2.0 poor | Bedex | December 10th 19 | This one felt better because it was less one dimensional, but it was still weak with a lot of boring tracks. At least the squeals are very scarce and the vox are mostly ok. 1 is nice especially the intro, but still got me worried that this would be mindless speedy thrash like the previous album -which thankfully it wasn't. The end of 2 and the first 5 min of 3 gave me hope as pretty bouncy thrash tracks, but only 6 and the intro on 8 managed to carry the flame. The rest of the album just felt boring with excessively long songs overstretching relatively weak motifs. While I appreciate the attempt at variety, the two instrumental tracks on 4 and 7 just felt dull, and 5 has annoying vocals. Meh. 2.2

4.0 excellent | Resident Metalhead Piranha | June 2nd 17 | Another album in the vein of Darkness Descends would not do for it was too great to duplicate, so Dark Angel decides to dive into their more varied tendencies on their follow-up Leave Scars. Surely the album left some marks, but they weren't quite the scars that hurt so good. "The Death of Innocence" kicks right into high gear, and the drum fills varied and impressive from the get-go, and the guitars have a malicious tone not unlike their previous effort, but then something goes wrong; newcomer vocalist Ron Rinehart's vocals kick in, and right off the bat, he lacks the charm of Don Doty, and his vocals are too loud to overlook. This plagues the album as a whole, and while he's not terrible, actually sounding decent sometimes, this wouldn't be such a problem if his vocals were either not at the front of the mix or if they were just better. "The Death of Innocence" is a good opener despite that hiccup, but the riffs also don't stick out like their previous effort. "Never To Rise Again" is a step up, even in the vocal department, and the variety throughout is overall impressive, most notably the drumming and soloing. Although a considerable stepdown from their magnum opus, it's a worthy enough addition to your collection.

4.0 excellent | AnAutopsy | September 13th 16 | Solid riffage.. Gene Hoglan shows his progression toward becoming a legend and the production packs a punch. Even though I gave this a 4 there are still some issues. Cauterized should have been half of the length because it drags after 4 or 5 minutes and the Immigrant Song cover is a fun novelty but it really isn't that great. Overall this is a solid record.

3.0 good | westerndragon | December 9th 15 | Scratches the itch for death/thrash metal. Eccentric and intense, but without distinguishing characteristics due mostly to the long run-times of several of the songs. It's a more modern and slightly better version of Seven Churches honestly. Strangely, the production quality is even worse than Darkness Descends in my opinion. I thought subsequent albums were supposed to sound better?

3.5 great | FirstStrikeIsDeadly | November 24th 14 | This album is dark as hell. Be it the downtuned guitars, very grim subject matter (touching on topics like suicide and sexual abuse/assault), or raw production, something about this album just seems downright evil. It's not fantastic (Immigrant Song is a really bad cover and Worms is ominous, but feels like filler), but a few songs like The Death of Innocence, The Promise of Agony, and No One Answers are really good, and all the breakdowns are absolutely insane, like the one just a bit before the two minute mark in the title track. Not as good as the one just before or after, but has some great stuff in it.

3.5 great | BRAman22 | September 27th 14 | Leave Scars is a solid technical thrash album from Dark Angel. The main rip on this album, and really Dark Angel in general, is that the songs are just too long.
