One thing's for sure: The Sisters Of Mercy love their Leonard Cohen. In stark contrast to every one of their studio full-lengths, Some Girls Wander By Mistake is merely decent. The comp brings together all of their material made from 1980-1983, but it is clear from the songs here that they had not nearly come into their own quite yet as darkwave masterminds, not showing their hand much at all as the majority of the material is relatively by-the-books gothic-infused post-punk. It's not bad by any means, as Andrew Eldritch is still pretty charismatic as a vocalist and guitarist Gary Marx has a few catchy lines up his sleeve, but altogether the material is pretty standard. It doesn't help that the compilation is is bloated with this stuff, coming in at just under eighty minutes, which makes it a bit of tough release to get through. It's great that they'd grow afterward and release some seminal records in the genre, but these are very humble, yet still decent, beginnings.
