The Sisters Of Mercy's first two albums are undeniable classics in the gothic rock/darkwave spectrum, and for good reason. Much is said of their debut First And Last And Always, but Floodland is arguably the better album. The ghostly, downtrodden feel of the debut has been replaced by a darker, more epic, more driven sound, and this is apparent from massive opener "Dominion / Mother Russia" alone. Choral vocals along with some heavier guitar make the song huge, but minimalism still works its way into the record with piano-driven "1959". The cornerstone of the record is "This Corrosion", a groovy, epic masterpiece that stacks up as possibly The Sisters' best song. Add to all of this a fantastically dark and distraught vocal performance by one Andrew Eldritch, and you have yourself a defining goth record. Oh, and almost every song here criminally catchy to boot.

Another really great aesthetically gothic/post-punk record from the 80's that is somewhat undermined by its 80's style production values. Some really great songs here nevertheless but this is clearly just my preference when it comes to the sound of the record.

Grandiloquent gothic rock. Yes, grandiloquent. It's no morbid stuff (wink wink) like The Field, the guitars' importance being reduced for the benefit of the synths. The vocalist's barytone voice and sharp sense of melody, as well as the incorporation of the New York Choral Society make for a banger record that doesn't hesitate to visit the industrial zone's borders. Although the atmosphere tends to be gloomy, the drum machine and slick production make the gloominess very 80s; thus less intimidating and more bombastic. Some songs overstay their welcome, but overall it's a great 80s gothic album.

A glorious Goth Rock milestone, it combines booming choirs and ominous lead vocals with hypnotic basslines and huge, mechanical percussion to create one of the best albums of the Sisters' career.
