Now this is what I was looking for in my thrash binge. Nice brootal, riffy thrash metal. The vox is quite nice, but it feels like the dude has too many words to spit out at times (especially in the first track). The mixing of the drums is quite weird, the snare sounds lovely but the kick not so much. In general the prod is passable, but not the best either. To be honest every track has nice brutal riffs, super groovy at times (middle of 5, end of 9), and some nice but not as good sections, so I kinda lost count of which tracks are jams and which aren't. 3 didn't seem as well constructed and nice as 1 or 2. 4 almost sounds like angry Maiden with nice fat riffs. 5 introduces a welcome break in the onslaught. 9's intro is a bit weird, but thereafter it's a banger although the very album closing is also really weird. This isn't revolutionary but goddamn it's good thrash, I'll definitely come jam it again. 4.1

Exhorder may not have had the greatest success in attaining a 'true' identity, but it's not really their fault. The style here is actually theirs, groovy thrash with some elements of death metal in the drumming and pummeling riffs, but Pantera ran off with the groovy thrash concept and even had their own vocalist which shamefully sounds too much like Kyle Thomas, the frontman here. Sure Pantera turned out to be pretty good, but Slaughter In The Vatican is far more brutal, gut-wrenching, 'anal' if you will, and overall more satisfying than pretty much anything Pantera put out before and after their Cowboys From Hell. The underlying grooves here are tasteful and add onto the downtuned guitar riffs which make up for the rather competent but unimpressive soloing. "Death In Vein," "Desecrator," and "Legions of Death" are choice cuts, and while this album is lacking in variety outside of its groove outfit, it's a very pleasing album for those who like their thrash more abrasive and groovy than usual.

How much hate can a band pput into one album? Clearly Exhorder wanted to break the record for this with their seminal debut that packs so much rage into its running time that it really is a thing to marvel at

This is definitely one of the heaviest thrash metal albums of all time, as well as one of the fastest. On this album, they mix both slow and extremely fast tempos with great effect and skill, proving that Exhorder is very versitlie as a band. In the slower sections, they show traces of groove metal, but the fastest parts of the albums can compete with anything from Slayer or dark angel and its Much heavier. It is clear just from listening to this where pantera got their inspiration from in the 90s, only they wernt half as good as this band. Exhorder still played thrash fucking metal!! Pantera was rather watered down in comparrison. Excellent album.

FUCKING THRASH. For me this album embodies what thrash is supposed to be. While not as technically impressive as some of its contemporary albums, Slaughter In The Vatican captures the pissed off attitude that defines thrash as a genre.
