What does a great if not excellent collaboration between two of hip-hop's most larger-than-life figures - one, a veteran entrepreneur, a Don Corleone of the rap world; the other an artsy egotist with a batshit imagination - sound like? I'll tell you: a genuine surprise, a pleasure, and an ecstatically-produced collection of A-grade mainstream jams. Get ready to hear "Monster" less and less at parties. Watch The Throne is a worthy successor. Another thing...Kanye finally offers an explanation for his odd Ye-isms (see: "put a pussy in the sarcophagus):r"No one knows what it means. But it's provocative."

I have just as mixed feelings about this album as the reviews. Sometimes it's brilliant, sometimes it's terrible, sometimes it's only carried by Jay-Z and Kanye's combined egos.rIt starts with 'No Church in the Wild', which is *fantastic*. Then 'Lift Off' which is not quite so. Then 'Niggas in Paris' comes in and it's deliciously pop, followed by 'Otis' which is a bit better. 'New Day' shows the duo laying out the lives they'd want their children to live, and many songs and a ridiculous amount of silence later, the album is over.rIt's such a strange event, listening to "Watch the Throne". It could have been so much better, but it seems like the two got carried away and felt that the fact that it was two legends rapping together would justify its existence. But the sparks of greatness that shine through on it are dimmed by the rest of it.

All-Star Game: the album. Curated by Jay-Z and Kanye, all features are big name material (Beyonce, Otis Redding, Frank Ocean), and the braggadocio is the one driving lyrical subject. While they clearly want to "experiment" with their sound - especially Kanye - it doesn't always work for the best. Sometimes it's due to bad choices - remix Flux Pavilion, really? The main reason, however, is that I feel Jay isn't always on par with Kanye's production. Because, make no mistake here, it's a Kanye West album. It's just that Jay is featuring on each track. It's a cool record, but one that could have benefited from some refinement.

Both Jay-Z and Kanye West competently do what they do best on their first collaborative
album, Watch the Throne, but it feels like they're separately doing their own thing
instead of actually collaborating in a way that brings out new and interesting things in
both of them and pushes their abilities, and themselves further. Lyrically, the two play off
of each other quite dynamically, and the beats and production supporting them is no less
well-articulated than usual for them both, but that's just it; while Watch the Throne
may be no less in quality than what's expected of them, it's also really no more than
standard fare. There's no slacking here from either one of the duo, but there's no
progression or distinctiveness to make this collaborative album any different from a plain
old collection of tracks by both of them merely featuring each other on verses.
