I'm a fair classic rock fan, but mostly Im the kind of guy that has metal blasting on his ipod all day. But when I heard this, I was really blown away at the musical brilliance behind this album. It would be very hard for me to explain myself, this is like a mix of Dream Theater composition and Pink Floyd style with some jazz horns. It's not just another album, it was a showstopper for me. This band has more talent than almost any other band Ive ever heard. Aja is a stand-out track for me, it has to be my favorite classic rock song of all time. Give this a try or atleast download a song

Steely Dan was always the jazzier cousin of the typical 70s rock bands. Still successful and quite respected, it wasn't until 1977's Aja that Steely Dan became one of the biggest names of the decade. For this album Steely Dan introduced more jazz elements, inviting saxophonist Wayne Shorter (formerly of Weather Report) and Steve Gadd (drummer for Chick Corea) to perform on the album. Steely Dan manages to fit catchy jazz rock songs and intense progressive-rock like epics such as the title track so well together. Peg and Josie show the slightly more commerical side of Steely Dan even though it still retained the jazz-like smoothness within every second. With so many classics such as "Peg", "Josie", "Deacon Blues" and the epic "Aja", this is one 70s album most certainly worth buying.

I came across this album at school a couple of weeks ago. My teacher was using the album to explain some audio equipment, and I couldn't help ignoring him and listening to this album instead. Definitely a great album.

One of the formative moments of my recent musical history was my mother giving me her copy of this record. I was a newly minted college radio DJ who thought I knew what was cool and assumed Steely Dan was insipid lounge music for dad rockers. I was wrong as shit. ("Deacon Blues", "Peg", "Josie")

Audio engineering and aural serenity at it's unrivaled best. Aja is generally more straightforward than any of Steely Dan's pre or post offerings but repeated listens reveal truly decadent cohesion of complex layers that combine to form an album that arguably exceeds the lofty reputation handed upon it. It's also probably your dads favorite vinyl.

This record is yet another example to throw onto the pile of albums that cement the 1970s as one of the greatest periods in the history of music. The talent on display here is truly stunning, in every single aspect of its composition, instrumentation, vocal work, and variety of songs to choose from. Of course you can sit down and enjoy the album from start to finish, but one of the greatest aspects of Steely Dan's Aja is the fact that you can play any song from it and find both you and any listeners around you thoroughly satisfied and impressed. A perfect album that needs no introduction, and should be on your list of what to visit when venturing through the history of both jazz rock and music as a whole.

Great songwriting and storyrtelling, but after many listens, the song really start to get bland and a little too long. Josie and Deacon Blues are both masterful tracks tho. rSo great album, but very poor replay value IMO.
