Judgement is one of my favourite albums of all time for a few reasons. 1) Its complete honesty, and the unbridled and raw emotion with which that trait manifests itself. 2) The production is absolutely spot on, perfectly blending the frequent combinations of electric and acoustic guitars. The vocals sit at just the right spot in the mix as well. 3) The songwriting and album pacing are flawless. None of the tracks sound the same, but they all fit together and contribute to the overall theme and mood of the record. I haven't even mentioned the excellent performances or the incredible lyrics, yet this album possesses both of those qualities as well. Judgement is, quite simply, one of the best albums ever recorded, and you owe it to yourself to listen to it.

An untouchable, brilliant album that not only achieves an astonishing atmosphere of somber melancholy, but also maintains it throughout the course of one hell of a streak of amazing songs: A journey through what I feel is one of the most emotionally rich albums of all time. That said, despite the astonishing consistency, it's still bewilderingly uncontestable how obviously One Last Goodbye is the best on this. A song for the ages, and one of my favorites of all time. - 10

My "it's night-time and it's raining outside" band, and this is the album I reach for more than any other. Anathema have a number of outstanding albums, but I, much like many others, feel that Judgement is the band's magnum opus. I'd go as far to say it's one of the best albums of all time. It's always classed under the "depressing albums" title, and that's because it is, and it works in its favour. Albums can be dark and depressing lyrically, but the music fails to accompany it. Judgement however, does that in spades. That's why it works so well, why it's become the soundtrack to depressed people's lives, and why it's so damn brilliant.

This album embodies pure and bitter pain. After the death of their mother, the Cavanagh brothers must have experienced one hell of an emotional ride, because this album was released in its aftermath, and it is nothing but breathtakingly haunting. Anathema's sorrow does not manifest itself in the form of brute force anymore, but the incredibly powerful riffs and melodies combine with keyboard atmospheres to create dark, moody soundscapes that gather over the album like black clouds. Almost every song screams in bitterness, and the lyrics deal with a seemingly endless depression. It may one of the bleakest albums ever released, but despite its gloom and doom, it is also superbly beautiful, and essential listening for anyone with only the slightest hint of interest in the dark side. A completely stupendously amazing release.

I like some of Anathema's other albums. This one is melodically bland and overrated, even if One Last Goodbye is a moving track. It took the band years to recover from Duncan Patterson's departure.

This band meant the world to me a few years
ago. I eventually realised that they are
rather repetitive, that they only have one way
of expressing their message: float around
moodily, scream heart out, and resolve
into a misty optimism. Works really well
tho, and their transcending genre boundaries
thing keeps stuff from getting boring.
Objectively, this is not quite a classic, but
to hell with that.
