that is seen as well below their better work, but, like Brown Album before it, it's misunderstood. It's an improvement on the more streamlined style of its predecessor, with plenty of the quirkiness that so defined Primus before, just with a songwriting style geared more towards groove and infectiousness than weird time signatures and angular riffing. The bass sounds fantastic as always, and the list of successful collaborations the band did with the likes of Tom Waits, Tom Morello, James Hatfield, and Jim Martin on this album is pretty swell. It's not quite as good as Frizzle Fry or Tales From The Punchbowl, but it's definitely an under-appreciated album from the three geeks.

| 2.5 average | Robbit | December 15th 16 | I loved most of Primus' albums up to this point, but they started to lose me a bit with ANTIPOP. The songs are just a little too over the place and aren't as solid and interesting as their prior work. "Mama Didn't Raise No Fool" is reminiscent of the old Primus formula, but the rest of the album is either too aggressive or experimental for my taste. It's hard to accuse Primus of every making a truly bad album since their playing is always solid and amazing. I just don't love these songs.

| 3.5 great | Jared Floryan | May 27th 15 | Arguably the most aggressive studio album in Primus' discography, Antipop does sound rather disjointed, albeit in very few places. This one statement comes halfway circle when you take into account the multiple producers on board (especially South Park co-creator Matt Stone and ex-chocolate starfish Fred Durst), as well as the three bandmates not being on the greatest of terms back then. Though it has its shortcomings, Primus' sixth full-length recording is far from a total disaster. The group continues to be instrumentally entertaining and their traditional elements collide with a more heavier sound in order to allow for quite amusing results; "Electric Uncle Sam," "Natural Joe," and "Power Mad" aren't anything short of splendid in this regard. Antipop may suddenly hit you like a ton of bricks once you get to the final two songs.

| 4.0 excellent | CrazyFool84 | January 27th 13 | Les Claypool was the among the first to proclaim that the band felt like it was running out of creative steam, after running the gauntlet of influences and mashing them all together on sixth (including this one) studio offerings. What more could a band as offbeat and far-reaching as Primus really do, aside from continuing to release what would seem like the same record over and over again? This quandary seemed a major cause in the group?s self-imposed hiatus that followed shortly after the release/promotion of this album, as the musicians themselves just felt out of ideas. While some would argue that they clearly hear this lack of new ideas or freshness on 1999s Antipop, multiple listens reveal a disc quite on par with some of Primus? finest. The first impression the album can give is one of a worn out band in desperate need of a break; further listen should reveal musicians still on the top of their game, and still miles ahead of their peers.

| 0.0 | bastard | January 1st 09 | sadly the only Primus album that legitmately sucks as an album. Everyone in the band sounds like they're going through the motions and even Les Claypool just isn't up to his usual standard. Everything is so... boring.
