Solid start for a very influential American band. Most of the bigger proto-metal bands came from the UK (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zep etc.), but here is the most important American one. Sure, their sounnd is much more streamlined almost glammy, but for the time quite heavy. A nice little album.

This would be a ROCK HARD FIVE were it not for the inclusion of Kissin' Time, which isn't awful, but letsbehonesthere it's kinda lame and really brings the whole thing down. "Thunder Rock" it ain't.

The first KISS album includes many of their best songs, but they lose points with the sound quality which could have been better. I prefer the live versions of each of these songs that are on "Alive" over these recordings. Had the sound quality been better, this album would easily have been a 5 for me.

Certainly the best album of the band's long and gloriously inconsistent career. Only 1 weak track (KISSin' Time). The rest own heavily. Strutter is a great party track, Nothin' To Lose demonstrates their crispy vocals, Deuce is a Gene classic, Cold Gin sets the stage for Ace's influences and Black Diamond is an epic length bonanza. If it's 1 KISS album you're after, make damn sure it's this one.

While it is very good, & probably is the most consistently good Kiss album, surely no-one really thinks that "Kissin' Time" or "Love Theme from Kiss" are anything but lame filler!
Excellent party rock save those 2 tracks.
I can see why Ace would like this album best. I think they rushed subsequent albums to keep the money-machine tours going. Lots of throw-away tracks on the next several albums.

The group at it's bare bones...this is Ace Frehley's favorite album as he says it's the most "honest"....kinda tells you what he thought about what direction the band took after this.....
