Instead of trying to show of technical chops, these guys go for a groovier sound. It really works better for them in the end. They're pretty great at that, and while some tracks are unimpressive, the album is littered with brilliant songs like Intake and The Columbian Faction. Edge Of The Earth is undoubtedly the highlight of the album, managing to be heavy and beautiful at the same time. Unlike most metalcore bands who shoehorn in clean vocals, Volumes employs them rarely on Edge Of The Earth for maximum impact. They're very well performed (a rarity these days) and will stick in your mind for weeks to come. The album is worth a listen for that track alone.

The album artwork itself is epic enough in its own right, but the music is even better. I did not know what to say really after a first listen of this album. Instantly, this became one of my favorite albums. Throughout the listen I had no idea what was going to happen next. That concept of unexpected surprise is one thing I love that artists can do. One of the biggest surprises on here were the clean vocals that come out of nowhere on "Edge of the Earth" and "The Columbian Faction". They are actually well placed and executed. I nearly pissed my pants out of surprise after hearing them. While some parts of some songs may sound a little similar, there is enough overall variety on the album to make it good. The ambient openings of a few of the songs add a nice touch and add a different distinct sound to each. My favorite part of the cd has to be the instrumental "Reversion" which leads directly into the piano opening of the next track "Serenity". All in all a great album with good meaningful lyrics, yet heavy enough to keep your head bobbing. Via is definitely worth a few listens over, at least until their next effort comes out :D

Woah this is 10 years old? Forgot how this was basically groovy djent, or djenty groove metal with core vocals. The two vocalists are clearly distinguishable, but I find their deliveries to be too similar - and thus grating on the long term. Not as head-banging as it was for lil dedex, but it still got dem chops.

Pretty good stuff. Better vocals and the mixing seems to have more punch where is counts. The vocalists layer so well together. This definitely my favorite album. Some tracks had me thinking, "well that sounds pretty." While there is some repetitiveness to the album, this band makes me feel like no other djent-y band does.

Not only a "catchy as fuck" LP but ultimately something that grips the emotional side of metal with open-minded lyrical passages and exceptional approach towards groovey stucture, Volumes hit the nail on the head with this first release. While I usually gripe about originality in most of my reviews, something about this album feels somewhat like a comfortable familiar instead of recycled lost ambition. Truly an album I'm glad to own in it's physical form.

The Concept of Dreaming was absolutely amazing in it's own right, and I was expecting something on par with that, but after hearing this, I am pleasantly surprised to say I'm digging this much more than the aforementioned.

Volumes doesn't make a step back in anyway, instead opting to stay firmly, stubbornly even, in the same spot at their EP, and a full length of the same old same old gets tiring very quickly. Still some of the better metalcore out there these days. And yeah, its groovy as fuck. Wormholes and Intake still rule face.

more near to a 3 than to a 4. two fillerintro's, two rehashed tracks and six forgettable songs, leaving us with only two new outstanders from this record which is much too less considering their previous work. our sad result: the EP was much better, not productionwise but in terms of musicianship and consistency. nevertheless this is no bad listen at all and still one of the flagship's of modern day's djent. but as we see they wasted tons of their potential...
