Anything related to either of the guys from Stars of the Lid is really fucking
good, but this is like really really fucking good

This is simply stunning. It captures the majesty of a snow-blown winter morning; every detail, every contour and curve, every angle and jagged edge, and the glint of the snowflakes in the sunshine. The ethereal, timelessness and transcendence, flow through this music, permeating its every surface and hoisting it up; the softness of it loftily floating above the abyss, fragily, fleetingly. In a word, this record is tragic. The human heart and Universe have so little in common, yet, seemingly so much as well. I wept, but for what, I cannot tell you, for I know not myself.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen is one of the most emotionally impactful pieces of instrumental music I've heard in my entire life. It breaks my heart to hear the beautiful, softly played piano interplay with the strings. It's softness is both soothing and also awe inspiring. This album is healing for me and, in a lot of ways, listening to it is a spiritual experience. I would recommend this to anyone. You'll get something out of it, even if it's just a nice nap.

Absolutely gorgeous ambient, and imo far superior to SotL by keeping it shorter and adding lovely elements in the piano. This one just sets the mood - this mood https://i.pinimg.com/originals/3c/39/37/3c3937b55e077318bf773647d0e77492.jpg . Peace, and the slow waves at the bottom of the sea. Now, like most SotL-related material, it does overextend, with the 6th and first half of the 7th track dragging on for a tad too long. Thankfully the latter half of 7 is gorgeous with its delicate piano. Up to Vicodin Tears this is easily a 4.7, but overall feels like a 4.4

It really is stunningly beautiful, yet simple. Those aware of Stars of the Lid might find this ambient style familiar (They share a main member). Yet, this is a unique release to that name. I doubt it's the first to tackle minimalism in this way, but it's the first I'd recommend people to.

I feel I need to listen to this while watching the stars. Then I'll start to be sad and be overwhelmed by the black immensity of the universe. Then I'll be calmed and will watch the stars as they are: tiny dots in the sky I don't know anything about.
