underrated af. one of SYL's most consistent efforts with plenty of moments of brilliance

The successor of City, although hyped and very highly regarded today is nonetheless the least impressive SYL album. There are a number of reasons why this album was bound to be a step down from City. Devin admitted in several interviews that he was far more interested in Accelerated Evolution (one of his solo albums) rather than recording this album. Although he composed 95% of the material here, he allowed Jed Simon and Gene Hoglan to write some songs and to handle the production. As a result, with the exception of 2 tracks, everything else is pedestrian and this album has the least impressive production quality of all 5 SYL albums. Still, Relentless and Aftermath are head and shoulders classics, on par with the best tracks on the debut and City. Particularly Aftermath with its gargantuan long fast-thrash part in the second half, one of the best moments not only in SYL's catalog, but in metal overall.

After City, Strapping Young Lad did not release another album for seven years. This was due to Devin Townsend's pre-Infinity mental breakdown leaving him afraid to traverse the internal territory necessary for Strapping's music. Eventually he relented, however he was not really interested in the recording of this album (The Devin Townsend Band's Accelerated Evolution, which he was recording at the same time, took most of his attention) and, aside from certain moments ("Bring On the Young"), self-admittedly based the lyrics around "tough guy posturing" and not what he was really feeling. This results in a disconnected and disappointing album which does not live up to its predecessors.

Fantastic album, I love many tracks off it and it definitely deserves a listen. Highly recommended for fans of extreme metal. Not quite as epic as Alien or City, though.
