Odessey & Oracle was about as doomed as it's possible for a record to be. The band had already been dropped and split up by the time it was released, and it bombed on release. There's even a spelling mistake in the title. But somehow, it came back - two years after its release, "Time Of The Season" became the biggest hit The Zombies had ever had. And thus, people discovered that, somehow, they'd almost let a masterpiece slip through their hands. Odessey & Oracle's not-so-secret weapon comes from its tunes - each and every one a corker. Never has there been a record this melodic - no, not even Revolver, nor Pet Sounds. If ever you need to prove to somehow just what a magical time the 60s were for music, then know: one listen to this will convince anyone.

perfect psych pop album, possibly even sweeter and more devastatingly consistent than Forever Changes and even any full length Beatles record. An absolute gem of the 60's without a doubt. Oozing with charisma, witty storytelling, rich pop structures and gloriously epic melodies, it's impossible to not adore on some level. Even in it's simplicity and soft touch it stands high as, in my opinion, the best of it's kind, ever.

Its better than most Beatles album, including Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hears and even the White Album. But even if i compare them to The Beatles, they certainly have their own sound and this album is proof, there's no miss on this album , and its just so fun to listen too4,3/5

The closest a pop album can come to perfection. Finely-crafted hooks and melodies, excellent harmonizing, interesting lyrical ideas (a pop song about the horrors of war? a pop song reversing the gender roles in a story about one's baby getting out of jail?), and top-notch musicianship all around. Eat your heart out Paul McCartney.

'Odessey and Oracle' is a classic 60's album full of catchy songs, beautiful harmonies, and some of the best music of the period. While some tracks are more memorable than others, it's certainly worth a listen.

This album sure did surprise me! I had heard Time of the Season which was a very good song but I was not so sure that this album would be as good as it is but no, it perfectly captures the greatness of the 60s and it is one of the best albums of 1968 right up there with other classics like Electric ladyland and the White Album. This is great stuff!

The best album of all time in my mind. I was absolutely stunned when I heard it the first time. "Care of Cell 44" drew me in, instantly, and the second "Time of the Season" was over, I just wanted to listen to it again. The album is ripe with gorgeous melodies, catchy pop songs and beautiful ballads. Even the album's ugliest moment, the dramatic "Butcher's Tale", is an utterly spectacular and moving song. Odessey and Oracle is the very definition of a classic. I recommend it to anyone with ears.
