Well, I'll be damned! This album absolutely eviscerates its predecessor. Some songs won't reveal their secrets upon the very first spin, but I personally think no bad songs can be found here. I still need to listen to "Song of Mine" a lot more, but even now it's a very consistent and good record. Easily 4 or 4,5.

I stopped caring a long time ago about those who whine on about Tarja and her departure, Tuomas and his selling-out, how crap Ms Olzen is... etc. This is a superb album - theatrical, bombastic, poppy, metal, brooding, accessible, heavy, sympohonic, rocky, catchy, powerful... and so on. I'm a fan.

Some people complain that this album is wasted potential and others say that it's a classic, as far as I'm concerned it's just silly Symphonic Metal, it's silly and over the top, but enjoyable.

Not bad, this one just could be another GOOD album from Nightwish...surely the album was a quite enjoyable!!

After several listens, I've come to the conclusion that this is the most frustrating Nightwish album to date (including Endless Forms Most Beautiful). Everything presented should--and technically does--work, but something about how the tracks flow and mesh together simply doesn't. Going from the double-dose of "Storytime" and "Ghost River" to the strangely classical "Slow Love Slow," for instance, is more bizarre than it needs to be. Another oddity is the fact the slower moments feel like they intrude upon the album a little too much. There's a classic in here, one that shines through concepts and song fragments, but the entire package comes off feeling fractured, disconnected in more than enough ways to impede the entire journey.

Okay, time to inject my worthless opinion of this here album. Here's the jist of it: Nightwish further devolve and leave their glory days behind. That's right, the praise for this is totally unwarranted. Imaginaerum should have been incredible, but it isn't. The inclusion of the folksy, Celtic influences and grandiose orchestration is occasionally brilliant, spreading influence far and wide and helping to service Nightwish's eclecticism. However, little else can be praised. A lot of the most brilliant moments here are marred by the integration of too many genres. As a result, some of the more aimless meandering, i.e., the gorgeously evocative piano-led sections and folksy elements are tarnished by senselessly derivative song formulas and orchestral conclusions (although good here and there) that border on the overly theatrical side. The choirs feel like a total gimmick by now, and the formula is overwhelmingly poppy at times. All in all, a record that shows glimmers of brilliance that's hugely weighted by poor musicianship. What a shame - this could have been a classic.
