This is what happens when you hang around with David Bowie for long enough. This album is cold, robotic, and sinister. Iggy himself sounds almost as mechanical as the production, a complete about-face from his howling in the Stooges, but pulls off the deadpan delivery perfectly. Songs like the menacing, sleazy "Nightclubbing" and the threatening Gothic tones of "Funtime", are both about going out and having a good time but are delivered in such a deadpan and robotic way that it changes the meaning to highlight a sense of monotony and boredom with party scene. On "China Girl", a more sincere ballad, the ice melts a bit as Iggy belts passionately before a restrained but badass guitar riff takes it away. Overall, an excellent album.

Although The Idiot is most effectively categorised as post-punk, its influences and mix of genres are disparate to say the least. Taking elements of funk, krautrock, industrial, rock and electronica, the album boats a highly distinctive and deceptively varied sound. Despite its undercurrent of eclecticism, The Idiot is a very metallic and clinical record - its subtle traces of seemingly incompatible genres are capably moulded into a menacing post-punk cadence by Bowie's Alomar/Davis/Murray rhythm section. The Idiot is every bit as stunning as you'd expect from two of rock's most iconic and important stars, and then some. A consistently stunning and ground-breaking listen which breathed life into Iggy Pop's declining career, The Idiot is unequivocally one of the most defining and essential albums of its era.

Effectively a test run for Bowie's futuristic masterpiece "Low", "The Idiot" is a dystopian, alienated album full of stylised burn-outs. Bowie's production and arrangement fully override Pop's own performances. Given that the Detroit native owed his life and career to the chameleon (Bowie would later split royalties for his smash hit version of 'China Girl' with Pop), he was probably happy to let that slide.

Sounding very much like a David Bowie album (for obvious reasons), this album delivers funky nigh-mechanical beats and bass with synthesizers and subdued electric guitars and lo-fi vocals, all at a mid-tempo pace. There's a revolutionary spirit in its simplicity, with "Sister Midnight" setting the tone, that is bolstered by driving, hypnotic beats and easy melodies. It's all blasé, ironic, post-modern, and hip in a new wave kind of way.
