Gnarls Barkley kinda came out of nowhere, didn't they? I'm generally pretty much allergic to hype, especially indie hype, so I didn't exactly approach this duo with an open mind. And, sure enough, I heard 'Crazy' a dozen times a day in various media and, feeling thoroughly self-satisfied with another prejucide well-founded, I found myself accidentally loving the damn thing.
Soon, I was completely enamoured with Cee-Lo's impossibly high-pitched picture of soul and the "oh god, why didn't I think of that" indie rock-based instrumental tracks Danger Mouse was laying down as if such a mix of styles was commonplace. 'Crazy' may be one of the best singles of this century, 'Gone Daddy Gone' one-ups the Violent Femmes and 'The Boogie Monster' captures a child's fear of the irrational and imaginary to perfection. Some albums are just classics, and St. Elsewhere is already assured of that status.

This debut album is nothing short of amazing. Each track is danceable, and holds your intrest. There are only very few downsides to this album; like some slower songs, but they are still good. Cee-Lo can really sing the hell out of himself, and Danger Mouse is an amazing producer and DJ. These two make a great duo.

St. Elsewhere, Gnarls Barkley's first LP, is a swift kick in the butt. It's insanely catchy, captivating, and produced extremely well, which should come as no surprise knowing Danger Mouse's past and present musical endeavors. One personal flaw I find in this album is in its song lengths - the longest song clocks in at sub-3:30. This is a slight disappointment because some songs seem to end too prematurely; however, this can clearly be looked past because each song holds listener interest in an aural vicegrip - check out "Crazy," "Gone Daddy Gone," "Transformer," and "Smiley Faces."

St. Elsewhere is perhaps one of the more audacious, most electrifying debut albums somebody such as myself would ever bother confronting in the world of music. The team of CeeLo Green and producer Danger Mouse couldn't be any less hazardous to those who dare approach this recording. Gnarls Barkley' first full-length offering revels in precious minimalism as well as CeeLo's exceptional, unmistakable vocal deliveries that are able to make the foulest of mongrels go from impure to proud atoners in seconds. I'll have to agree with Jom on this, though: St. Elsewhere's biggest issue doesn't stem from a majority of the tracks by themselves, but rather their underwhelming (if not rapid-fire) lengths; "Feng Shui," "Transformer," and "Necromancer" are definitely charming numbers, but they'd be practically unstoppable tunes if more time was put into those tracks. Still and all, GB's first trip down magical soul avenue isn't an unremarkable one, no sir.

Great, straight-to-point pop recording, with some pretty awesome production and vocals. Personal favorites: "Crazy" (of course) and "Just a Thought".

An amazing collaboration if I've ever heard one. Cee-Lo's scaling clean voice complemented perfectly by Danger Mouse's amazing work on the musical side. 3.9/5

Definitely more concise than their latest effort, and a hell of a lot more listener friendly I found. The replay value on this is still pretty high for myself anyway, which is decent for a random record that found it's way into my collection. It's also pretty good for a strange amalgamation of sounds lilke GB puts out to hang around this long, so props to St. Elsewhere. This one had its own atmosphere to it, fantastic stuff.

Gnarls Barkley was one of the first hip-hop, if it can be called that, albums I ever really loved (mainly because it is one of the few I ever bother to listen to).

I don't think any one song has dominated my listening time as Crazy did back in the summer of 2006. It quickly became a mandatory addition to any playlist I had created at the time. I also think this is the first and only song to delay me in listening to the rest of the album because I couldn't stop myself from listening to it. Finally Crazy's spell was broken when I heard Gone Daddy Gone which prompted me to give the rest of the album a shot. From start to finish St. Elsewhere is a very mesmerizing release by Gnarls Barkley and I can't wait to hear what they have bring to the table next in future albums. For me the highlights from this record are Crazy, Just A Thought, and St. Elsewhere.

at first it was a cool song, crazy, i thought it was ok, then it was overplayed and the rest of the cd was not so great. plus its not really my kind of music so it was horrible that it made me like the song then hate it lol. oh well many songs are overplayed i guess
