completely lacking a sense of rhythm does not make something ahead of its time, this is just shit music that somebody decided to try and make profound by littering it with absurdest tags like 'art rock' 'freak folk' and 'avant-garde'rthis is the musical equivalent of that performance artist who gets on stage and shits and pisses and menstruates on a canvas and smears it around with her fingers and a paint brush. doing something nobody has seen before and being able to talk it up and pretend it has some sort of obscure and sophisticated meaning doesn't make it a higher art form. i could slice my dick in half and fill it up with cottage cheese and tell you that it is a metaphor for the increased desensitization of humanity towards sex, but it wouldnt mean it is profound. it would mean im a good liar and everyone who thinks im 'edgy' and 'ahead of my time' is a gullible fuck. some things do not need to be seen or heard.

Captain Beefheart ignores musical cliches almost entirely and ends up creating an aural experience that is as beautiful as it is deranged and puzzling. Truly unmatched by any album before or after it.

Complicated as fuck without sounding the least bit intellectual or pretentious. Melodic and catchy but not banal. Versatile but cohesive. Lyrics - abstract but meaningful. A whole new world inside rock music, and a beautiful one.

This album was so bad I had to laugh - and I laughed until there were tears in my eyes. There is not a single song on this album that doesn't stumble and fall apart; sometimes hilariously so, but other times in a way that physically made me cringe. Even though I listened to this with my lover, and we enjoyed the laughter and the novelty, by the end, I was counting down the minutes until it was over. And yet... there is something about this album that sticks with you, for better or for worse. I find myself singing the lyrics (albeit in funny voices) and wanting to hear some of those songs "just one more time" just to "remind myself how bad it was." This is a terrible, terrible album. And I just might listen to it again really soon.

The best avant garde album out there. Captain Beefheart does a nice job of compiling an album filled with bizarre music, while still giving off a bluesy feel to it. A very good album overall.

Even if I listened to this albums a lot of times, I really cannot understand it. It is not something new for the time because experimentation was not new, maybe here experimentation is extraordinarly emphasised, but for me this album is complete rubbish and nothing else.

Produced by Frank Zappa, TROUT MASK REPLICA is a highly challenging piece of avant-garde experimental rock & surrealism
that only the bravest die hards will want to endure. Critical reaction to this album seems fairly polarized between
absolute love and hate. In any case, it is NOT an easy record to sit through given it's often chaotic arrangements and
double play record length. While I might have some respect for Zappa's radical bent in creating something this weird
and awful, it also seems to be something of a hateful act. Even as a fan of Zappa's work, many of these "songs" can be
painful to listen to.
Rather than give this a 1 out of 10 for it's sheer awfulness, I would elevate that rating by half a point because I don't
think it is completely without value. There IS something here, but achieving that epiphany might require a more masochistic
bent than I currently possess. [I had to bail out after listening to 20 out of 28 tracks. Good luck on matching my patience
with this record.]

Ummmmmmm.... Yeah, I guess I just don't get this. I mean I can enjoy weird insane music as much as the next guy (see my Ratings page), but this is just way too out there for me.
