Vitalogy is a record that will be forever remembered as a little worse than it actually is. In reality, this is a beast of a rock album. It has heavy headbangers ("Spin the Black Circle"), quirky deep cuts ("Tremor Christ"), ambient jams ("Immortality"), staples of alternative rock radio ("Corduroy"), and incredible ballads (the weepy "Nothingman" and the triumphant "Betterman," the latter of which is among the finest ballads in the entire 90s rock pantheon). It's so easy to quickly rate Vitalogy less than 5 stars - it's not as good as Ten or Vs., plain and simple. But let's not fail to see the forest for the trees; all three of Pearl Jam's first albums are nothing short of classic, and each should be cherished and revisited as such. In a way, coming back so frequently to the other albums makes a record like Vitalogy one that unsuspecting fans might find creeps up on them years later, with so many incredible songs seemingly trumped by their ever-so-slightly superior predecessors, most fans listen to Vitalogy less. And in a mysterious way, that makes it even fresher to hear every time.

Even more so than Vs, Vitalogy pushes Pearl Jam further away from its debut arena rocker blueprint. And proves once again, a successful decision. Not For You is a ferocious counterpoint to those desiring Ten II. And yes, Spin the Black Circle really sounds great on the turntable although I could live without ever listening to Bugs again.

The main issues I have with Vitalogy are: 1) Poor production, and 2) Excessive filler. In particular, the closer "Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me" is terrible, and makes one wonder what the band was thinking at that point. But don't get me wrong, some of the band's best songs are on here. Just skip all the filler and close it on "Immortality". That would've made a better closer anyway.rPersonal rating: 3.2

Seemingly one of Pearl Jam's records with the most intentional "filler" songs, despite that,
when Pearl Jam hits the high notes, it hits them. Hard. Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle,
Not For You, Tremor Christ, Nothingman, and Whipping are probably the best 6 starting tracks
for a Pearl Jam album besides Ten. Most of the "filler" songs ("Pry, To", "Bugs", "Satan's
Bed", "Aye Davanita") are tolerable, some even enjoyable in spite of themselves. Aside from
the horribly pretentious "mental hospital sound collage" Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me
(that wouldn't actually be that bad if it was wasn't 8 FREAKIN' MINUTES LONG), every song is
worth listening to, making for a superb, if not sometimes wildly inconsistent
album.

Here was in my opinion the first PJ album which really broke out of that 'grunge' mould and dared to challenge the formula with tracks like Aye Davanita and bugs. On the more accessible side the blessed us with betterman, nothingman and immortality which are the kind of melodies most bands would sacrifice limbs for. A rock classic!
