and if you asked me, I'd say it's the strongest EP of 2011 thus far.

Look, I'll tell you a story, all right? I once feel deeply, you know, profoundly in love
with tropical fish. Had 60 goddamn fish tanks in my house. I skin dived to find just the
right ones. Anisotremus virginicus, Holdacanthus ciliaris, Chaetodon capistratus. You name
it. Then one day I say, "fuck fish". I renounce fish. I vow never to set foot in that
ocean again. That's how much "fuck fish". That was 17 years ago and I have never stuck so
much as a toe in that ocean. And I love the ocean. Why? Done with fish.
I'm generally not a fan of samples, but fuck me if Trophy Scars don't know how to use them
perfectly.

is it just me or do these guys make the most entertaining eps, like ever? Not only is this easily the best ep I've heard all year, it also ends up being more memorable than most full length I've heard all year. It's beautiful...

I like Trophy Scars, I really do. Everything they've done is consistently great but at the same time I just don't give a single fuck about them or this here EP. When I'm listening to it I'm all like this shit is good, but that's been twice and I doubt it will be again because once again I don't give enough of a fuck. It's just like Darkness, Oh Hell which I haven't listened to since its release. Same thing goes with Bad Luck. There was a time when I gave a fuck when I used to listen to Hospital Music and Alphabets like I had cancer and Trophy Scars were whatever the fuck cures cancer but I mean hey, at that same time I was listening to a shit load of Throwdown and Senses Fail so it's not like me giving a fuck actually meant shit. Ya know?

In the end though, all of that crazy orchestration and songwriting only serves to highlight
the simple elegance of Never Born, Never Dead. Regardless of what the story may be behind
the album, regardless of what instruments they use or how they put them together, or even
what they may have expressly meant to produce, Never Born, Never Dead succeeds because it
taps into some deeper meaning of what music can be: a sprawling, emotional, spiritual and
ambitious work that by not pretending to take itself seriously, becomes so much more honest
than 99% of music being put out today.

This is truly their best work. Period. Only reason I give it a 4.5 is that it just kills me that it's not a full length. Also, there's this annoying feedback in the bridge of Angels that I just feel shouldn't be there. Still, this is as good as it gets. They are pure geniuses.

"Never Dead" is probably one of the sweetest and most touching love songs I've ever heard. The whole album is just beautiful, and is a nice breath of fresh air after the darker themes of Bad Luck and Darkness, oh Hell. I hope these guys never stop changing!

Trophy Scars have been amazingly consistent since Bad Luck, releasing three of the most original, genuine and heart-wrenching albums of the past few years. It has gotten to the point that if you don't like Trophy Scars, I have to seriously question your sanity.

Excellent EP, combining post-hardcore sensibilities with blues guitarwork and gruff vocals. The sample work is phenomenal ("Angels"), the performances are first-class ("Messengers"), and the conglomeration of these styles is decidedly original.

At this point, if you haven't at least checked out a Trophy Scars record, you're doing something wrong. I'm not going to sit here and try to explain the appeal of the band, but in context, it's easy to explain the appeal of this EP. What I mean by that is, if you've heard the counterpart to this EP, 2010's Darkness, Oh Hell, it's obvious enough why you should listen to this record, which is a very evocative and effective sequel. Though it's not quite as good as its predecessor, it's got some great material on it, especially the wondrously engaging love song "Never Dead". The use of samples is very fitting and gives everything a timeless feel to it. All this being said, it works well standing alone, but within the context of its predecessor, it's just that much better, everything connecting very well throughout its runtime. It's probably their most bluesy album, and the use of strings has diminished a bit, but the horns are better this time around as well. In essence, this is just another great outing from one of the leading bands one experimental rock.

Whether I was sitting in my room completely stoned, laying in bed thinking about my ex-girlfriend when we broke up, or working out to it while trying to come out of my now, formerly chubby body, this album has stuck with me. It's calming songs have kept me sane through the beautiful hell 2011 was for me, and I'm thankful I've gotten the privilege to listen to this beautiful piece of music

It took me a few spins to avoid being bothered by the vocals. It was awful of me to listen to this EP first out of their whole discography. It may be true that his vocals may give polarized remarks, but this is definitely fine. This unfortunately short EP grew out on me. And for those who are bothered by his vocals, listen to their first post-hardcore-laced releases. It won't be much of a bummer there. Then sooner, you'll appreciate him well.
