A risky album that dared to change the universally acclaimed sound that appeared on 'Violator' and explore a slightly rockier edge. On the whole it works rather well and even though it doesn't beat their late 80's highs, it comes damn close.

Whilst both clearly lacking the flair and legendary status of Violator's top tracks and also having many dips, this is a commendable effort. They venture in directions not quite seen before in their catalogue, some of which are surprising and somewhat impressive given this came out in 1993. 4 has somewhat of a trip-hop flavour dare I say, and 8 could've fit on the Matrix OST. 6 is kinda cooil too. In spite of the variety, the transitions are generally functional. There aren't too many frank dips, among which we can especially count the Disney princesscore 9, but there is a general feel of okay rock atop cool electronic layers. 1 is a prime example of a track being okay, but really not as good as the top flight DM tracks have been. This gets an extra point for being daring, but the resulting quality, whilst certainly there, is not enough to bring me back to this reliably. 3.8

This outing shows a group perfectly capable of adapting to the times. Where many New Wave groups were suffering a slump in the 90's, Depeche Mode managed to continue their quality output.

Powerful, passionate with tons of swagger. Songs of Faith and Devotion proves that D.M. can
really ROCK. It's rather unlikely combination of Industrial Rock with gospel and blues
influences, but it works astonishingly well. Dave Gahan also does some of his best vocal
work on here, he delivers the choruses of these songs with such dramatic intensity. The only
drawback to this album is the occasionally banal lyrics on tracks like "One Caress", "Get
Right With Me" and "Walking in My Shoes". Usually, though, the music more than makes up for
it.
