While the album is good, I don't get the "greatest album ever" or even "best Stones album" vibe from it. It is consistent, it's rocking, but there's nothing that really pulls it apart from their average work. "Shake Your Hips", "Tumbling Dice", "Torn and Frayed", "Let it Loose", "All Down the Line" and so on are great songs. But there's a little too much filler and so-so material packed in here for it too be a really remarkable album.

The Stones had a year prior released the best album of their career, up until that point, cause then came along a certain Exile on Main St. the album I consider the greatest album ever recorded.rTo put it simply it did everything right that Sticky Fingers did, and then gave us Rocks Off AND All Down the Line. Pure, filthy, unadulterated hard/blues rock.

This is going to be one hellish album review. How do you review such an epic masterpiece? I shall indubitably try my best. This is THE Stones' record. Nothing they ever put has been such well-crafted and fully lived-in. It's grimy, dirty, perverse, dark, intense, lovely. It rocks so ***ing hard. "Rocks Off" is such an intense and self-deprecating album opener. Love it. "Rip This Joint" is so powerful and moving; it grooves so well. "Shake Your Hips" is better than anything ZZ Top ever put out, hands down. Excellent. White blues personified. "Casino Boogie" is intense and completely satisfying. Another great song. "Tumbling Dice" is heart-wrenching and beautifully so. "Sweet Virginia" is quaint; lovely. Great advice found within. "Torn and Frayed" is simmering with intelligence and hidden beauty. Exceptional. "Sweet Black Angel" is dark. Hypnotic. "Loving Cup" requires many re-listenings but is innately beautiful. Transcending. "Happy" is Richards' song. "Turd on the Run" rocks. Excellent. "Ventilator Blues" is ***ing brutal; I love it. One of the best on this pseudo-greatest hits album. "I Just Want to See His Face" is a perfect followup to "Ventilator Blues"; its choral elements make me want to stand up and shout. Amazing. "Let It Loose" is completely lived-in; stellar. "All Down The Line" is bluesy and intense. One of the best songs on this album. "Stop Breaking Down" follows its predecessor's energy expertly; such a reverential cover. As lovely as "Love In Vain" from "Let It Bleed". "Shine A Light" is hypnotic and has such an intense and commanding presence. "Soul Survivor" meticulously closes out this epic of an album. One of the most energetic infusions of blues, country, soul, gospel and rock I've ever laid my ears onto. Certainly the Stones at their absolute peak. However, I will say that while it's not as tightly focused as "Let It Bleed", it's eclectic and beautifully so. Colossal. A+

I don't know what it is about this album that makes me like it less than the Stone's previous three gems. Maybe it's the double-LP's length (just over an hour), maybe it's its inconsistency, maybe it's hearing the same old timey country blues and rock 'n' roll again with less luster. Don't get me wrong, some tracks here are very good. But some of them aren't; songs like "Rip This Joint" and "Shake Your Hips" and "Turd on the Run" are built on a riff and a roll and don't go anywhere, and "Tumbling Dice" and "Happy" are upbeat but lack the energy to make me get up and move. In all the album is laid-back and warm without the novelty or excitement of Beggars' Banquet, nor the levity or irony of Let It Bleed, nor the gravity or zazz of Sticky Fingers. But it's still a good album; there is a time and place for every "good" album, and for me it's while taking long drives on those lazy, hot midsummer afternoons. I just can't feel the vibes most other times.

Exile on Main St. makes me think of Pearl Jam's No Code; it really wouldn't surprise me if one inspired the other. The covers are similar, as is the concept of meshing together many different ideas. It might not appeal to everyone, but it's a great album all the same.

This very well could be the Stones at their best - its loose, sprawling nature plays a definite contributing role there, but that is just a bonus to how well it covers all the bases while still throwing you some curveballs. Many tracks give the impression of cock-rock/punk predecessor anthems for ruckus, gambling and sex, only to have just as many be the most touching and effective songs of their career. Others find nice niches as being welcome little oddballs that are still a far throw from being throwaway - and it's all done with so much raw, soulful, old-timey-drunken energy; it can only be recognized as pure, unadulterated rock n' roll.

What's best out of rock and roll. Beatles may have been more diverse and clever, but never went so dirty raw and made such a shot of energy like this record. That's why I like Stones more!

One of the best rock albums of all time. Coming during one of the best album runs by any band from Beggars Banquet through to Goat's Head Soup but this is the Stones best. Despite not containing any big hits the album flows and is the most consistent that they have produced in their 50 year career, timeless album

We all know the backstory to Exile on Main St.: the Stones were practically banned from the UK and took refuge in the mansion of Keith and his girlfriend, located in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France. Here, what's probably the biggest jam session in history took place and the result is this absolute mammoth of a double album. Now, while the backstory really helped Exile to reach mythical proportions, it wouldn't have reached this mythical status if the album itself wasn't any less than a masterpiece. But rest assured: it is. Exile is a true Keith album; little experimentation in the - then - hip genres, but it's the culmination of all great "roots genres": fast paced rock'n'roll, danceable boogiewoogie, steaming blues, chill-out jazz and religious soul. Even though the hits are found on other Stones albums, every song here is a stone-cold classic. Furthermore, it hasn't aged one tiny bit. Simply put, Exile on Main St. is the wildest, most adventurous ride you can experience in one measely hour.
