I fucking hate progressive rock, but this one didn't bug me for some reason. Actually kinda enjoyed it.

A pretty cool album. Suffers from production issues and a strong tendency towards ballads. However overall not bad. Highlights include cuts like Tupaz and the jam at the end of the second track. Solid stuff.

There are glimmers of greatness here on Journey's debut album, especially in the majestic opener "Of A Lifetime". The album does possess a great vibe and some extremely capable musicianship. Fans of their Steve Perry-era stuff may not dig this era, but musicians will. Style wise, this is somewhere between progressive rock & fusion.

Journey's debut is a prog-oriented release which mostly focuses on the individual talents of each band member. Neil Schon delivers some sweet melodies at time and there is some proficient drumming for from Aynsley Dunbar. This is totally different from what the band became known about during the 80s. Recommendations: "Of a Lifetime", "To Play Some Music".
