| 4.5 superb | dante1991 | September 3rd 11 | Absolutely brilliant album from DT. After all the turbulence in the band with Portnoy leaving, they strike back better than ever. The album encompasses their best elements. It's very melodic (LaBrie is phenomenal, could be the performance of his career!), yet extremely progressive, much more so than Black Clouds. rRudess also shines here, some of his best work can be found, especially the frankly stunning opening of "Lost Not Forgotten". Petrucci does a great job producing and his guitar work is fantastic as usual, taking the album in a lighter (thank god) direction than the last few. rOne thing that also struck me, was the lyrical quality. I have not heard lyrics so strong and meaningful since Awake, people who hated SC's & BCSL's lyrics should enjoy the more old school feel here.rFinally, Myung. HE'S BACK BITCHES! This album finally brings him back into the limelight and he does an incredible job with far more complex bass than DT has had in about a decade.rThe only slight negative is that the album can get very wanky in some parts, but it does work for the song.rA final note, give it a few listens, it's not as immediate as the last few records, but it's so worth it! :D

| 4.5 superb | sandersonmusicnz | September 4th 11 | I loved this album, I think personally it's stronger than Black Clouds & Silver Linings. Lyrically its their best effort for a while with both LaBrie & Myung contributing. The guitar playing from Petrucci is well executed throughout. His solos seem to be more thought out and reserved in some places and the chord progressions really compliment his playing. It was good to hear Myung's bass playing wander a little from following the guitar, also he cuts through the mix nicely. As for Mangini, I'm not going to bother mentioning much since creatively he had nothing to do with this album except perform drums that Petrucci had already programmed & written prior to the addition of Mangini but I'm sure on the next album he'll be free to express his creative side. All in all this album is one of my favorites,if I was to pick at least one con it'd be the way the album ended, I wasn't a fan of ending brilliance on a bit of a downer lol

| 3.0 good | TronaldDump | September 5th 11 | Finally, a rock solid album from DT that doesn't have blatant, obvious flaws hitting you right in the face (annoying growls, overly-cheesy lyrics, barely-audible bass, etc.). Sure, there isn't much new material to be found on this disc, but what did you expect? Wait for their next CD when Mangini is involved in the songwriting if you want new material. Top 3 Songs: Breaking All Illusions, Bridges in the Sky, Lost Not Forgotten

| 4.5 superb | BaturTogay | September 6th 11 | Their best album since SFAM. Also very similar to their epic album Images and Words.Portnoy's "metal-metal-metal" love was killing Dream Theater's progressive spirit. But now I can honestly say that DREAM THEATER IS BACK !!!

| 3.5 great | lak89 | September 7th 11 | A real breath of fresh air, everyone sounds inspired and renewed. Myung can finally be heard in the mix and he even does some solos himself, his contributions are more apparent. A lot less wank on this album than on previous ones (although I am at the same time a sucker for technical wank), Petrucci and Rudess play some of the most tasteful solos in their career in Lost Not Forgotten, almost reminiscent of the solo tradeoff in Under A Glass Moon. Mangini did not have any creative input in the writing side of things, so I can't comment on that, but his playing on the album is solid. James sounds particularly renewed in my opinion, his vocals are more organic and his dynamics can be heard more than on previous releases. My minor nitpicks will be that this album is on the softer side, part of why I like DT so much is their metal side as well, what Portnoy brought to the table, and 3 ballads is one too many for any album imo, 2 works just fine for me. DT is far from done, and this album proves that.

| 4.5 superb | tom6 | September 3rd 11 | A creative breath of fresh air for DT, who draw heavily from both their old and new selves to create an album that sounds, above all, confident. Drum work is more subdued than I'd expect, but maybe the band needed that in order to relax and find a balance - and craft the excellent, cohesive epics they did, banishing the contrived modern metal influences of their recent releases. I could point out the highlights, but I'd just name the whole album; so instead, a rule of thumb: the longer the song, the better it is.

| 2.9 good | Erwann S. EMERITUS | January 19th 22 | I remember seeing tons of ads in rock magazines back then - 'member rock magazines? Finally gave a listen, it's decent Dream Theater. It's big and epic and cheesy and trite and too long. Not that unpleasant though, yay!
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | Robinanimate | June 29th 21 | Close to the prog metal magic Dream Theater once produced, but I still miss that spark of creative naivete that made Images & Words and A Change of Seasons what they are.
Bump |
| 3.0 good | GamamJ | May 4th 20 | Innovation? Not much. Dream Theater don?t necessarily challenge themselves here, and one can see why. The departure of Portnoy of course left a huge question mark over DT?s future, and it is understandable they played it somewhat safe with this album. Wank, melody and chuggy metal supplemented with ballads, it has everything DT has ever been. Not great but not bad.

Bump |
| 1.0 awful | EasterInTheBatcave | December 5th 15 | A hilarious release, because a huge deal was made of the search for and ultimate hiring of Dream Theater's new drummer, and on the album featuring him (this one) you can hardly hear his parts! Furthermore, there are too many sappy ballads, and even the non-ballad tracks are bland; as a result, the album falls completely flat.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | Handyman003 | October 26th 14 | An admirable effort, with a renewed focus on songwriting, "A Dramatic Turn of Events" is Dream Theater's true return-to-form. It is focused, cohesive, and best of all, very melodic. The songwriting is purely original and really stands out - it puts their last few albums or so to shame. And newcomer Mike Mangini shows a ton of promise, even though his drums are a little soft in the mix. I know I'll get scorned for saying this, but I'm not afraid to say it: this is Dream Theater in their best shape since "Scenes from a Memory". And that says a lot.

Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | MetalMan79 | March 14th 12 | Excellent review, but I think the difference between your 3.5 and my 4 is the following: John Petrucci is actually the one who wrote the drum parts, which is a common thing when a new drummer joins a band. I'm not saying that Mangini has the power Portnoy had, but next album is gonna show off his skills a lot more. "This Is The Life" is the best ballad on the album IMO, and "Bridges In The Sky" took my heart when I saw them live in Montreal, Canada, a couple of months ago. It was simply mindblowing. And, on a last note, I&W can't be beaten.
Bump |
| 0.0 | PerpetualChange | March 14th 12 | A huge return of form for the best that sees them being true to themselves rather than catering to any modern mall metal influences, unlike the last two albums. This is DT being themselves, and it's excellent.

| 3.5 great | TRMshadow | December 28th 11 | The regular prog-metal offering from Dream Theater that we've come to be familiar with. Nothing outlandishly outstanding... other than the over-the-top antics that come with the genre. Still, a pleasurable listen. 3.7/10
Bump |
| 3.5 great | Zilla2112 | November 26th 11 | 'A Dramatic Turn of Events' is a solid Dream Theater release, despite being without Portnoy. Some of the longer, more developed tracks stand out, but sadly, the album feels too much like a rehash of Dream Theater's earlier material, and the cheesy ballad, "Beneath the Surface", doesn't help much either.
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | MajorStupidity | November 24th 11 | Drum fills are somewhat bland compared to Portnoy, but the return of Songwriting taking precedent over technical displays more than makes up for it. BTW ballads are actually well done and dont feel like they have just been tacked on because its tradition.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | Mabbitt | November 23rd 11 | The departure of Portnoy seemingly refreshed the band and got them away from the awkward metal sound. This is the best DT has sounded in a while.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | lifter | October 16th 11 | I 100% guarantee you that if you replace Mangini with Portnoy but keep the music exactly the same, there is nowhere near the same reaction of overwhelmingly enthusiastic and positive reviews. In fact, I bet you'd be reading a lot of reviews "same old Dream Theater album, nothing new, nothing exciting, but outstanding musicianship." The biggest difference I noticed is that drums are way back in the mix (would have never happened if Portnoy were producing, fair enough), and you can actually hear Myung fairly clearly. Also, in my opinion, this sounds much more like a continuation of the string of "metal" albums than a return to early Dream Theater. Highlights for me are "Bridges in the Sky" and "Outcry" (the song Muse wish they had written for their previous album--minus the instrumental wank). I hope whichever label exec who approved the cover art gets fired.
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | Xenorazr | October 15th 11 | Though a bit of a regression from Black Clouds and Silver Linings, A Dramatic Turn of Events sees the band in a less forced light. It begins very erratically with regards to style and direction, but eventually settles on a rhythm which provides some stellar moments, along with at least one of the band's best, most recent tracks.
Bump |

| 3.0 good | Fernando Alves | September 19th 11 | If Images and Words, Awake or Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory didn't exist A Dramatic Turn of Events
will be a very cool record. Too much deja vu stuff in my opinion. Mike Mangini is an amazing drummer but
Mike Portnoy is irreplaceable.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | Destructerator | September 15th 11 | The depature of Mike Portnoy leaves something missing in the drums for this album, but it seems the "Dramatic Turn of Events" mentioned in the album title has sobered the other members. Here you will find a renewed vigor in musicality, vs. technicality, resembling their earlier material. Most likely their best since Six Degrees.

| 4.0 excellent | Dimor | September 4th 11 | a fairly good album with some good moments. Getting a bit tired of Petruccis repetitive chugga-chugga riffing.. Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | bogdanbele | September 4th 11 | I was eagerly waiting for this one, having seen them live a few weeks ago with Mangini (and it was amazing to say the least). The album didn't disappoint me at all. I would tend to say it's Dream Theater at a mature point, intentionally leaving out some of the metal parts they had on albums like TOT or Systematic Chaos, and trying to regain some of the melody of Images & Words or Falling Into Infinity (some of it, at least).rAlso, you can feel that, with Portnoy leaving, Jordan Rudess now has a more important to say in terms of writing. He seems much more present here.rI like LaBrie's vocal parts even if there's less high-pitched singing on this one. "Beneath The Surface" has one of the most soulful performances he has ever done (and he has done quite a few).rA very solid album, beyond my expectations. They've managed to prove that there is life after Portnoy.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | Yazz_Flute | September 3rd 11 | Almost ironic that the addition of noted chops-out-the-fucking-ass drummer Mike Mangini seems to have subdued Dream theater's overall sound. A Dramatic Turn of Events has the least amount of wank on a Dream Theater album since, well, ever (take that as you will, it hasn't completely vanished). The more metallic sound Dream Theater had been pushing for the past ten or so years has also been turned down several clicks, creating an album which is closer in timbre to "Images and Words" or "A Change of Seasons" even, than "Systematic Chaos" or "Train of Thought." At 77 minutes, it's still far too long, but A Dramatic Turn of Events is ultimately much more solid than it could have been. A Dramatic Turn of Events, indeed.
Bump |

Bump |
| 3.5 great | ShinXetsu | September 2nd 11 | In a certainly "Dramatic Turn of Events", without Mike Portnoy at the helm shoving metal
influences into the music; Dream Theater revert to a safe haven of pure Progressive Rock.
Falling back on what they do best with their recently regained ability to cut back on a bit
of excess technique, the unit feels more comfortable playing as a group as ever, without the
collective crash and burn mentality that plagued albums like Systematic Chaos when things
got out of hand.
Unfortunately, the music isn't always groundbreaking throughout and doesn't give newcomer
Mike Mangini thorough creative control to show everything he's got, but as a band in
transition out of a sea of turbulent times; I'm pretty excited to see what will be in store
when they all go at it with Mike included.
Highlights: Outcry, Breaking All Illusions, Bridges in the Sky
