Definitely an improvement over their last two albums, but it still contains the atmosphere that makes Evanescence a good band. Don't be fooled by What You Want, the single they released is one of the only generic songs on the album.

This release gave me the urge to almost thoroughly enjoy Evanescence for who they are. Their self-titled third studio album is a bit less overdone than Fallen and especially The Open Door, though it's still quite vapid and represents the reason as to why Amy Lee shouldn't be the star of this show. Evanescence's heavier tracks (e.g. "End of the Dream" and "Never Go Back") are also tolerable enough on their own.

Evanescence should be commended for not resting on the safe pop/goth
sound that got them so much attention. The Open Door showed the band
trying a little bit old and a little bit new (to mixed results) but
the latest release demonstrates a band ready to move in a new
direction.
Amy's vocals are stronger than ever, the lyrics have matured and
thankfully the angst appears to have been toned down somewhat. None of
the other band members are really given much chance to shine though
and this has resulted in a lot of the songs having little personality
of their own.
With a little more focus on utilizing the whole band's talents, this
could have been a real classic. As it stands though, this is still a
strong release and shows a band that is willing to grow.

Fallen was sick; this is not. Its not totally horrible, its just one of the least memorable albums in a while for me. And one of the most disappointing.

Amy Lee has such an amazing voice. In all honesty she is the only member that keeps Evanescence alive. Her contribution is the driving force, not to say the only reason that keeps this band tolerable.

Allow me to say that this album is their best effort 2 date, first of all you can feel the whole band's effort in this album, i really think that they had fun recording this album.ri can see that the band wants to change, yes we had fun with the old days but we r in 2012 amy lee is 30, most of the band r in their 30s the have grown up so as their music and style, the album is refreshing and welcome back guys m/

Great album if you are at all interested in rock/metal music. Amy introduces a couple of new vocal styles, particuarily in "What You Want" and "Secret Door". Absolutely love this album.

Examining themselves and their musical roots, Evanescence explores multiple aspects in their third release and enters into multiple chasms while correcting earlier musical faults, however the lack of major depth still plagues the band as they rely too much on Amy's vocals and not enough on the music behind it, bar the well-placed string arrangements.
