My favourite soundtrack of all time from my favourite video game of all time, and this is one of the few video game soundtracks (along with Chrono Trigger, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and the Zelda titles) that I love to listen to independent from the games. Just as Super Metroid helped to revolutionise and create a new genre of gaming, Kenji Yamamoto brought ambient soundscapes to gaming in a way that had not been done hitherto. Each track serves an integral role in creating the atmosphere that characterises each region of Zebes, the 16-bit processing makes the tense tracks like those of Crateria's and Norfair's more unsettling than they could have ever been otherwise, the main theme of Crateria is a total homage to Vangelis, Brinstar Jungle Floor is akin to a 16-bit Depeche Mode on loop (being my favourite track from the game), and tracks like Brinstar Underground Depths and Meridia Swampy Caverns are hauntingly beautiful, staying in my head for hours after I finish playing through the game or listening to the soundtrack. The game has to be recommended first, since it is an absolute classic, and is flawless in my view; however, the soundtrack in and of itself is worth checking out and getting regardless, and is legendary in its own right.

Simplicity at its best. This soundtrack has an amazing space and sci-fi environment.
