History remembers Sinatra as an arrogant, swaggering man, full of life and full of bravado. "My Way". "New York, New York". Even "Love & Marriage", later adopted as the theme for TV series Married With Children. In The Wee Small Hours destroys that notion. This is the sound of a man descending into depression, a man alone. His legendary voice is now underpinned not by masculinity, but by longing and sadness. His reading of Hoagy Carmichael's "I Get Along Without You Very Well" is heartbreaking (the emotion invested into the opening couplet is stunning); opener "In The Wee Small Hours of The Morning", written specifically for the album, even more so. The real high watermark, though, is the album's centerpoint. Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love?" sees him crying, wounded. Throughout, Riddle's sympathetic arrangements are brilliant. Serious fans of music can be split into two camps - those who own this album, and those who have a big fat gap in their collections.

Perfect late night jazz vibe. For the first "conceptual" album its really good, even if I prefer the up-beat swing Sinatra, Sinatra deliver a superb perfomance. 3.3/5

In the Wee Small Hours is one of the most significant and influential records of all time because it was the first concept album ever released. Beyond that though, the songs themselves are fantastic in every respect (aside from maybe a couple of forced lyrical rhymes) and Sinatra sounds phenomenal. Take for example "Can't We Be Friends?"- the emotion in his voice is incredible. If you haven't heard In the Wee Small Hours then do so immediately. Not only is it one of the most important albums in music history, but it is a damn good listen on its own terms.

'In the Wee Small Hours' is one of the first concept albums to come into existence, and it's also one of the best. Full of brilliant string arrangements and Sinatra's signature voice, 'In the Wee Small Hours' is an incredibly emotional album that conveys loneliness in a way that almost anybody can relate to.
