I had to re-rate this. To be honest, I never really got into this album, but today the realization just hit me: this is actually brilliant! These riffs are fire, the atmosphere is evil, and it is Satyricon! Especially good stuff when the synths kick in.

You can really feel Snorre's influence on Satyricon's new style, with all of his weirdness injected into their riffs. But while Thorns was a great band, Snorre's influence gets muddled in Satyricon's attempt to mix that weirdness with a more minimalistic black 'n' roll, creating a sometimes-grooving, totally uninteresting record. Which is hard to imagine, given how stylistically unique "Rebel Extravaganza" actually sounds. It's a fresh sound, sure, but at the same time it's so uninteresting so as to sound stale. Just split the difference and listen to latter-era Darkthrone and Thorns separately instead of this haphazard mishmash of the two.

This album is incredibly overrated. Now, as a satyricon fan, i can understand why satyricon did what they did with this album, but it all sounds horribly wrong to start with. The guitars are all over the place (not in a good way either), and satyr's vocals have gone awry, not even linking in with the overall atmosphere of the remaining instruments. At least 'Volcano' isn't half as bad.

This is not pure old school black metal but its still an interesting album for the fan of dark music. With this album Satyricon is including more progressive elements into their music (aka Enslaved later work)
-High quality musicianship
-Nice use of musical layers
-Excellent vocals (for the genre)
-Creativity and diversity are present
-Good production (for the genre)
-Bass is audible
I dont prefer or value a subgenre over an other.If the music is good, thats what is important for me and i found this album to be very good.
