Both his singing and rapping have gotten better. Unfortunately for the latter, that doesn't
say much. He still rips off Lil Wayne's style (though Lil Wayne does it much better) and
just tries to use any opportunity to pack in a nerd pop culture reference to make his fans
go, "xDDD I KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT HE MUST BE AN AMAZING RAPPER." and some of his
"trying to be deep" lyrics are cringeworthy. (ex: "...talking STUPID shit. Or maybe it's
real shit. Because sometimes stupid shit IS real shit") and most of his "personal" lyrics
are the same thing "blahblahblah I'm a black rapper who acts white, deal with it cuz I'm
good at sex", and to be honest about half of the tracks are throwaway unless you like really
stupid attempts at being personal . Enough on the side of the cons, some of the pros are
that the production can be grandiose for the most part (some beats are awful, and Heartbeat
is an abomination) , there are a number of clever lines per song and he even learned how to
make a few internal rhymes. Not the AOTY some Youtube fans claim it to be, but some songs
are fun to listen to.

What a surprise! Honestly! I always liked CG for a laugh, but this album is really excellent!rHeartfelt, sincere, catchy as all hell, and just as clever as we expect from Donald Glover.rHighly recommended, in my top 5 of 2011!

The individual songs on this album are actually quite good, but Glover can't seem to decide if he wants to be a hard thug from the hood or the innocent nice guy. He needs to pick one persona and stick with it, and then maybe I could get into his next album. As it stands now though, this album is just too all over the place.

13 songs of Childish Gambino complaining about how he isn't perceived as Black enough. Nice production, decent hooks...Glover is undeniably talented, but this lacks any rhyme to its reason. Rarely does Gambino come through with a song filled with more than just clever one liners. But there is certainly room for growth, and he only got better with each album

As someone that doesn't listen to much or enjoy much rap/hip hop, I found this to be an enjoyable album. Donald Glover has a nice flow with nerdy pop culture references, and touches a tad on his personal life. Musically it's enjoyable overall, but it's the songs with strings, pianos, etc. that stray from the usual rap beats that stand out. There are a few misfires here and there, but overall a fun listen.

The best tracks here are are heartbeat, because it's a great look at a will-they won't they relationship, Bonfire, because that's just one helluva banger, and the final track for the scope of it, and the hint of what's to come. the rest is just really decent early Kanye esque rap stuff

I'm fairly conflicted over Donald Glover's musical project. It is entertaining, to say the least, to a see Community actor and 30 Rock writer rap about girls sucking his dick. The beats overall are good, but as a whole feel pretty sterile. They feel almost too clean, as if they were hip-hop samples found on a website. The dubstep-ish beat in Heartbeat and the speeding up orchestral part at the end of That Power are the most shining moments of the album beat-wise. The lyrics are okay here and there, but it feels like Glover's whole purpose for about half of the album is convincing his audience why they should be his fans. Despite the lack of real meaning within the lyrics, he can actually flow. Other lyrics on this album are about him growing up, his experiences with women, and pretty much why he is an awesome guy. The choruses are interesting because for the most part, he actually sings in them. His singing isn't terrible, but the lyrics he sings never really seem to relate to the song. Choruses such as in "That Power" seem more cringe-worthy than anything. Despite how otherwise talented Glover may be, his skills as a rapper are lacking. My favorite track from the album would have to be L.E.S.

Childish Gambino phrases every line like a comedy actor. Makes sense, since he is. He should stick to acting, because it brings an unnatural feeling to the music that none of the themes connect and it makes it all sound hack. Terrible.

Donald Glover reaffirms himself as a player in the game of hip-hop, and his entrance point is dripping with unashamedly clever lines. Sometimes it can feel like too many references in too little time, but overall Childish Gambino leaves an overall impression of a newcomer to the game that perhaps has a chance of making it huge one day in the music world, despite his prominence in the acting scene already.
